Parting Shot (A Matter of Time Book 7)

He loves the club scene, hanging with his friends, and flirting with whomever catches his eye. But it all changes when Geoffrey is drugged and wakes up half naked in his own home with a new message from his stalker. Life has never been easy for Duncan Stiel. His childhood was the stuff of nightmares, and his day job as an undercover police officer forces him to hide his true self and occasionally lands him in the hospital.

So when he finally meets the perfect man, it comes as no surprise that everything falls apart around him. What Duncan doesn't expect is that the hardest hurdle to get over before he can make a life with Aaron Sutter is the one inside himself. Everyone thinks Aaron has it all - looks, money, fame, and success beyond measure. Everyone, that is, except Aaron.

At the end of the day, the cameras stop flashing, friends go back to their own lives, company business is handled, and Aaron is always alone. The moment he meets Duncan Stiel, Aaron knows he'll do anything to hold onto the larger-than-life detective. But when he realizes money won't buy him the ultimate happiness, Aaron needs to find the strength to give Duncan something much more important - his heart.

First let me say This is book 7 of the Matter of Time series Also if u want some back history on Duncan then get Acrobat which is also on here.. Now we all remember Aaron Sutter, Jory's ex In this, Aaron alphaness was subtle Money really can buy anything! Duncan was like another version of Sam, after he realised he was in love with Jory. Two alphas coming together but willing to submit to each other!

Would you consider the audio edition of Parting Shot to be better than the print version? I'd have to say yes in this case. The narrator did a great job bringing Duncan Stiel to life and a lot of the time it really felt like you were actually sitting there, listening to this guy telling his story. What was one of the most memorable moments of Parting Shot? When Duncan was hurt and Aaron broke their cover because of it. Also, the moment Duncan unintentionally declared his love for Aaron while they were stuck in the security tower. Which character — as performed by Tristan James — was your favorite?

Who was the most memorable character of Parting Shot and why? He's just such an interesting guy. Powerful and dominant on the surface, but submissive behind closed doors. He's a lot more interesting than Jory was. I kind of wish this narrator could have done the a Warder series Just when you were getting tired of the Jory plot line, along comes this little gem.

I'm always a fan of Mary Calmes and this book doesn't disappoint. I'm sure I've got nearly all the books in the series. If you're looking for sex, this is it. But if you're looking for story, do not bother. I am going to return this one Tristan you were as always, in my opinion, good. The only saving grace to this book. Mary, the sex scenes were good, but what happened to the story!? Listener, I have been thru this series, and this was a definite disappointment. Aaron and Duncan's story was great but only references to Sam and Jory Tristan did a great job narrating BUT his pronunciation of Jory changed to Yory for part of book with even Aaron's character making that mistake My ocd caused me to not finish book first time.

But second time I realized he corrected himself in last part of book. Welcome to the world of Aaron and Duncan. Aaron billionaire, Duncan local cop - no way you say. Oh yes these guys are not joking they have what it takes and are willing to give it all. I loved that this started off being truthful.

No games, their attraction is brutally honest. They quickly realize issues they have had in their past relationships like Duncan not living openly and Aaron not feeling he could - just can't apply this time. They get on the same page quickly so we get to enjoy the story and their adventure and steamy love life.

Loving Tristan as narrator. Mary Calmes feel free to continue their story I'm sure we will follow. What other book might you compare Parting Shot to and why? How does this one compare? I have listen to a lot of his performances and this one is one of his top ones! Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? This book just clicked for me from start to finish and was totally great! Plot -was good and kept your interest, narrator was good as well- all the pieces fit together perfectly for a really great listen!

Finished it in one go and am now doing my second listen at a more leisurely pace! What did you love best about Parting Shot? Duncan and Aaron's story, all of it! When Aaron shows up at Duncan's apartment after the 4 month misunderstanding. Tristan James is a good narrator, but he read a little slow and sometimes it was hard to decipher which character he was doing.

Sometimes it was hard to tell if it was Aaron or Duncan. I have read this book so I knew, but change in inflection would have helped some. Overall great read and audio. The story is great and the narration is wonderful. First and foremost, if you are worried about reading this book and haven't read the others in the series, don't be! This book can definitely be read as a stand-alone that is what I did! Moving on, this book grabbed from the first page and would not let go; I could not put it down. This was my first book by Ms. Calmes, and boy, did she blow me away. Her writing was superb and engaging and utterly entertaining and gritty.

Sam's One-Shot - Critical Role RPG

I felt like this book was really written by a 6'4", lb cop. And her di First and foremost, if you are worried about reading this book and haven't read the others in the series, don't be! And her dialogue was one of the best I had seen in a while. I definitely had no complaints about the writing regarding this book. Since I had not read the previous books in the series, I am not sure exactly how Aaron was portrayed, but I absolutely adored him in this book. He could definitely be a tough guy and go full alpha-male, hulk mode on somebody, but he was also vulnerable.

It was so endearing to see how shaken he got when he thought Duncan wasn't as interested in him as he was in Duncan. I also loved seeing his possessiveness of Duncan and his complete unwillingness to ever hurt Duncan, be it under the bedroom or when they were both working undercover. I also loved Duncan. How could I not since he is the consummate alpha male? He could get the crap beat out of him and still bounce back up and go for another round.

He could get a little obtuse sometimes in his relationship with Aaron and unintentionally hurt him, but he always figured it out and made it better. He was exactly what Aaron needed: Duncan was a little reluctant of coming out of the closet but quickly realized that he would rather be with the love of his life than worry about anybody finding out. These two were just amazing as a couple and complemented each other so well! As for the plot, there is murder and some mystery, but it was never really a whodunnit since we know pretty much from the beginning who committed the crime.

But do not let this put you off! This book was still action-packed and fast-paced. There was never a dull moment. I definitely recommend picking up this book if you want to be sucked in and not let go until the very end. I just cannot praise it enough. View all 14 comments. Good-bye Sam and Jory. Hello Aaron and Duncan We've met both of these characters in previous books in this series an 4. We've met both of these characters in previous books in this series and I have to admit when I first read this book I wasn't sure how well this was going to work out for me.

While Duncan was a little bit intriguing and I was ok with finding out more about him, I was in all honesty not a fan of Aaron Sutter. This was not a character that I wanted to be bothered with but as always Ms Calmes knew better and she drew me into a story about that got me involved and showed me a different side of Mr Sutter and gave him the perfect match in Duncan Stiel.

Someone who could go toe to toe with him and not be intimidated by his wealth and for Duncan Aaron was bold enough to step into his world and face danger with him and have his back So when I decided to revisit 'A Matter of Time' on audio and saw that Tristan James was the narrator well you can be sure that I was really looking forward to getting to this book and once again this is a perfect example of what a difference a good narrator can make because as much as I enjoyed reading the book While I enjoyed my adventures with Sam and Jory I have to say admit 'Parting Shot was my favorite audio book from this series View all 3 comments.

I think Im the only one who is dissapointed with this book, I couldn't even find Mary Calmes in this book, it was like it had been written by a nameless generic gay romance author, if this had had been my first book of her, I dont think I would have dare to read her other books, probably I would have given her a three star, but really there is nothing outstanding in this book, and it was boring as hell.

I kept asking myself if it was going to be over soon, it doesnt have the magic that Jory and Sam story has, with Sam and Jory you can really feel the love, and they are in a relationship, Aaron and Duncan feel like they are continuously in a one-night stand. I really dont know why they saw in each other, I didnt feel any love coming from them, it also bothered me that Aaron denied he had been in love with Jory, I mean I get they were not theirs true love, but Aaron and Jory stayed together for a year and a half, plus, Aaron kept chasing him when the relationship was over, and then you tell me, oh no, it was only bc he couldn't have him, he HAD him, for a YEAR AND HALF.

  • See a Problem?.

  • Silence Your Peninnah.

It lack they true love characteristic and relationship description, that Jory and Sam and even Jin and Logan had, heck even Eli and Craig's short story had it, this story lack the couple and family warm that Mary Calmes had always given us, and in exchange we were left with cheap porno, not even the previous matter of time, frog and change of heart had this much sex. And I do love sex in my stories but I also need a plot to let me feel the love, really such a dissapointment, I really regret having bought this, and you really dont have to have tons of sex on the book to make it wonderful Strawberries for dessert by Marie Sexton doesnt even have one sex scene, and it's one of my favorites, they only mention, we had sex last night, or we are going to have sex today.

Putting a lot of sex scenes together makes me believe the author didnt really know what way to go, and decided to fill it with cheap porno. It is really a pitty since I was really excited to read the Aaron and Duncan story. I usually take one day to finish a gay romance book, specially when Im in vacations like right now, and with this one I took three, just to show everyone how boring I found it, that I had to force me to read it.

Parting Shot ends up being a direct hit for me. I was all prepared to read a Mary Clames book that I didn't like, truly I was. Truly it didn't happen.

Matter of Time: Vol. 1

Here's what's offensively bad about this one. Acrobat Unabridged Mary Calmes. I do so love Tristan James's voice; it's like rich chocolate: His childhood was the stuff of nightmares, and his day job as an undercover police officer forces him to hide his true self and occasionally lands him in the hospital. Everyone, that is, except Aaron.

Nope by the end of this book I was gushing and sighing as if it was Sam and Jory. But it wasn't this is the 7th book in their series but other than a very brief appearance by Sam in one scene and the occasional mention of Jory, they didn't really factor in to this story. This story was Aaron Stutter, w Parting Shot ends up being a direct hit for me. This story was Aaron Stutter, who I freely admit is not a favorite of mine, not even a little bit. Well at least he wasn't until this book and Duncan Steil who I remember from book 6, But For You, just barely and not in any great detail.

So how could I possibly end up not just liking this book, but loving these two characters. Well I have only one answer for that "It's Mary Calmes". The lady knows what she's doing and she's obviously doing it well. Up until now, for me Aaron was just a self indulged rich boy and Duncan, well he was a new ball game, because there was so little of him in the other books he may as well have been a new character.

I think part of why this ended up being such an enjoyable read for me was the fact that I got to see beyond the surface with Aaron, he was finally given a depth of character and he had flaws, beyond what seemed like the obvious rich boy entitlement. Neither one of these men came off as being perfect, but they were passionate about each other and with each other.

They also seemed to be aware of the fact that their relationship would never work if they didn't figure out compromise and partnership. I can't help but wonder if this book was titled Parting Shot because it's the end of the road for this series, if it is than Ms Calmes has done it up right giving us an incredible farewell and if it's not I will still much to my surprise be very happy to read more about Aaron and Duncan.

Jun 26, Wendy rated it really liked it Shelves: I did read some of the matter of time books, but not all of them. So I knew Aaron but I didn't know Duncan. I expected something simmilar like Jory Aaron and Duncan were both hot aplha males, while Jory was more of a twinky. Don't get me wrong I loved Jory, like so many do, but I love reading about two alpa males who are versatile getting it on!!

This book was explosive HOT. I did not expect that either. Sure Sam and Jory where h Wow Sure Sam and Jory where hot together It's not a deeply emotional acionfilled book, although there is some action. And yes for the ones out there who hate it I liked both characters. I didn't think I would like Aaron, but he was awesome in this book. You can read this one as a stand alone.

Jul 19, pbj rated it liked it Shelves: It's unfair that I hold some authors to a higher standard than others, I know that, but I can't help it. Mary Calmes has written some books that I just loved, and when each new book is released, I want to love it as well. Parting Shot is ok, but I didn't love it. The guys are hot and strong and moody and rich, the sex is hot and demanding and wild and full of non-existent gag reflexes, the plot is confusing and disjointed and unbelievable and predictable I don't need the end of the last book to get wrapped up in the first five pages of this book, I already dealt with the fact that that book had plot problems, why spill the nonsense over into this one?

Why do horribly injured people want to have sex? Maybe I'm just picky, but if I had just had the snot beaten out of me and gotten 27 stitches from being stabbed and had a split lip, I don't think I'd want to be grinding lips and getting busy. You get tortured for 5 days, but no one finds your 27 stitches? I won't pick on the "big misunderstanding" that keeps them separated for months - that's Mary Calmes' standard MO, but once they do get back together and fall into the 'undercover together' plot, why are they photographed everywhere they go?

Do we really think that the sunglasses will stop anyone from discovering Duncan's identity? I feel like sometimes Mary Calmes writes her characters into situations that she then has to write a lot of exposition to get out of, and sometimes I'm just frustrated by all the after the fact explanations - that there's audio surveillance everywhere, except this one place where we just had that conversation that we shouldn't have had if we really didn't want anybody to know what we're doing - which we don't, but it's ok, because nobody heard that Who thinks the next book is about Terrance Moss - raise your hands edited to add that I didn't remember Aaron being in the closet so I went back to MoT, and considering that Jory talks about Aaron going down on him in a restaurant while they were together, it was certainly news to me in "But for You" that Aaron was in the closet Aug 18, Silkeeeeeereads rated it really liked it Shelves: Really nice light suspense story about a detective and a Billionaire falling in love and going under cover with each other to catch the bad guys.

Yes, it's a simple little one line description but that is the beauty of the story. There is just enough story line to keep you entertained and just a little over the top on the great sex side to keep you hot and bothered. I always love sex. I need a cigarette. Looks like I may have read this out of order on my original read too. I for sure read it out of order on my audio re-read. Man, I hate how my old reviews look. I needed to read about Duncan since I was going to soon be reading about Conrad Darius and well, I just felt like skipping the whole Hawaii scene with Jory.

So much love but he can still grate on my nerves at times. So, here I am. Doing my own thing and listening out of order. This book did wonderful things for him.

Mary's "flip the script" magic totally worked here. Totally the audio and not the story didn't work here. Aaron's voice is just wrong. He just wouldn't sound like a whiner. He wouldn't sound weak and naive and child like. It wasn't the words though, just how they were read to me. It wasn't in your face for the whole listen but when it came out it totally did. It totally took me out of the story at times.

Parting Shot

The audio doesn't do him any favors and I think I knew this my first listen but I didn't judge. Now I am judging. I want these two together and loved their story, just not so much when it was read to me. Still, not too shabby. Vorrei poter scegliere 6 stelline. I personaggi Vorrei poter scegliere 6 stelline.

I personaggi principali stavolta sono Aaron Sutter e il detective Duncan Stiel, che si sono incontrati, grazie a Jory, nello scorso libro. Mi hanno fatta sciogliere, davvero. Jul 03, Sara rated it it was amazing Shelves: I fell in love with Aaron Sutter and when I realized I was in love with him, this kinda happened. I strongly disliked Aaron through the Matter of Time series. The man was selfish, arrogant and never respected the ring on Jory's finger nor the commitment he made to Sam. Aaron was creepy with boyfriends as he kept them and the whole wanting them to BE Jory deal.

But that Aa "So you are saying he's actually a good guy. But that Aaron, started to change at toward the end and that change had everything to do with one sexy closeted detective named Duncan Stiel. Now Duncan, who tells us this story, I loved him the minute Sam told Jory he was gay. I wanted Jory to set him up with someone, I just never thought it would be Aaron but thank goodness it was.

From their first night together I knew this would be emotional. Not only do you have two men who are in the closet but you have two men with so many emotional walls up, it would have to be someone special to pull them down.

iTunes is the world's easiest way to organize and add to your digital media collection.

But there was not pulling down in this, the walls came down fast and I loved it as the crash happened. It was messy, it was sexy and it was heartbreaking at times. This was so good. I loved how the men blended their lives and how they talked, they actually talked about things.

Parting Shot: A Matter of Time, Book 7 (Unabridged)

It wasn't a grunt of you do this and I do this. It was hey, so we are doing this relationship deal and why don't we try taking care of each other and trading off on who gets to be the strong one and see where it takes us. I mean, for me it was and all of that was what both Duncan and Aaron needed - to know someone was out there who wanted and loved them and wouldn't leave. It sounds so simple really but these two men, ugh. They just killed me. This book left me with a bit of a book hangover. I read everything related to this series in a matter of days and once I finished this and went to bed, the next day was void of reading anything.

I looked back on what I read with a smile and a sigh and was sated. I boarded the Mary Calmes express train of crack and loved every word of it. I am not done, I have more to read, but I get it. I get the addiction and this story was so good. Possibly because Jory wasn't present.

I enjoyed this one a lot. Yeah, there was insta-love, which normally I don't care for, unless with shifters. But hey, it was a fun read. Duncan and Aaron just meshed together really well. I'll admit, I didn't care for Aaron that much in previous books. Mainly because he fell into the Jory orbit of hopeless unrequited love to an asshole. Yah Yah, I know Jory farts rainbows I just couldn't respect Aaron in the previous books because of it. I loved him in this book. He jumped in head first into a relationship Duncan, I liked last book I did think it kinda stunk that by being with Aaron, he automatically has to give up undercover work.

I thought that might have needed a little more conversation before hand, other than Aaron informing him of the facts. The book was fun. Feb 10, Karen Wellsbury added it Shelves: Reading this was meant to be a bit of a joke, and we had a game all mapped out, scoring sweets if the things that irritated us occurred. On one hand it was successful, there is repetition, clutching channels, insta love and claiming a plenty. I ate at least 3 bags of sweets in 4 days while reading this. On the other hand it sucks you into the story and before you know it you want Duncan and Aaron to be the worlds most alpha male couple ever.

The way that they interact on an emotional level is real Reading this was meant to be a bit of a joke, and we had a game all mapped out, scoring sweets if the things that irritated us occurred. The way that they interact on an emotional level is really, really sweet. Then there is the most preposterous plot I have ever read. And on the other hand Duncan and Aaron need each other so much, its adorable. I can't rate this as I genuinely went from 1 star to 6 stars, in the space of about 30 mins everytime I read it This can be read as a stand-alone. Jul 17, Lauraadriana rated it really liked it Shelves: This is the seventh book in the Matter of Time.

I must admit I lost some steam with the 5th and 6th installments in the series. Her stories place her two men at the center of a tornado of circumstances and characters, and how they gravitate to each other is primary to pretty much anything else. So for me her stand alone books always work better, the momentum is intense, but contained and structured and even if the stuff that happens gets a bit crazy at times, when the ride ends I am satisfied because I get the big happy ending.

That being said I could NOT wait for this one. I really wanted a story for Duncan who we met in Acrobat. The love interest she came up with for my guy was a combo I could not resist! I have a soft spot for the characters whose hang ups and fears make them a little self-destructive, Duncan seemed so lonely and so full of yearning to find love. I wanted him to get his man and his happily ever after badly. This book was chuck full of the alpha borderline cray cray crack Mary delivers.

Two things surprised me though. From the moment that they met it was like everything fell into place for Duncan, and finally he felt like the found someone to belong to. Duncan has always had a lot of walls around him, and a lot of that had to do with his painful childhood. He had to be hard and closed off to survive and keep his sanity. Once he was out in the world and in police force his career just became the most important thing, but lately he was feeling like he was cheating himself of something, happiness seemed like something that was not as improbable as he thought it had been, when he met Aaron everything just started making sense.

Things get off to a great start with them and then after a bit of a dicey situation while Duncan is undercover some external factors keep Duncan and Aaron apart for a time.

Get A Copy

I completely enjoyed the way things happened for them, it was just on the edge of total FUBARness but Mary kept things in check and the ride was pretty damn smooth! What more can I say? Another crackified delicious shot of goodness from Ms.

As usual, the bad guy plot is just there to drive the relationship storyline which is the heart of the book and, of course, the sex is smoking hot. I loved the relationship between these two men, insta-love and all. With a very brief appearance from Sam and only mention of Jory, this is really Aaron and Duncan's story and a very enjoyable one at that.
