In its inaugural year, the Aerial Medical Service which changed its name to the Flying Doctor Service in and the Royal Flying Doctor Service in flew 50 flights to 26 destinations and treated patients. The Flying Doctor Service had a doctor, a pilot and John Flynn, the man with the vision, but we lacked the communication technology to deliver services efficiently.

Alfred Traeger helped to hurdle this barrier with the invention of a pedal-operated generator to power a radio receiver. By people living in isolation were able to call on the Flying Doctor to assist them in an emergency. Transistorised receivers later replaced pedal radios, making it possible for doctors to give radio consultations. It also meant neighbours, families and friends, scattered over thousands of kilometres, could exchange news and gossip after normal transmission hours.

This time became known as the 'galah' session, aptly named after the noisy, chattering bird. This radio service provided children living in remote areas the opportunity to interact with other children, ask questions of their teacher and supplement their correspondence lessons. The years to follow saw Australia struggle through the Great Depression and Mrs Flynn became a great support to her visionary and hard-working husband. Volmari Iso-Hollo , the winner of m steeplechase at the and Summer Olympics , was one of the best-known Finnish runners in the s and also nicknamed the Flying Finn.

The nickname was next used to describe the efforts of Finnish rally drivers in the s. The first driver to carry the nickname in Formula One was Leo Kinnunen.

Kinnunen had the title written on his helmet in , when he won the World Sportscar Championship for Porsche. In the s the moniker was given to Keke Rosberg , who became the first well-known Finn in the sport, winning the world championship. Following the success of later Finnish drivers, Rosberg has been described as the "original Flying Finn". On two wheels, the most famous Flying Finn was Jarno Saarinen , also known as The Baron , who won the cc road racing World Championship as privateer in , and finished a close second to Giacomo Agostini in the cc class.

Saarinen died the following year, while leading both the cc and cc championships and after competing for only three years. He remains in motorcycle sport history books for developing a new riding style, which is still predominantly in use today; body hanging off the bike with knee near the ground.

Mauno Hermunen, who has finished third in and fourth in in the world supermoto series, has also been nicknamed the Flying Finn. And what about next year, where you'll be in seventh grade, do you think there will be any big changes? I like to go out for runs when Anna is her practice, maybe a mile or so. But these fast times by younger athletes is something Westchester has seen before, most recently only a few years back. As a 7th grader, another local athlete begin cruising to fast times that could hang with some of the top talents in the state. Warp to , and Mary Cain , the 7th grader who ran 5: However, to this day, Cain still gives credit to the upperclassmen she raced against in her early years as inspiration for her to keep on running. With then-veteran runners like Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall always taking the time to talk to Mary, Cain credits these interactions as key motivators in her career.

Most notable would be the invitations to run cooldowns after big races with some of her elder competitors, when Cain herself was only in middle school. With this in mind, Cain waited patiently in the stands as Sarah Flynn ran her final indoor race of the season, so that Mary could return the favor that was given to her.
