Just like the story of Jesus, but I didn't mind, since a lot of Arthurian stories are Christian-based. I also knew that actual existing places in England would feature in the story and that the book w After a conversation with the writer, I was intrigued.

I also knew that actual existing places in England would feature in the story and that the book was really aimed at young adults, although the latter was neither confirmed nor denied by the author. Though the book was enjoyable enough and has a good flow which makes it easy to read longer passages although not a real page turner as the author suggested , there were some things wich make me rate this book with a mere 2 stars.

First of all, the language used both by narrator and characters is really old style. Though this is not such a problem for Arthur and his men since they have been sleeping for thousands of years , this did not suit the two teenagers featured in the story. Secondly, it seems like an attempt is being made at creating a Dan Brown sort of mysterie, however the reasonings are often too simple or rash, but always turn out to lead to the correct answer.

Also, the Christian elements are a bit too rediculous. There are apparently 7 evils in the modern day world which Arthur and his men are destined to destroy. Seven being a very Christian number. These evils are drugs, racism, unemployment, violence, pornography and nuclear war. As a non-Christian myself, I cannot see pornography as an evil. Then Arthur and his men go about getting rid of the drug problem in the world. This world merely consist out of the Dorset coast. And the some 3 tedious chapters are dedicated to how Arthur and his men intercept droppings and eventually roll up one drug gang with the help of the police all under the guise of pretending to be an army training in the neighbourhood.

This was all a bit too modern and had nothing to do with the story of Arthur as I expected it to be. There are some tedious situations in each chapter. Such as the explanation of how an auction works. Since I have the second book also, I will continue reading this trilogy. I expect much of the same and won't particular enjoy reading it, but I am curious as to some of the opinions that the author has towards the Arthurian legend and how he will explain certain problems or occurrences. A well-written book I just could not put the book down.

Ending up not riding horses but driving around in Land Rovers. The Dorset and surrounding countryside must of had looked so different. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series, Guinevere and the Siege Perilous. Faye rated it liked it Apr 26, Joni rated it did not like it Mar 01, John Maynard rated it really liked it Dec 28, James rated it liked it Jan 30, Ben rated it it was amazing Sep 17, Jaffrey Maharan rated it really liked it Aug 03, Caitlin rated it did not like it Jan 04, Villains can make or break a movie, and the same rule applies to books.

In Paula Volsky 's "Relian Kru's Luck" , one finds not just one, but two delightfully vicious, intelligent and eloquent villains. The half mechanical snakes is another nice touch. Can't think of the last time I read about as appealing a hero as Miles Vorkosigan. Kowtows to Lois McMaster Bujold , who has written about eight books in this series and is still going on strong.

I read "Komarr" first and became instantly smitten with Miles. The tone of the first story in "Borders of Infinity" is quite sober, but the rest two: Somehow child prodigies always make thrilling reading for me, the reason I ever suffered through Jeffrey Archer, but of course the book is so much more. It took me a while to get into Steven Brust 's Jhereg world, with all those exotic animal names in the Cycle, but once he introduced the protagonist's lovely wife, a fellow assassin, I was sucked into the story quickly.

After "Jhereg" and "Yendi" , I am hesitant to try the later, darker titles. Neal Stephenson is not my usual fare, but his "Diamond Age" has a girl whose primer book told her fantastic stories check out dino's! Even discounting Princess Nell and her adventures, there were a host impressive ideas in the book to engage the reader, despite the flimsy plot.

For some reason the cover of "The Golden Campass" led me to believe that it was a rather warm, cuddly book, and was I wrong. For starters, a lot of children died in the book in a horrible way. What the book was was mysterious, bold, complex and thrilling. Philip Pullman 's rich imagination filled this alternate universe with daemons, armor-clad polar bears, gyptians and witches.

Robert Jordan 's "Wheel of Time" series came high recommended, but its eight times six hundred plus page count is definitely not for the faint of heart. I have just finished the first one: Eye of the World, and haven't decided whether to go on. Roger Zelazny 's Amber Chronicles is on anybody's list of classics, and the place is well-earned.

I have only followed Corwin through the first two books: Zelazny is a master with one-liners.

Corwin's idea of dying in bed is being stepped on by an elephant when making love. I picture Amber as Renaissance Italy, a gaudy, gory and glorious place. I picked up Guy Gavriel Kay 's "Tigana" from the library because I liked its cover, and this time the 'judging by the cover' practise really paid off. It is like a generous serving of tiramisu: It took me nearly one month to get beyond the first thirty pages of "Dune" , but once Paul's father died, things started to move briskly. There were certain chapters during which I just couldn't stop wowing at all those fantastic ideas Frank Herbert came up with.

But I still stayed up all night s reading it. Martin has a new fan. What the spunky heroine did do, was escaping from an enemy spaceship, ruining any number of borrowed dresses, changing the color of feathers on the birds around the magic school, saving lots of people, twice, and falling in love of course.

After reading Emma Bull 's "War for the Oaks" , a modern-day fairy tale, my first impluse was to book a plane ticket to Minneapolis. Couldn't resist the plouka, who calls our heroine "my pestilential primrose". With some authors, you always know that you are in good hands. Such is the case with Lois Bujold McMaster. Her latest is a fantasy novel, "The Curse of Chalion" , in which she constructed a five-god religion that actually makes sense!
