July has been a busy month; Sally Lightfoot's Journey, a children's picture book for toddler thru elementary ages, has been reissued, hopefully in a better Kindle format thanks to Amazon's Kindle Comic Creator software which is still fairly new. However, the publishing of The Shadow-Dogs Journeys was rather unexpected; it was a project I pulled out of an archived folder, said, "Okay, this isn't too bad, and the pics are fun", and issued in large-print, digital, and 6X9 tra.

I'm hoping that a larger hardcover version of Sally Lightfoot will be available soon, where the unbelievable illustrations can really shine. Every single page is an absolute explosion of colors and forms, sure to dazzle children and parents alike, and set alight the budding imagination. The story follows the oceanic journey of Sally Lightfoot - a species of tropical crab - as she is picked up by the tide, carried away from her tidal pool home, and is swept to the coral reefs, and then to the depths of the ocean and back home again.

On her travels Sally encounters a wide variety of fascinating sights and wonderful creatures. The story is told in verse, so there are is no dialogue, and the characters are not given human qualities, and this allows the journey to flow much more naturally, and the language to retain an element of beauty and mild but appropriate complexity. The world is full of oversimplified children's books that don't particularly enrich the intellect. Along these lines of educational enrichment, the author has included a glossary in the back of the book which describes in brief detail some of the more interesting species that make an appearance in its pages.

This provides an opportunity for parents and children to flip back and play "I spy" - locating the species they've just learned about as they appear in the story. Sally Lightfoot herself is fun to locate on every page as well. I would recommend "Sally Lightfoot" to anyone with small, curious children. It's a wonderful way to get your little reader interested in art, color, poetry, words, animals, the environment and the incredible variety and beauty of our planet earth. I see that the other reviewer has only given Sally Lightfoot four stars.

Five stars all the way!!! Read it again Gramma! That's what I heard all day after reading this book to my 3 year old granddaughter. There is no better recommendation for a children's book than that. The illustrations - as always in a C. Walkingheart book - are incredible and the story is wonderful with it's rhymes and musical rhythm. I was also happy to see the explanations at the back of the book as to what some of the creatures were that were talked about in the book because as we all know - 3 year olds are the most curious creatures on the planet and having an explanation close at hand is a God send.

Walkingheart for another great book. Especially something that I can enjoy with my grandchildren. One person found this helpful. This is honestly one of the better picture books I've read in a while. I wish it was traditionally published, and not just an e-book. The illustrations were great. Very detailed and fully of vibrant colors. I loved them all! The colorful reef images were so bright and realistic looking.

The best part of this book is actually the story. It was told in a rhyming format that was not forced or silly. Each of the ryhymes fit perfectly together to tell a great adventure story. It seems that too often I read picture books that have fantastic illustrations, but the story itself is lacking.
