Duel at Grimwood Creek (Nysta Book 2)

Violent without giving up Peace, love, charity, and boredom. Nothing you would miss anyways. I don't do reviews. It's not that I don't have anything to say, but why write when I can read?

Thankfully Thorn doesn't think like that. Look, just buy the books. When I realized not everyone had, I knew I would have to intervene. If you can't buy the book, then murder someone and roll their corpse for one. Or, y'know, borrow them from a friend.

But read the story, pass the word to your friends. Teach an idiot to read, just so they too can enjoy what i have. Get your rear into gear. I will seriously start shanking strangers if I have to wait for five as I did for four. Genius isn't allowed to rest. Yeah, based on that alone I would give a 5 star review.

Today's fantasy books are generally long, boring, politically oriented - and while that might be good for some - for me those kinds of books are just terrible. If you're like me and just want a crazy and entertaining story where the characters aren't reasonable and aren't careful - then this book is for you. This is a brutal and fast-paced book with a dark and low fantasy setting.

At first it seems like it's going to be full of cheesy tropes but the author almost immediately subverts them. The characters are extremely well developed and complex. Don't expect any long boring plots involving court intrigue and such - the story is simplistic in a very good way. The fight scenes are many and amazingly well written. Since this is the first in a series - many questions are raised and few are answered - in other words this book can't really be read as a stand-alone.

The only complaint I could come up with is that there were only two main characters - it felt like there was room for at least one more to add some diversity. However the author addresses this wonderfully in the following books in the series so it really isn't a problem. Summarized - in my opinion there aren't enough books out there like this one. At the very least if you want something unique then buy this book. Not only is the main hero a foul-mouthed and impossibly efficient killer, but the world which she inhabits is full of no-nonsense characters who drop f-bombs on a regular basis.

If you can mind the fact that this four-letter word pops up as regularly as moles from their holes, then you can enjoy a sharply-written tale of vengeance, tense drama, and unflinchingly bloody action. It first reads like a straight-up revenge story ala "Kill Bill," but the surprising ending is something hardcore fans of fantasy can sink their teeth into. Nysta, is a nasty temperamental foul mouthed female Elf with sharp swords and sharper knives and the sharpest of wits. She seeks vengeance, retribution and a bath in the blood of those that killed her husband.

This a one hell of a foul mouthed ride up one side of a dead Gods grave and down the other. Oh, the nasty but scared Warlock is a bit of a whiny bastard, but has his uses. Good concept, for how often do you find such a violent and bad assed elf in a fantasy story.

For this reason, I've repackaged the books not in their individual series order, but in the order they are meant to be read. The series has been retitled The Shadow Realm. Why didn't I do this the first time? Why did I name each series after their characters? As a hack, I don't benefit from Advances or enjoy the support of a Publisher. She's a strong enough fighter that I wasn't really worried about her in these smaller fights. The chapter-ending puns made their return, but they didn't seem as jarring as they were in the first book I think in part because they seemed to be makin I'll admit, I was hoping that Nysta would face the Bloody Nine all at once in an epic fight scene, but it was clear early on that that wasn't going to happen. The chapter-ending puns made their return, but they didn't seem as jarring as they were in the first book I think in part because they seemed to be making references to things I didn't get.

Chukshene got his chance to shine, too, which I liked, and I enjoyed the flashback references to Talek.

I really liked him, right from the start! The writing style is still a bit rough for me, but it's the story that keeps me reading. There was more depth in this book than the first, which I appreciated. Can't wait to read the next one! Jan 26, Dick Martin added it. I have read all three of his books in this series and they just keep getting better and more intense in Nysta's journey to what I think of as finding her true self and purpose.

Nysta is rapidly becoming my favorite fantasy character of all time, really great to have a strong female lead who doesn't need a male costar well, only to kill!
