First Evil (Fear Street Cheerleaders)

They drive out to the cemetery and investigate the gravestones. Some of them are so old the names are weathered away, but they find her eventually. The grave is open and empty, and they freak out. Dustin appears behind them, which is less evil and more asshole ex-boyfriend. She wakes up in an old timey period where two women are talking. They both desperately want what the other has: Amanda is jettisoned to another time, another memory. Men are shouting, people are fleeing, and a woman is in the chaos of it all: Her last moments are so filled with hate and regret that Amanda feels it burning out of her.

The birth of Evil. Amanda wakes up in the grave and her friends help her out. She went back to that time and saw those things. Amanda does not tell them. She creeps towards the door, and a voice whispers to her to come in. She sees in the center of her room a woman, half corpse, half skeleton, flesh dangling from her bones. That was just the cliffhanger!

There is mud in her room leading from the windowsill to her dresser. On it is a note signed Sarah Fear. Which, would Sarah ever think of herself as a Fear? She never met the family. She never took the name. Judd is at her door. Judd says he wanted to make sure she was alright, since their friend died maybe six hours ago, probably less.

Judd asks if they should follow, and Amanda says yes. But Janine and Brandon pass the mall and keep driving all the way back to Fear Street. They walk into the cemetery together. Judd questions if they should really be following them, but Amanda runs as soon as the car unlocks and races up the hill to find her friend. She screams at Janine that Judd is evil and going to kill them, forgetting that Judd is right behind her.

Brandon tries to kill both girls, but Judd jumps on him. The two boys rassle as the girls try to make their escape, only to see Judd go down like a sack of bricks and not get back up again. Brandon stalks after them. Using her cheerleader agility, Amanda manages to get some kicks in on Brandon and then picks up a branch, using it to whack against his skull.

They dance around for a while until they manage to push him into the grave. As they scramble to bury him alive, a skeleton woman approaches and stands at the grave. The girls go back for Judd as Brandon springs from the grave, and he and the corpse look at each other. Amanda finds herself on a ship once again, this time most likely on Fear Lake on that fateful day. She sees Jane and Sarah arguing, and they grab each other as the boat tips back and forth. She sees Brandon as well, no longer injured, looking very confused.

The boat continues to rock back and forth, and finally the women are thrown over. Sarah struggles to break the surface of the water, but Jane holds onto her and drags her under. Neither woman comes up again. And they wake up. This time in a hospital room.

Our Dark Lord & Master

She wants to talk about Chip. This was my first step into the horror genre of books. Last passage of Chapter 1: Is that so hard? She gets into a bath drawn by Corky that ends up scalding her, and in the middle of the night her braid is cut off her head. In between all of this, Corky and Debra have been investigating. The cheerleaders you actually care about:

Janine is beside Amanda, who she says was found in the Fear Street Cemetery soaking wet. Amanda demands to see Brandon, and she gets him. Because it never existed, all the bad things never happened. Which, like, does that mean Kimmy is still alive?

All of the events of the past few years erased away? Not a ton this time around. Amanda mostly wears hoodies and sweaters, and the boys wear sneakers. The misuse of slang above is maybe the most hilarious line in the whole thing. No rap style cheers, no attempts at being relevant. For your Christmas this year, I bring you the best gift a Fear Street fan could ask for: The cover pulled from its Amazon page is pretty great. Much better than Silent Night 2 , which has a similar cover.

Santa is much more sinister here, and the girl looks appropriately scared. The pink sock is a nice touch as well. The cheerleaders are doing what cheerleaders do best: Corky and Kimmy are there, as is Debra, who are the only ones left who know the full truth of what happened in the previous years. They chat a while, and then Corky, Kimmy, and Hannah drive back, though the roads are slippery from the ice.

Kimmy is sure the evil is back. Corky refuses to believe it. The cheerleaders have to hold some quick tryouts. As they practice, the basketball team comes out, and Corky tries to get Alex to look at her. Alex drives Corky out to the river and immediately starts macking on her. Corky tells Alex they have to get out of there and then back home hallucinates the evil coming for her. My point in all this is that the evil was not immediately frozen in the ice when Corky drowned herself, nor when Sarah Fear originally drowned herself either.

Though, we learn at the end of part one, that it is still in the ice, and it has been laying dormant. When the girls summon it spoilers , it woke up.

Corky tries not to freak out and fails. Debra is chanting, candles are set up in a circle around them. Debra shows her a book she bought that tells them how to summon spirits. Corky tells them what she saw, and they decide to sit down together to summon the spirit of protection. It seems to work, as the whole room starts shaking, cold air blows out all the candles, and Debra calls out to the spirit, but Kimmy gets too scared and demands they stop. They agree not to mess with it again unless they need to.

They hold cheer practice. Three girls are at the top: Ivy, Lauren, and Rochelle. Corky tries to get on with life. Corky calls Alex to ask about Lauren, and he promises he just helped her with her homework. They go back to cheer practice, where Corky learns Lauren demanded to be an alternate in case one of the other girls gets hurt. Apparently Ivy put her up to it, and Lauren spends the whole practice asking if she should be put in every time a girl gets a cramp. They do a cheer into some handsprings, and as the girls set off the cannons, one of them backfires.

Kimmy and Debra go up to Corky after practice, now sure the evil is back. We saw this in the previous Cheerleaders books , we saw this in the Secret Bedroom. For some reason when an evil spirit possesses you, it decides to take care of your unfinished business instead of going on with whatever evil it has to do. At the pep rally, the cheerleaders show off their fire baton trick, which would definitely never be approved at a high school, which ends with one of the girls being set on fire.

The First Evil

Luckily Kimmy puts her out before any irreperable damage is done. They see Ivy and Lauren do a weird ice skating routine on the river, which makes them even more suspicious, and Debra says they have to drown her. They do what any normal person would do in this situation, and plan a party. They have the party out at the river, playing music while they ice skate. Debra has her magic book with her, Jay flirts with Corky a little, and then Corky sees Santa skating towards her with a pointy icicle, but it turns out to be Alex, who wanted to surprise everyone. We cut forward to them being on the road for the tournament.

The girls are treating Ivy really well since accusing her of being possessed by a demonic spirit. She was tall and well built, athletic, with long black hair that fell to her waist and a pale, pretty face with big green eyes. Corky watched in total admiration. Lena had to be the best cheerleader Corky had ever seen. Her sleek black hair drifting behind her, Lena lowered her hands to the bench and began doing stretching excersizes. She really is beautiful, Corky thought.

And look at how limber she is. All of this is to set up Lena when the evil takes over her body, and she backflips herself to death. The evil attacks the confetti cannon again by making it blast black bile. Jay flips out on his coach, and then the coach is murdered via water cooler. At night, Ivy sneaks out, and Kimmy, Debra, and Corky follow her. They do a weird dance on the ice and look like puppets, and I kind of love the trend of the evil being summoned by dancing.

A wild dog attacks the teens, sensing evil, and they snap its neck. The teens notice the cheerleaders and chase after them. Debra falls first, and then Corky is separated from Kimmy. She runs to the payphone to call the police and is stopped by Alex. Alex tries to drag her out of the phone booth, but she pushes him away and runs.

She finds two trees that are twined together, and she hides in their joined trunks. For hours she hears the others calling after her in what becomes a legitimately tense scene. Finally it becomes quiet, and the sun starts to rise. Corky crawls out and goes back to the motel, where she sees the team getting onto the bus, and the bus driver leaving back into the motel.

A moment of genius strikes her, and she climbs onto the bus, starts it, and drives. She realizes this means she has to drown all of her friends, something she struggles with as she gets the bus up to speed, but she accepts her fate. She points it over the bridge, jumps, and watches it fall. For some reason she walks the rest of the way to where the tournament is being held, arriving to find her coach there. She sees the entire team, and the cheerleaders, bloated and blue, looking just dredged from the lake, and she starts screaming and passes out.

When the bus dove into the lake, the ice fishermen pulled everyone out, after the evil had left their body. The best part of the Cheerleaders books! After the Reva Dalby series, this was a breath of fresh air. I genuinely enjoyed this read and the handful of twists that came with it, and I think there were some pretty good images within.

I give it four drowned basketball players out of five. Here we are, closing out the first of the trilogies. You know what, I like this. Corky, Kimmy, and Debra are still on the squad, on their way to cheer camp. Feel free to add your thoughts to that. Love quickly turns to hate, though, as Blair wins every competition and award without any effort. Hannah is wiggling her way to the front of the pack as well, but it seems someone is putting her in her place.

She gets into a bath drawn by Corky that ends up scalding her, and in the middle of the night her braid is cut off her head. Corky hallucinates wildly about cockroaches and her dead sister and razor blades. The fact that not Jennifer nor Kimmy mentioned this to anyone is baffling. This raises a bunch of questions. It was sort of implied in that last two books that it was Sarah Fear herself possessing the girls, but in this one it becomes clear Sarah was tortured by it, just as the others were.

Also, Sarah managed to kill it because she killed herself, throwing herself into Fear Lake to save her babies and then killing her babies in the aftermath, whoops , and so it was trapped in her grave until Jennifer was thrown onto it. She tries to kill Debra with her car and then push her off a tall thing, both foiled by some randos. Corky tries to fight off the evil from the inside, but she drags Kimmy out to meet her, shoves her into a river, and then swan dives off herself. The evil is defeated, everyone lives, cheer practice is back on. Bobbi is upset because she thinks Kimmy will think Chip broke up with her to date Bobbi.

She wants to get home to prep for the game later. You can't improve your level of crap, Kim, don't even try. Bobbi says they'll meet back here at seven. All the other cheerleaders leave, but Bobbi needs to get something from her locker first. As she's walking down the hall, all the lockers start swinging open on their own.

As if that isn't enough, a girl's shrill scream rises over the noise of the banging lockers. Bobbi races around the corner, but there's no-one there. So the school is haunted much like everything else in this town. She goes back into the hall of swinging lockers and finds the lockers now closed. She opens her own, grabs her things, and flees the school. At home, Bobbi and Corky are sitting in their room. Bobbi has just finished telling Corky about the lockers and the scream and Corky is ready with that age-old explanation that we've all seen about a million times in these books: Suddenly, both girls gaze across the room at the closet door that is opening by itself!

If you thought it was anything but little Sean then you really shouldn't be reading this. He bursts out and then the girls tickle him. But they have to cut the fun short because it's time for the game. Sean follows them downstairs saying "Shadyside's going to lose.

Welcome home.

I don't know who made the cheers up, but that person should be tarred and feathered because the cheers are hella lame, man. Bobbi watches Chip on the field and thinks to herself "Was he thinking about the Winstead linemen staring at him from under their helmets, about to come charging toward him? Was he thinking only about the play he had called? Was he scared to death? A few minutes later, Bobbi glances over at Kimmy and notices that she's staring straight ahead as if she's in a trance.

Bobbi's attention turns back to the game because who really gives a crap about Kimmy? To make a short story shorter, Chip ends up getting buried under a pile of sweaty football players. When they haul their asses off him, he's unconscious. He's taken away on a stretcher and I'm blaming Kimmy! The Tigers lose the game which proves that Sean was correct--Shadyside stinks. After the game, Bobbi hangs around the door to the boy's locker room and asks the first guy who comes out if Chip is in there.

He is and he'll be out shortly. Chip comes out a few minutes later and tells the worried Bobbi that he's fine, he just wants to go home and lie down. She offers to drive him home and they head for her car. On the way to his house, Chip tells Bobbi that when he was on the field, just before he got hit by the players, it was like he was totally paralyzed. It's Kimmy's cheerleader voodoo! Bobbi pulls over to the curb and they start to make out. Stine makes it a point to tell us how steamy the windshield is getting.

Don't make me gag! Just before practice on Monday afternoon, Kimmy comes running over to Bobbi. I don't even have to tell you that she's ticked off. She wants to talk about Chip. Oh shit, here we go. Kimmy says that Chip is HER boyfriend and Bobbi replies that Chip is the one who asked her out which causes Kimmy to pounce on Bobbi like a dog on a juicy bone. Miss Green and Jennifer come over and the fight is over before it really started. Miss Green says practice won't start until they apologize to one another.

At first they refuse, but Miss Green threatens to suspend them both from the squad so they finally give in. Finally the actual cheering begins. They're preparing to do a stunt in which Kimmy will stand on Corky's shoulders and dive off into Bobbi's waiting arms. Unfortunately, as Bobbi is waiting, she's totally paralyzed just like Chip was. Since she can't speak, she silently prays for Kimmy NOT to jump. But prayers go unanswered in these parts and Kimmy jumps, landing with a crack on the floor.

Let the bitching commence!

I have to admit, though, that Kimmy has good reason to bitch because that had to hurt like a motherf! She landed on her elbows and knees and cracked her forehead against the floor. As Kimmy lies there, Ronnie and Debra really let Bobbi have it: You didn't even try! You just let her fall! Miss Green says an ambulance is on its way and she'll have a long talk about this with Bobbi. Bobbi finally breaks down and runs out of the gym and the school. She only stops when someone grabs her shoulders. It's Chip who wants to know what's wrong.

Bobbi sobs that the paralyzing thing happened to her, too. Chip is headed to the doctor for tests and recommends that Bobbi do the same, but she ain't gonna. Later, Bobbi heads to Jennifer's house to vent and complain. Yes, please throw your problems onto the paraplegic. I'm sure she doesn't have any of her own or anything. But like a good friend, Jen listens Shut your freaking yap, Bobbi. Bobbi finally asks about Kimmy and Jen says she has a broken wrist. But Bobbi doesn't really care and immediately switches the conversation back to her issues.

Bobbi finally decides to go home at Not so crippled after all! Bobbi walks to the front door and rings the bell. But when Jen answers, she's in the wheelchair which makes Bobbi believe that she's going crazy. It isn't that you're crazy.

Fear Street Cheerleaders - The New Evil Review

It's that Jen is a liar. Bobbi makes some excuse and leaves. Once at home, she wakes Corky to tell her about seeing Jennifer walk. But Corky doesn't believe it. In fact, she brings up a few things she believes to be lies on Bobbi's part: Bobbi calls Corky a traitor and Corky responds with "You're crazy, Bobbi! So we're at practice again.

Corky had to stay late in the science lab so she's missing all the cattiness. Kimmy is being a royal bitch to Bobbi even when Bobbi asks how her wrist is. Bobbi just ignores the attitude and gets practice started. At least she tries to. Everyone is being uncooperative with Kimmy at the lead saying they should wait until Miss Green arrives. Bobbi argues with the chubby little slimeball until Miss Green shows up and asks to speak with Bobbi privately.

Then she cancels practice. Kimmy turns to give Bobbi a smug smile before leaving. Miss Green tells Bobbi that the girls on the squad obviously don't trust her anymore after Kimmy's accident and she'll have to step down from the squad. It's the first sign of the apocalypse! Bobbi just says "I understand" and heads for the showers where she promptly bursts into tears while undressing. She's momentarily startled because she thinks she hears someone, but dismisses it.

A few seconds later, she hears a loud clanging noise as the shower doors close. This isn't gonna be good. Bobbi doesn't think it's anything to worry about so she turns on the shower The water is scalding hot. She dodges away, but ALL of the showers are now spraying unbearably hot water. She runs for the doors, but they're predictably locked. The steam is so thick that she can't breathe and eventually passes out. Corky comes to the gym at around 4: She checks Miss Green's office and the locker room before deciding to try the showers.

She goes inside and sees Bobbi's cheerleading uniform lying on a bench and hears all the showers running, but finds it strange that none of the other girls' things are there. She steps toward the showers but stops when she spots something shiny on the floor.

It's Kimmy's silver megaphone pendant. Corky pockets it and continues toward the showers. She pushes open the doors and is shocked when a flood of steam and a rush of hot water come pouring out. She tiptoes inside calling Bobbi's name. Sadly, she finds Bobbi lying facedown under the showerheads. Her skin is as red as a lobster. Corky turns her over and sees this: Two weeks later on a cold moonlit night, Corky takes a trip to the Fear Street cemetery. She finds Sarah Fear's grave, the grave Jennifer landed at when she flew out of the bus. And then she looks upon Bobbi's grave and can't help but cry.

She thinks about the funeral, how it was raining that day. Corky starts talking to her sister's grave: I just wish you could answer. I just wanted to tell you the news. They made Kimmy captain of the cheerleaders. You probably guessed that would happen, right? Well, everyone seems real happy about it.

Fear Street: Cheerleaders

The news sure made her wrist get better in a hurry. Corky goes on to say that she wishes she hadn't been so mean the night before Bobbi died. She starts crying and repeating "I'm sorry" People, this is seriously depressing. She reaches into her pocket for a tissue and Kimmy's pendant falls out. It suddenly dawns on Corky that Kimmy could possibly have had something to do with Bobbi's death.

Kimmy was there when Bobbi died and I have the proof in my hand. Corky rushes to Kimmy's house and just barges in like she owns the place. Debra and Ronnie are there, too. Corky thrusts the pendant in Kimmy's face and says "You were there. You were there when Bobbi died. I found this in the locker room. I gave it to Jennifer. Kimmy goes on to say that she gave the pendant to Jen a month ago because the clasp was loose and she didn't like it anymore. She says it probably came loose and fell from Jen's neck, but that doesn't make Jen a murderer. Corky knows better, though--Jennifer never changed in the locker room so she couldn't have dropped it there unless she was in there to mess with Bobbi.

Corky runs out of Kimmy's house and drives to Jennifer's house. The house is dark, but she sees a car pull into the driveway and then turn around. Corky decides to follow her. Jennifer turns on Fear Street and stops when she reaches the cemetery. Corky gets out of the car and hides behind a tree, watching Jennifer's every move.

Jen starts doing this crazy dance with a Shadyside Tigers penant. Corky realizes that Jen is dancing around Sarah Fear's tombstone. After Jen curtsies before the grave, Corky's curiosity gets the better of her and she steps out from behind the tree: Don't tell me she's possessed by Sarah Fear's spirit or some shit. Jen raises her hand and suddenly Corky is trapped in a swirling tornado of dirt from Sarah Fear's grave. Corky begs to know what's going on so "Jen" explains: Jennifer died weeks ago. Jennifer died in the bus accident. She was dead that night in the rain.

She died on top of Sarah Fear's grave. I waited so long, so long Buried down there for a hundred years with Sarah Fear. When Corky asks if she's Sarah Fear, the thing replies "Not anymore. Why can't evil spirits say what they mean? Corky gazes into the open grave at an old wooden coffin with a hole in it through which she can see a nasty ass skeleton crawling with worms inside.

Thankfully Corky manages to land on her feet and drags herself out of the hole. Corky grabs her and attempts to throw her down into the grave. Spirits have no sense of hygeine. As she does, a vapor pours out of her mouth and into the grave. Corky realizes that it's all the evil pouring out of the body. The vapor goes into the coffin and dirt rains down, filling the grave once more. That was fucked up. The girls crowd around one another until some Shadyside officers show up out of the blue because they have nothing better to do than troll cemeteries.

Corky finally gets home at 3: In her room, as she's changing for bed, she cries out "Bobbi, I miss you so much! She climbs into bed and freaks out when she feels something against her leg. She turns on the light and reaches for the mystery item. It's Jennifer's cheerleading penant. The book ends with Corky screaming.
