One Saved to the Sea: A Lesbian Fairytale

Disney and Pixar Could Take a Hint From These Fledgling LGBT Fairytales

So he turned his back, and sat by his window looking out over the sea, and weeping great tears for his lost daughter, till his white hair and beard grew down over his shoulders and twined round his chair and crept into the chinks of the floor, and his tears, dropping on to the window-ledge, wore a channel through the stone, and ran away in a little river to the great sea. And, meanwhile, his granddaughter grew up with no one to care for her, or clothe her; only the old nurse, when no one was by, would sometimes give her a dish of scraps from the kitchen, or a torn petticoat from the rag-bag; while the other servants of the palace would drive her from the house with blows and mocking words, calling her 'Tattercoats', and pointing at her bare feet and shoulders, till she ran away crying, to hide among the bushes.

And so she grew up, with little to eat or wear, spending her days in the fields and lanes, with only the gooseherd for a companion, who would play to her so merrily on his little pipe, when she was hungry, or cold, or tired, that she forgot all her troubles, and fell to dancing, with his flock of noisy geese for partners.

But, one day, people told each other that the king was travelling through the land, and in the town near by was to give a great ball, to all the lords and ladies of the country, when the prince, his only son, was to choose a wife. One of the royal invitations was brought to the palace by the sea, and the servants carried it up to the old lord, who still sat by his window, wrapped in his long white hair and weeping into the little river that was fed by his tears.

But when he heard the king's command, he dried his eyes and bade them bring shears to cut him loose, for his hair had bound him a fast prisoner and he could not move. And then he sent them for rich clothes, and jewels, which he put on; and he ordered them to saddle the white horse, with gold and silk, that he might ride to meet the king.

Meanwhile Tattercoats had heard of the great doings in the town, and she sat by the kitchen door weeping because she could not go to see them. Aside from abduction, it was all fluff. Little sex, much tension from our human billionaire. Our lonely merman is sweet and adorable as all get-up. I had been hoping for more pictures, though Dec 02, Rachel Emily rated it really liked it Shelves: And he's adorable, too! And there are drawings to go with the story! Am reading the second one right now and I will probably review as a set since it's a direct continuation.

Nov 16, Theresa rated it really liked it Shelves: So far so good. Neat to see that Raiden was humble enough to propose that Aiken's IQ might be higher than his. Relationship is developing nicely. Waiting for the "big reveal" sex scene in the next book!

Jun 23, Eleeze rated it liked it. First venture into Yaoi I had some ideas of what it would be but now I know what to expect. The typical big alpha, powerful, rich, domineering and the small, cute, dependent "boy". This was sweet though, like a fairytale.

Akira was so adorably innocent, and Raiden was so determined.

There were a couple times I was worried that Raiden's obsession was going to turn the story a creepy way but it didn't and I am so glad! The illustrations were also a wonderful addition to the story. Amelita Rae is definitely a new favorite of mine, can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens next! Also, can't wait to read other books from this author. Jan 02, Foster Bridget rated it liked it. This book was interesting. The writing was not the greatest, the character development was so-so, the setting not very detailed. Still, this was a delightful read! The most engrossing aspect of this tale was Akira, the merman. He had an innocence that was so refreshing and sweet. His delight at all the experiences around him made me smile. He really stole each scene. Gaiman can do so much better than this.

I loved Gaiman's dark twist to the story but I've got to say that my favorite thing about this book were Riddell's illustrations. I think that I stared at every illustration for at least a minute. And as soon as I've finished the book, I wanted to read it again.

There was such a deal that she wanted to learn, but her sisters were not able to answer all her questions; therefore she applied to her old grandmother, who was well acquainted with the upper world, which she called, very correctly, the lands above the sea. Every motion revealed some fresh beauty, and her eyes appealed still more directly to the heart than the singing of the slaves had done. Kim Dare Goodreads Author. Kanelaire is rowdy as the wedding of their queen approaches. But Dormiar is silent as it mourns the spell that has put its princess to sleep. Comprehensively written with lucid descriptions, The Sleeper and the Spindle is a blend of Snow white and Sleeping Beauty with a few touches from Maleficient.

Dec 02, Dan Schwent rated it liked it Shelves: As a sleeping curse hits the kingdom, the queen postpones her wedding and sets off with three dwarves to free the sleeping princess and end the curse Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell team up yet again to present this short fairy tale, a dark combination of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.

As dark fairy tales go, it had its moments. I loved the sleepers talking and eventually sleepwalking after the heroes. I've said it many times before but Gaiman's tales for kids are way creepier than the ones for As a sleeping curse hits the kingdom, the queen postpones her wedding and sets off with three dwarves to free the sleeping princess and end the curse I've said it many times before but Gaiman's tales for kids are way creepier than the ones for adults.

The art by Chris Riddell added to the tale and reminded me of old woodcuts at times. I liked the ending quite a bit, not nearly as pat as I was expecting. However, at the end of the day, this was pretty average.

It was a little too short and not as fleshed out as I would have liked. I guess I expected more from Neil Gaiman this time out. Three out of five stars. View all 3 comments. Al fin un cuento en el que las mujeres se muestran valientes e inteligentes.!! Dec 13, Scarlett Readz and Runz Let's just say, it was Gaiman style through and through and the audiobook production for it delivered a whole cast to enjoy. A little twisted, as expected, it plays out as a short of the original tale with a punch of a parody. Susanne Strong Wonderful review Scarlett! Dec 13, Apr 14, Evelyn devours and digests words rated it liked it Shelves: Whimsical and deliciously dark at times, The Sleeper and The Spindle is a retold fairytale featuring a not-quite Sleeping Beauty and a sword-weilding Snow White.

I was beyond delighted when I found out that this tale is accompanied with gorgeous illustrations by Chris Riddell who also drew for the macabre children's story, The Graveyard Book. Coupled with Neil Gaiman's excellent, lyrical prose The Sleeper and The Spindle has successfully met my idea of a true whimsy fairytale. After waking from a year long magical sleep, Her Majesty the Queen is set to marry a young prince soon.

Meanwhile, a sleeping sickness is spreading far and wide in other parts of her Kingdom. When news and tales of old reached Her Majesty, she called for the servants to bring forth her chainmail and sword then finally, mounting on a horse she takes off with her brave Dwarves with a rescue mission in mind. Best Gay books based on fairytales ( books)

Do you roll your eyes at the idea of Happily Ever Afters that always seems so final and resolute? Have you ever question what other alternate endings to a fairytale could be? If your answers to all the above is a yes. I highly recommend picking this up. However, cast aside your expectations for solid characterizations because there will be next to none. This is one of those books with no room for that. Despite the lack of depths, Gaiman has still managed to eliminate most classics fairytale tropes in 70 pages or less.

I find the twists to be cleverly done and the final reveal certainly has that satisfying smackdown effect for me and best of all, Gaiman offered choices. I simply paint the colour in for fun. Otherwise, it is entirely drawn by the talented Chris Riddell. I liked this very much.
