I will certainly return to it in the future and imagine it would be a great read aloud book to use as a start for literacy in school, for creative writing. I read this to a 5 year old, who enjoyed the book. It was a different take on Cinderella who enjoyed making costumes and cupcakes. I did think the addition of cupcakes was unnecessary. My son and I were excited to read this, as he loves the traditional story of Cinderella, and I like to read different takes on fairy tales.

However, our opinions on this book were really divided! My son loved the pictures, the 'American style, action language' and the cupcakes that kept appearing.

He liked the dog and found it quite funny. He also enjoyed recognising the other characters from different fairy tales, like Red Riding Hood or Bo Peep. I did not enjoy the book much.

I found the storytelling lacked originality of language and lacked charm. The story was not particularly well written or exciting, and the pictures were so 'busy' and not that appealing to me. I did like the fact that there was a strong female lead character, however! I would not be keen to read others in this series, although I'm sure my son would! This story is a twist on the classic Cinderella. The Prince finds the glass slipper after it is left behind after a costume party, and enlists Sky Private Eye to help him find the owner.

They ask several fairy tale characters before they find a trail of pumpkin which leads to the nasty sisters' house, where they find Cinderella.

When it turns out that the slipper belongs to her the Prince gives her her own costume shop to run because she loves making costumes he loves dressing up. I was underwhelmed by this story, and I think that some of the children in my nursery class found it difficult to follow. I did like some of the illustrations, especially the ones where the fairy tale characters were dressed up for the party the three little pigs were dressed as wolves, for example. However, I think there were just too many ideas in the story. It was complicated with all of Sky's different mystery solving tools and I don't know how much the cupcakes added to the story, particularly as they seemed to do a lot of different things.

I also thought that the story was just too overtly 'girly'. Yes, changing the ending so that Cinderella didn't marry the prince, and changing ball gowns to fancy dress costumes did subvert some elements of the original story, but when it came to Sky herself I found the sparkles and stars and cupcakes and moonbeam headlights to be almost cringey.

This is an original twist on the classic Cinderella tale — Prince Charming hires Skye, the Private Eye, to search for the winner of his fancy dress competition who has disappeared, leaving only a sparkly slipper behind. As she searches, she hands out cupcakes to those who might be disappointed that they aren't the winners, and there is a recipe for cupcakes included at the end, which is a nice touch.

The illustrations were lively and my five-year-olds enjoyed finding the traditional fairytale characters in fancy dress but this book didn't really engage them or hold their attention. It just feels like it needs some heavy editing. One of the things that struck me as really odd is that, in the search for Cinderella, when Goldilocks tries on the slipper, it fits.

Skye tells us she doesn't have the other one, so she can't be the missing costume party winner. Cinderella hasn't got the other slipper either, but apparently, this is okay.
