One day I visited my local library and picked out a few random dvds and went home to have a movie marathon-weekend. One of these dvds was "The Road Home". By looking at the cover, I didn't think this was a movie for me, but anyhow I started watching it late at night. After the first few minutes had passed I thought it looked like a pretty boring movie. The first scenes are shot in black and white from a snow covered little village somewhere in the Chinese wilderness I quickly decided to turn it off and hit the bed. The next day I had little to do. The weather outside was crap so I decided to stay in.

I got bored and had nothing to do so I reluctantly started watching "The Road Home" from where I left off This is probably one of the best things I've done so far in my life ;- Since that day I've bought the DVD and seen the movies about times and it's simply one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen and I've seen a few!

The Road Home is thematically rich, dealing with loss and separation, mourning and melancholia, and what might underlie the ostensibly altruistic act of moving to another country to earn money for one's family. As always, her writing has a delicious, crunchy precision: Bit by bit, Lev gets himself on his feet and so begins a peripatetic, sometimes comic, often painful, journey through London, which Tremain uses to illustrate broader themes: Lev is rescued from the streets by Lydia, who is now staying in the comparative paradise of Muswell Hill with Tom, an English psychotherapist, and Tom's girlfriend, Larissa, a yoga teacher from Lev and Lydia's country.

Tremain handles this culture clash with adroitness and humour: The idea that he was taking a shit in the flat of an English psychotherapist made him feel very mildly afraid'. Through Lev's eyes, we see London as the incomer views it and it is not an attractive sight: As Lev's Irish landlord Christy says, with some prescience: They didn't used to be like this, but now they are. Just three weeks ago, I watched as two people watched this with tears of both joy and sadness streamed down their faces. Joy that what they had felt but been unable to articulate for their whole lives was finally given voice.

Sadness as they identified so deeply with the pain Pico feels when others assume who he is by outward appearance rather than by his life experiences. They also understood only too well how the frustration Pico felt of not being known by other as he knows himself to be and how that frustration comes out in a way others see as anger instead of pain.
