However when Shelley suddenly gets a text message warning her that she is in danger, her life unexpectedly gets totally turned upside down.

I think the thing that appeals to me about YA books is the prospect for huge, life changing character development. Shelley made some absolutely stupid decisions towards the beginning of the novel that made me cringe, but I soon began to like her and I became invested in finding out what happened to her. I liked her best friend Winston.

I enjoyed their relationship and the interactions between them. I also liked the secondary characters and felt they all enhanced the story. Her father was a pivotal character even though he only appeared a few times. Remy was important in his own way, as were Michael and the scary man on the motorbike. Typically Young Adult, it had a lot of teenage angst.

But all the characters were portrayed well. Often in Young Adult books I struggle to empathise with the young female character for some reason. It was an extremely quick read. The second half of the novel moved so quickly I finished it in one sitting. The first half was only slightly slower. Overall it kept me turning the pages! The ending was exciting. It left quite a few questions, however certainly paved the way for another one. Would I recommend it? Yes, I really enjoyed it! A chilling coming of age! What makes us who we are and are we completely responsible for our actions in life? What Lies Within is well targeted for a Young Adult audience with themes of teen-parent relationships, friendship and trust. Shelley was a very likeable protagonist making the types of decisions one would expect from a 17 year old and it was hard to watch Shelley struggle, seemingly alone, but grow stronger and more mature as the story evolves. What Lies Within is a thrilling ride with twists and turns and a gripping mystery that once revealed will have you shocked and yearning for a fitting conclusion.

She has nearly finished high school and is looking forward to going to college. She also works part time in her fathers Auto Body Shop. Sep 04, Tabetha rated it it was ok Shelves: Shelley Marano is an ordinary teenager, but when she receives a random text message, her life is turned upside down.

Everything Shelley thought she knew about her life is in question, and now she may be in danger I was enjoying this thriller until I came across a very jarring Rating: I was enjoying this thriller until I came across a very jarring scene between Shelley, and her crush Remy Chastain. I felt that this particular scene was very rushed, and very out of character for Shelley I realize that it was a symptom of a more rushed pace I tried to ignore this scene, but when there is a second encounter between the two, although Shelley makes better choices, I still feel it was, yet again, unnecessarily graphic.

I wish that these exchanges could have been replaced with additional scientific word building, more fitting with the story. It would have provided the reader with more information on nature vs. There were some shades of "Mara Dyer", but what the "Mara Dyer" series did really well was to deeply develop the characters in the very beginning, and make the reader care about every action happening between Mara Dyer and Noah Shaw throughout.

I appreciated the development of Shelley's friendship with bright nerd boy Winston, as he obviously cares for Shelley very much. The story leaves off with clues that a sequel may be in the works, but I don't think I will want to read book two. Shelley Marano asks herself the same question all seventeen-year-olds ask themselves: She wants to travel, see the world, taste life.

How will she ever escape? And why has she so often been plagued with terrors and nightmares? One day at school, she gets a text: Then she gets another message: When dad comes home, she goes to bed leaving the lights on. She decides that action is the only way to counteract fear, so she needs to get going and not wait for something to happen. She will make it happen. In her mind, she visualized a box, not mere cardboard, but metal, and put a bundle of dark energy into it.

They end up in some deadly and mysterious situations.

From the moment I started to read, the story had me in its grip. This really is a rollercoaster that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Shelley is living a normal teenage life. But then a text message turns her life upside down. She is in great danger and her mission is now to find out who she is and why she is in danger.

Her best friend Winston does everything he can to help her. But maybe he is risking his life by helping her. Will she find out who is trying to kill her? Is she able to get to know the truth without risking the lives of the people she loves. Nothing will ever be the same I loved the main characters. Shelley is an ordinary teenager. She made me angry at her some times! He loves her so much! Winston, her best friend is such a sweet boy. He likes Shelley very much and he would do anything to protect her. The end was not what I expected and left me hoping for a sequel!

I was pleasantly surprised by how everything was set, especially giving the small size of the book. I thought how everything is going to resolve with such size. Everything is built very nicely in this novel to the point where i was picturing everything in my mind as it happened.

Reading this book was really easy and can be read in one setting. It was fast paced and direct although filled with secrets and mysteries. Shelley Marano is as normal as you can WOW!!! Fast paced YA thriller about a seventeen year old girl, Shelley Marano, trying to discover her identity both literally and figuratively.

I found the characters to be likeable, especially Winston, and the unpredictable events of the story kept me on my toes until the very last page! Fun and entertaining read! Received from the author in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely loved the premise of this book having a degree in Neuroscience probably has something to do with that: When it comes to who we are, are personalities, which side of the debate wins out? Do are genes determine the type of person we are?

Or does it have more to do with the environment we are raised in; how we are treated; the experiences we have as a young person? This is ulti Rating 3. This is ultimately the question asked by What Lies Within. As our main character Shelley says over and over: Who is Shelley Marano??? The Plot Shelly Marano is a 17 year old high school student. She appears on the outside to be a normal, everyday American girl. She isn't too popular and has one extremely close friend: Winston a boy who is deeply in love with Shelley I thought Winston was a great character. On more than one occasion he had me laughing out loud.

Each day Shelley eagerly waits for the arrival of the mail to see if she has been accepted by her dream school UCLA. She can't wait to get out of her hometown and invent herself anew while away at college.

But everything changes when Shelley gets a text while sitting in class: It is difficult to accurately describe the plot from there on out without giving away key points of the story. So suffice it to say that Shelley, with her buddy Winston's help, attempts to get to the bottom of the mystery of who she is. A mystery that unfolded the day she received that cryptic text message. My THoughts Overall I thought this was a very fun read. I devoured it in just a couple of days. I am far from an expert on YA novels, but this one seemed to have all the necessary ingredients: As I stated above I thought the premise was great.

The book was full of almost non-stop action and I found myself reading late into the night that's always a good sign. Although a lot of Shelley's behavior stretches the limits of believability and the ending left me with some unanswered questions as far as the science was concerned, on a whole I found What Lies Within to be an enjoyable read. I would recommend to readers of YA novels or anyone who is enjoys a suspenseful read.

I am not an avid reader of YA novels but that didn't negatively impact my view of this book at all. I want to say again that this is a debut novel. I can only see this author's books getting better. Much thanks to author Jim Morris for sending me a copy of this book to read and review!

She receives a terrifying text message and then texts back asking "Who is this? She then receives an answer back and is a little relieved when she reads "Its your brother". The tension ramps up to high as Shelley and Winston try to work out why she is being hunted.

The answer turns out to be chilling. This YA novel is sure to appeal to anyone who enjoys a good, fast paced, action packed thriller.

The characters were well written. I liked Shelley's spunk and tenacity and Winston made a great side kick as the friend who would do nearly anything for her. Shelley's Dad was sympathetically drawn and I felt sorry that he tried so hard to connect with his daughter. I would describe it as literary psychological suspense.

The pace builds as the plot unfolds. The characters and language draw the reader in. I can quite see how Vowler has won prizes for his writing. I loved the psychological themes and felt that they were explored with authenticity. An interesting, thought provoking read. Aug 07, A. Rawson rated it really liked it. I very much enjoyed this debut psychological suspense novel, and dithered for a moment about giving it five stars.

It really was a compelling story, and I couldn't put it down. But in the end I did have a couple of quibbles - and they are real spoilers, so don't read to the end - just go read Vowler's novel. The novel is set on Dartmoor by the prison, and the atmosphere is established right at the beginning. There has been an escape, and the main character, Anna, is interviewed for the TV news ab I very much enjoyed this debut psychological suspense novel, and dithered for a moment about giving it five stars.

There has been an escape, and the main character, Anna, is interviewed for the TV news about how the locals feel. We gradually get to know more about Anna. She is a potter, and preparing for an exhibition. She lives with her family in a remote cottage. She worries about her children, she has a problematic relationship with her husband.

There is also another narrative voice - a young teacher who is idealistic and yet flawed. She wants to help her troubled students, and she becomes involved with a married colleague. Throughout these ordinary stories of families under pressure there is the constant sense of threat. That feeling of something dark and brooding - something that lies at the heart of Anna's problems with intimacy with her husband, and at the root of the problems with her son.

And eventually the narrative strands come together and the story comes to an inevitable climax. I really couldn't put it down. This theme really resonates with me, as someone who has experience of meeting a birth mother when I was thirty. So I found the question of paternity was not so convincingly answered. Still, this was an excellent debut novel and I will certainly be on the look out for Tom Vowler's work in future. Aug 18, Cleo Bannister rated it it was amazing Shelves: What Lies Within is one of those books that is easy to pick up and become absorbed in. Starting with the news that a prisoner had escaped from the prison Anna is interviewed by the local news in Devon, which starts a trail of events that build slowly and intriguingly throughout the pages.

Tom Vowler writes very convincingly from the female perspective, Anna's whole persona is completely realistic as are her relationships with her husband, Robert, teenage son, Paul and younger daughter Megan. All the characters in this book are well defined combining perfectly with the underlying story. Sympathy is roused for chickens and foxes as well as Anna. In combination we have the story of a young teacher who is keen to install a love of learning in her first post when a shocking event happens. The two narratives are utterly compelling with thought provoking themes.

This book has been likened to Before I Go to Sleep and it certainly felt to me that I was reading something new and fresh. Tom Vowler has definitely delivered something special, a book that I will remember for the storyline as well as the characters. I received a copy of this book from Amazon Vine Dec 30, Readingmatters rated it it was ok. After reading reviews here, I bought this book and was really disappointed.

I thought the writing heavy-handed - all of the 'telling' that goes on in comments about education, about women and about motherhood - it was often like lectures rather than story-telling. I know others have said he writes well from the female point of view, but I don't get that. It's like he is writing after talking to some women and using their experience verbatim. I also saw the plot coming a mile off - I knew how it was going to end but hoped I was wrong. It was unconvincing and predictable. And generally I just thought the quality of writing was okay, but not great. The writing about the landscape is okay. So, overall, I wish it hadn't been rated so highly, then I would not have expected as much.

This is like a low-level version of the hype that 'Gone Girl' received. Seems to me publishers push hard on a few books they think will make it to screenplay and are easy to sell. The insight into her husband's mind and his handling of Anna's problems was also very interesting. However, I felt the ending could have been handled differently. It finished off like a TV detective series climax which did not go with the style of the book. I would have liked Anna to confront her past and tell the truth to her family. Twijfel tussen 3 en 4 sterren. Eerder roman dan thriller. Wel leuke en vlotte schrijfstijl. Aardig verhaal, maar geen echte thriller. Mar 01, Maja Majdak rated it it was amazing. Living in a remote farmhouse in Devon, and being surrounded by woods, animals and beauty of the nature they have always felt free. But when a dangerous convict escapes from Dartmoor prison nearby, Anna can not help but to feel a prisoner of her own home. She is scared, irrational and starts to feel extremely claustrophobic despite all the space around her.

She becomes distant from her loving husband Robert, and has various problems with her son Paul. While finding about Anna and her family, we also get to know the story of a young teacher. She has just started her first job, and is really enthusiastic and idealistic in everything she does. She tries to help her students to be better and make a difference. While being naive and trying to find the best in people she becomes brutally attacked one night by none other than one of her students. She was the victim, but soon everyone, including her own family starts to doubt her version of this event.

As this two stories converge tension starts to built. The writer has done an amazing job keeping you in the story. Your brain works harder and harder as it tries to figure out things. I have also found myself irritated few times by the things that were happening to a young teacher. There was nothing that impressed me more than Tom Vowlers narrating skills and his style. Clean, understandable, simple yet impressive and thrilling. You question, but you are not confused. He composes his sentences like melodies. You feel like you could read this entire book in only a breath.

And as you finish you want to start reading it again while telling everyone around you to pick up their own copy and start reading it too. Oct 31, Sid Nuncius rated it it was amazing. I thought this was an excellent book. It is well written, intelligent, courageous in the subject matter it tackles and for me utterly gripping. As others here have said, this is mis-categorised as a crime thriller.

It is the story of a terrible crime and its effects on all concerned both immediately afterward and as their lives develop. It really isn't a thriller even though there is some well-executed and genuinely frightening threat later in the book, and it is extremely tense much of the time.

Chiefly, it is a thoughtful and insightful study of character and of how it may develop. This may make it sound worthy and dull, but it isn't.

It's terrifically readable and very involving, and I found I was as hooked as by any really good thriller. The narrative is excellently structured and paced, the characters well drawn and very believable and the sense of place on Dartmoor exceptionally well done. Tom Vowler has the sense not to spell everything out, so that the crime itself isn't described at all, just its effects and the victim's actions, thoughts and feelings or lack of them told in plain, un-hysterical language which makes it all the more powerful and disturbing.

The passages detailing a medical examination, for example, were completely calmly told yet left me almost trembling. Vowler's prose is excellent: He gets small details exactly right so that dialogue is completely natural, like the way that medical staff use the verb "to pop" - "pop this gown on," "pop your feet into the stirrups" - without clunkily drawing attention to it, which makes the whole thing completely real.

This aspect is excellent throughout. This is one of the best books I have read for some time. Warmly recommended to anyone who likes an thoughtful, intelligent and thoroughly gripping read.

This came as a real surprise having picked up the book through a Twitter link Set in the beautiful but often eerie wild lands of Dartmoor , the scene is set and two stories run side by side The writing at times is exquisite , certainly no 'wham bam thriller ' it's so much cleverer than that Tom Vowler writes beyond the crime thriller genre displaying a much greater feel for the quality novel often lacking in the 'thriller genre' today and deserves a place on the 'Bestseller' shelves.

It was a confidently written debut novel, not without a few surprises. It was interesting that the author chose to write the novel from a female point of view, especially as her experience included a rape and a slightly ambivalent pregnancy.
