She raised her beautiful face to mine, poor child, and tried to smile while she talked of going out into the world and of working hard for her daily bread; and, as I listened, my love seemed to grow stronger and deeper. I caught her in my arms, and swore that nothing should part us--that, come what would, she must be my wife. She was very unwilling--not that she did not love me, but because she was afraid of making my father angry; that was her great objection. She knew my love for him and his affection for me.

She would not come between us. It was in vain that I prayed her to do as I wished. After a time she consented to a compromise--to marry me without my father's knowledge. It was a folly, I own; now I see clearly its imprudence--then I imagined it the safest and surest way.

I persuaded her, as I had persuaded myself, that, when my father once knew that we were married, he would forgive us, and all would go well. We were married eleven mouths since, and I have been so happy since then that it has seemed to me but a single day. My beautiful young wife was frightened at the bold step we had taken, but I soothed her. I did not take her home to Wood Lynton, but, laying aside all the trappings of wealth and title, we have traveled from place to place as Mr.

Charlewood, enjoying our long honeymoon. If we liked any one particular spot we remained in it. But a letter from Italy came like a thunderbolt--my father had grown rapidly worse and wanted to see me at once. If I had been content to go at once, all would have been well.

I could not endure that he should die without seeing, loving, and blessing my wife Madaline. I told her my desire, and she consented most cheerfully to accompany me.

Everyone was settled and the playwright was about to begin her little speech summarising the plot and evoking the excitement of performing before an adult audience tomorrow evening in the library. To qualify for such exquisite treasure, in whatever way is ours, we must give the way Christ gave—every drop He had: In any case, she was discovering, as had many writers before her, that not all recognition is helpful.

I ought to have known that--in her state of health--traveling was most injurious; but I was neglectful of the fact--I listened only to my heart's desire, that my father should see my wife before he died. We started on our fatal journey--only this morning. At first my wife seemed to enjoy it; and then I saw all the color fading from her sweet face. I saw her lips grow white and tremble, and I became alarmed.

It was not until we reached Castledene that she gave in and told me she could go no further. Still you say there is no danger, and that you do not think she will die?

Toon meer Toon minder. I rejoice that we are rejoicing more. Others mistakenly think our Church is moving toward an understanding of the relationship between grace and works that draws on Protestant teachings. The Lord restored His gospel through Joseph Smith because there had been an apostasy. That view is wrong—not only about the Fall and human nature, but about the very purpose of life.

Atonement by Ian McEwan | Books | The Guardian

The Fall was not a disaster. It was a deliberate part of the plan of salvation. Without tasting the bitter, we actually cannot understand the sweet. Adam and Eve learned constantly from their often harsh experience. They knew how a troubled family feels. Think of Cain and Abel. Yet because of the Atonement, they could learn from their experience without being condemned by it.

That would be a story with no plot and no character growth. His plan is developmental— line upon line, step by step, grace for grace. As we draw close to God, He will show us our weaknesses and through them make us wiser, stronger. One early Australian convert said: We grow in two ways—removing negative weeds and cultivating positive flowers.

First and repeatedly we must uproot the weeds of sin and bad choices. Yank them out by the roots, repenting fully to satisfy the conditions of mercy. But being forgiven is only part of our growth. We are not just paying a debt. Our purpose is to become celestial beings. We need grace both to overcome sinful weeds and to grow divine flowers. We can do neither one fully by ourselves. But grace is not cheap. It is very expensive, even very dear. How much does this grace cost? Is it enough simply to believe in Christ? To qualify for such exquisite treasure, in whatever way is ours, we must give the way Christ gave—every drop He had: What possible pearl could be worth such a price—for Him and for us?

This earth is not our home. Over and over the Lord tells us why the plan is worth our sacrifice—and His. Without His dear, dear sacrifice, there would be no way home, no way to be together, no way to be like Him. He gave us all He had.

Only the restored gospel has the fulness of these truths! If we must give all that we have, then our giving only almost everything is not enough.

Wife in Name Only

If we almost keep the commandments, we almost receive the blessings. For example, some young people assume they can romp in sinful mud until taking a shower of repentance just before being interviewed for a mission or the temple. In the very act of transgression, some plan to repent. They mock the gift of mercy that true repentance allows.
