Positions such as a Chaplain, Youth Minister, a Christian Counselor, and others are left without a means to discern their calls. His oversight is unnecessary because these positions also support the local church, which he greatly values. Second, how do women discern their call into ministry? But, Harvey centers this entire book on men and pastoral ministry, but there are other places of ministry besides pastoring. These are places where even the most conservative Christians would allow women to serve. So again, Harvey could have included a chapter for one to discern other ministerial positions.

Despite this drawback there is a simple solution. There will be components that do not completely match with other areas of ministry, but the concepts of the Gospel, character, affirmation, and others can be applied to other areas of ministry. Having read this book twice and considered the areas of disagreement, Am I Called? Also, for anyone already in ministry the last chapter is a great tool to use should one ever need to reconsider or reaffirm their call to ministry.

Even the parts one disagrees with are of value because those chapters will challenge the reader to test their life and call in response to those areas. Therefore, read and study Am I Called? Perhaps Dave Harvey speaks that way all the time, but for a book, I would have appreciated a much more formal style. Another issue I had was the amount of stories that I found to be only slightly relevant or sometimes just unnecessary.

However, some of the stories were brief biographical sections about men of the faith from history that were good. It was simple but powerful. Very Biblically-based with great little stories from faithful pastoral figures. The only disagreement I had with the book was his emphasis on preaching, and while I believe a person should be able to teach based on Scripture, I do not agree with how attractive a preacher they must be as described by Harvey. Aug 27, Chandler rated it it was amazing. This was one of the best books I have read. Dave Harvey does an excellent job of going through what it looks like to be called by God into Pastoral Ministry. Dave uses Scripture as the foundation for the entire book about the calling to Pastoral Ministry. He mainly uses the the qualifications for elders found in the Pastoral Epistles. For those who think they may be called to pastoral ministry or even for those already serving in the pastoral ministry this book is both encouraging and challengin This was one of the best books I have read.

God used Dave's words to gently but firmly get my attention, help me see clearly, and realize that I am not called at this time, and that to pursue pastoral ministry against God's will would be damaging to whichever church I might attempt to lead. I am immensely thankful for Dave Harvey's writing and for God's grace toward His sometimes over-ambitious children.

He's humble, genuine, biblically grounded and cares deeply that the high Call to ministry isn't taken lightly. The short bios from past saints at the conclusion of every chapter were also phenomenal! I've not ever read a more practical guide to soberly evaluate whether you're called and to what purpose. Worth reading if you have ever felt a pull toward ministry. Provides necessary, heartfelt warnings and wisdom for aspiring and serving pastors. A true blessing and help in that regard.

Am I Called, is broken down into three parts: Approaching the Call, Diagnosing the Call and Waiting. In the first part Harvey outlines the call to be a pastor and the summons it entails. Have you been given a desire to be a pastor? Do others agree this is a calling you should take seriously? More importantly, what does the Bible have to say about the office of a pastor? The author interweaves the gospel and biblical theology to give us reason for pause as we evaluate ourselves and our calling. In the second part the reader is guided through specific criteria for which we should assess the call to be a pastor.

He asks relevant questions regarding the your spiritual life and what state you currently find yourself in. Based on biblical requirements how are you leading in the home? Do you have a genuine love for the lost? Can you outline a biblical text and preach a sermon? Do your fellow church members affirm this calling on your life or do they recommend you find a second day job?

The final part of this book address probably the hardest truth to swallow and that is you might just have to wait. You can have all the training in the world, know the right chapter and verse to counsel a church member through hard times, but has God ordain you for this position and given you the opportunity to pursue this calling? My Takeaway This is a subject that is close to me personally because over the course of the past several years I have felt this call into pastoral ministry grow.

I had heard of this book, but not read it until just about a month ago. I felt both convicted and affirmed throughout the book. While I find myself in a position of waiting, I feel this book has answered a lot of questions and provided me with a framework in which I can come back to time and time again to refresh myself with my calling. If you are a pastor now, I would suggest you read this book to see if your current position lines up with the criteria submitted within these pages. If you are a student looking forward to ministry, know the road is not an easy one, nor should it be.

What are some guidelines you would use in making this decision? And how should you evaluate yourself? The book is divided into 3 parts. Christ himself in them! But Harvey is right to show that God only calls to ministry, those whom He has fore-known and, fore-called to be His sons.

Next, Harvey moves on to discuss about the different qualification a man must have he if he is called to the ministry. Harvey does not derive these qualifications from experience of from his own wisdom, rather he points the readers to various passages that talks about such qualifications and shows what it means for the individual. I felt the section on the agreement of the community with regards to the call was one that was addressed excellently. Harvey is able to show clearly that although the call is individualised, yet it is never individualistic. God calls us, and we are affirmed about this calling in us, though the community.

He gives tips and also general directions on what the person could do during this time to prepare himself for the ministry. I felt that this chapter could have been elaborated and lengthened a little bit more. Some of them were really short advises that should have been addressed at a greater length. Harvey has also very helpfully, placed stories of different individuals called by God as a start-point for his chapters, though the link is that clear, overall, I thought it was a good start to introduce these preachers to would-be preachers. If it creates a desire to want to dig up more information about into their lives, it would certainty be beneficial to them.

I recently read it and I was blown away by the engaging writing style, the excellent content, and the biblical foundation and Gospel emphasis which was present throughout the book. As someone who has and still am seeking to understand what the call to ministry is, I highly recommend this book to any man who is in doubt concerning his potential calling into the Christian ministry. Somehow drifting into the comfortable numbness that is working in a plant and providing for me and my wife. This is one of those little books that God used to rekindle the fire of my calling and to reaffirm my faith and my purpose. I would suppliment this with the first part of Darrin Patrick's Church Planter which gives a magnificent description of what a Man of God called into pastoral ministry is supposed to be based on the scriptures.
