I was in absolute refusal to let go of the worlds of multiple Londons, pirates, magicians, thieves, and such amazing characters. I never thought an author would be able to make me connect with so many beautiful, complex, flawed characters. I find it especially prevalent in the last book no spoilers but somehow V. Schwab managed to make even minor characters throughout the tale shine. I fell immediately in love with all there main ones too of course. I could probably write an entire review solely about Holland's characterization, despite it truly being Lila who stole my heart away.

Throughout the story each character manages to truly remain a part of themselves that we see in the beginning, yet the changes are gradual and beautiful making everyone develop not just personally, but amongst the other characters. I love the way family, friendship, loyalty, and love are used within the novel and for once I found a book series where the romance does not feel overpowering or seen as more important than other relationships.

Every death felt mourned properly, every character tied into the story, and nothing truly felt needless.

Aside from the characters I will save you all from the paragraphs I could write gushing about them the world building is fantastic. No loose ends, no information dumps, it was original, unique, and imaginative. Reading this story was, to me, like reading a children's book for adults in the sense that almost anything felt possible. Although perhaps that's mainly the addition of pirates added in.

I loved the way these worlds tied to our own, yet still kept that separate, high fantasy, work within them. I especially loved having more to the world added aside from London, the differences between the multiple Londons, and how even with all these things nothing ever felt like too much. Schwab's trilogy pushes limits many would not even poke a stick at. I, for one, am happy she ditched the stick altogether, grabbed it with her bare hands, and molded it into the story of a lifetime. Dec 02, Thegazzardian rated it it was ok. Summary of the books, light spoilers but tried to avoid specifics.

Plot of the first book: A character who can travel between worlds gets sucked into a cool, if a little underdeveloped adventure that encompasses getting a dangerous artifact back to the mysterious world. The plot has stakes, there is suspense, and it plays well within the concept of the four connected worlds, while leaving some hints that we'll find out more about them.

The Magicians Trilogy Boxed Set

Nothing of any importance happens until the very last chapter. All the characters are emo, or cardboard. Plot of the third book: There's a big baddy that can kill all the main characters, but then doesn't for reasons. The main characters come up with a plan to defeat the baddy, then follow the plan and do.

It takes forever because every character has POV chapters now. We still don't find out anything new about the other Londons. View all 3 comments. Dec 31, Alessandra Scarpetta rated it it was ok.

Meh Not many likeable or relatable characters. If it weren't for Lila, I woulda quit. The romance felt shallow and left me wanting more, which grew to apathy towards some relationships over time.

Shahar Shenhar 😠 Cheats 😠 at World Magic Cup? Loses $257,500?

Either the magic was incredibly inconsistant or the characters weren't very bright because cool abilities were normally demonstrated once and never used again, so fights seemed like everyone forgot what they were capable of Oct 12, EscapistBookReviews rated it it was amazing Shelves: Kell is a magician from a world of magic, who has the rare power to travel between worlds. Lila is a London pickpocket from our world, circa When the latter steals a dangerous magical artifact from the former, she becomes involved in a cross-world adventure, as the two of them race to dispose of the thing before it can cause a disaster.

Further adventures ensue in the following two books. And also there is a magic tournament, inter-world conflicts, intra-world politics, family stuff, piracy, romance, exciting fight scenes, stylish coats, some world-eating bad mojo for the heroes to defeat, and more snappy dialogue than you can shake a stick at. The main characters have thematically similar arcs, the shape of which is summarized in the dedications of the three books: But even without that, the characters - major and minor - are great, the setting is great, and I would eagerly read anything more in the setting that Schwab might write in the future.

That being said, the trilogy concludes in a satisfying way. One bit among many of note is: I usually hate it when authors try to inspire sympathy for characters who have previously done terrible things. It is a tactic that rarely works for me.

The first book could be read as a standalone adventure, so if it sounds at all like something you might like, I recommend giving it a go. Jan 13, Chad Bay rated it really liked it. I really enjoyed this series. Incredibly creative and the world building is vibrant and well illustrated I fell right into the world s of these characters instantly, and by the third book was fully invested in seeing how it played out. Schwab does such a great job in the first book of introducing a diverse range of seemingly disconnected characters who all come to a head in one way or another throughout the series.

I loved these characters - each drawn with delightful detail - and was genuinely moved by many of the story lines. The darkness in the books is equally balanced by the light each character finds, in their own ways, when the story comes to a close. Throughout the series, though, I did feel somewhat disappointed with the narrative voice.

I just felt a little too modern slang-y most of the time However, I gave up on this grievance early on in the third book, because the story became so interesting and there was so much going on that I was completely wrapped up in following the plot through to its conclusion. All of this is against an intriguing backdrop of four parallel Londons of varying degrees of magical proclivities and the ability of only a select few the Antari to travel between them.

A very compelling story indeed. At certain points, the story did seem a bit juvenile for instance, I'm a tad tired of the magic competition in Red London hasn't stuff like that been wrung dry already? However, the third book, with Holland's origin story, made up for all that. The characters are very well-rounded and relatable. I knew, even as I turned the last page, that I'm going to miss living vicariously through Kell, Lila, Alucard, Rhy, and yes, even Holland. Review in form of a stream of thoughts: Four worlds divided by distance, as well as magic the travelers are marked by blood and darkness and shalowness Worlds unexplored, even after pages - characters without substance that never learn and oh, how unfit for their roles they all are!

The Divine Cities Trilogy. The Recoletta Novels Limited Edition. Book Five of The Demon Cycle. The Sea of Sorrows. Saying goodbye to Quentin is bittersweet, but saying goodbye to a Quentin who achieves some peace at last fills the farewell with a reassuring optimism for his future. Rowling while remaining refreshingly original. Grossman tells exciting fantasy adventures, but at the same time deconstructs the fantasy, as his characters discover that even magical wish-fulfillment is no guarantee of happiness, and even a job casting spells in a magical land is still work.

This is the end, beautiful friend. One of the lovely things about this series is watching Quentin evolve from depressed teen to clear-eyed man. Battle scenes are laid out with vivid, near-storyboard detail. Grossman brings the story home on a very satisfying chord. We are all magicians. Life, like magic, gives back only as much as you put into it. It takes hard work, it hurts, and you have to be ready to fail. But deep within us all lies the power to enchant the world.

This third book, at turns a heist story, a meditation on the act of creation, and an apocalyptic disaster tale, continues the adventures of main character Quentin Coldwater. It mixes genre deconstruction with psychological realism, full of self-aware figures who are cognizant of all the tropes of fantasy fiction, while at the same time working to fulfill those tropes or push against them.

Writing, like magic, is a craft, and Grossman performs it oh so well. Fantasy fans will rejoice at its publication. The final volume will please fans looking for action, emotion, and, ultimately, closure. Fans of the trilogy will be pleased. Lev Grossman proves again that the costs and consolations of creation—both of Fillory and of this conclusion to his trilogy—are mighty forces. Literary perfection for those of us who grew up testing the structural integrity of the backs of wardrobes.

Just some of the best magic I have read, ever. The Magician King is a triumphant sequel.
