A New York hooker tries to keep her daughter out of the clutches of the mobsters she works for. The lives of an ex-con, a coffee-shop owner, and a young couple looking to make it rich intersect in the fictional and hypnotic Rain City. Feeling lonely and neglected by her overworked husband, Roxy, a Depression-era farm wife, is drawn into an ill-advised affair with Jack, their hired hand. This romantic crime drama takes place on an North Carolina tobacco farm during the Great Depression, where a young farmer and his beautiful wife reside and struggle to make a living.
Roxy, the heroine, lives a life of isolation and monotony, constantly doing housework and caring for their toddler daughter.
