Happy Birthday, Moon by Frank Asch was published many years ago, but it is one of my all-time favourites. The cleverly written dialogue creates a humorous situation which culminates to a lovely conclusion. Frank Asch has also done a great job with the pictures which are simply done and crafted to explain the text.
A friendly bear wants to give the moon a birthday present. He travels to the mountains so the moon can hear him--he speaks to the moon, and hears the echo of his voice, unbeknownst to him. A very young child would enjoy this best as an older child may spot the mistake with the echo and think him a rather silly bear. Weston Woods Studio productions, again, makes the static illustrations move and entrance the viewing listener.
Bear travels to the highest mountain, searching for a birthday gift for his friend, Moon. Or so it seems. This book, with its appealing illustrations, celebrates friendship and is a perfect book for parents and young children to read and enjoy together. Bear decides that the moon needs a birthday present, so he goes into the mountains to ask the moon what he wants for his birthday.

When he talks with the moon he thinks the moon is talking back, but it is really Bear's echo. The story and illustrations are simple and sweet. Aug 16, Karla Winick-Ford rated it really liked it. Admittedly, this is the first moon bear book I have read. I like that it's a birthday book- young children will enjoy.
It's warm and endearing. The text lends itself well to discussion about echos and such. Illustrations were pretty limited and basic.

The other characters in the show then make their appearance, and the theme and plot of the show then comes to place. Throughout the episode, the theme ex; "sleep", "doctors", "Thanksgiving" is learned about, and a lesson is learned at the end of the episode. Songs and jokes accompany the episode.

The story begins with a brown baby bear, named Bear, pondering on the idea to give the moon up in the night sky a birthday present. Bear acts as a caregiver towards Ojo the bear cub, Treelo the lemur, Tutter the mouse, and Pip and Pop, who are two otters. The character "Shadow" narrates a segment with shadow puppets in each episode. Most of the segments are in song, while some are simply a short story relating to the episode's theme. At the end of the program, Bear sings the goodbye song with Luna, the moon.

Several of these characters appeared in a music video for the We Are Family Foundation. Bear also appeared as a celebrity in the revival of The Hollywood Squares ; he notably appeared in Whoopi Goldberg's final episode. Bear in the Big Blue House was initially produced from to Written by Stephanie Paris. Although I like to poke fun at this show, I must admit it has several pleasant qualities that make it a wonderful show. It's mainly for children not yet "graduated" into shows for older kids.
It has a "Mr. Rogers" type of quality in that Bear talks to the children watching and sort of invites them in to play with all of his friends in the big blue house.

It can teach things such as being nice to others, even if they do something you might not like. I recommend this show for children aged up to about 7 or 8 years. This show can be a nice show for a young family looking for something enjoyable to watch with their children.
