The temple itself sits on the top of one of the cliffs - lots of steps to get up there with limited views of it as non-worshippers are not allowed in. The view of it on the top of the cliff is just ok. We didn't come out for sunset viewing but apparently that is very popular. He was helpful at the temple, but you don't really need a guide and if you have your own transport you'll save money. We left for Uluwatu around 4pm and got back to the car by 7pm.

Try and sit facing the stage for the best photos. Love the place for its impressive view of the sea, good place to catch the sunset. The Kecak Dance is alright, but I would give it a miss.
