I immediately wish I could pick them back up. In this creepy old house it was nice to be holding on to something familiar.

Grandma Jo looks down at my stuff and wrinkles her nose. What does that even mean? I shoot my dad a look like, Seriously? But he shrugs and shoots me one back like, Please just do what she says. I let out a really obvious sigh, but I pick up the skateboard and take it into the empty closet, which smells overwhelmingly of dust and old ladies and something disgustingly chemical. Before I set the skateboard down, I run my fingers over the collage of stickers on the bottom—Ben put them there when it used to be his.

God, I wish Ben were here right now. My grandmother gives a curt, satisfied nod once the skateboard is out of sight, and her chin dips down into the lace collar of her high-necked black dress, which looks like it came straight out of a museum. I hate that I have to go sit in the parlor when I could be at home in the family room, watching TV with Snickers curled up on my feet.

I hate everything about this place, and I really, really hate that Mom and Dad are leaving me here for four entire weeks. Then she finally leaves, her crunchy skirts rustling behind her and her cane thumping on the floor. When I hear her moving across the entryway downstairs—clomp-click-rustle, clomp-click-rustle—I take what feels like my first full breath in ten minutes.

I turn to my dad. There are all these pictures of her holding me and setting up tea parties for me and dressing me in frilly pink outfits before I was old enough to do anything about it. My dad is her only kid, and since Ben is a boy, I was her first opportunity to do girly stuff. But by the time I was in preschool, I was done with all that and had moved on to fire trucks and Legos and soccer balls.

Maddie and I spent about an hour howling over how ridiculous it was before I stuffed it in the back of my closet under a pile of old cleats. Plus, this house freaks me out. How am I supposed to sleep with that on the wall? He actually wants me around. But Martin will take good care of him. He even promised to take him camping. You know how much Snickers will love that. Is this house haunted?

It was probably just the pipes banging or something. Her bright pink shirt looks totally out of place in this room, where everything is beige and gold and printed with old-lady upholstery patterns. I need enough AJ love to last me four weeks. Mom and Dad are headed to the Amazon rain forest to do research on malaria. By the time it gets up to your waist, your machete hand will be all the way inside its body.

Totally disgusting in the most awesome way possible. Honestly, a giant snake would probably be easier to deal with than Grandma Jo. Dad heads downstairs to make sure Grandma Jo has their emergency contact information. Even though I left him at home on purpose—what kind of twelve-year-old still needs a stuffed animal to sleep? I make myself roll my eyes anyway. I crouch down and press my ear to the grate, and the noise gets a little louder.

After a few seconds it breaks off as suddenly as it started. The room is pretty warm, but goose bumps spring up on my arms anyway. I tell myself the noise was probably coming from outside, or maybe from a TV downstairs. My dad would know if this place was haunted—he grew up here, after all. I snatch Hector off the bed, bury my nose in his nubby fur, and give him a quick, tight squeeze for reassurance. Would you like to tell us about a lower price?

Grandma Jo wants nothing more than to transform her adventurous, fun-loving granddaughter into a prim and proper lady…and AJ hates it.

But even the most respectable ladies can hide some truly surprising secrets, and AJ must decide for herself what it truly means to be one of the good guys. Read more Read less. There is so much to love and admire about Granny, her undercover work and her menagerie of animals. I needed a light and humorous cozy this weekend and this one was delightful.

Sep 22, Kate Eileen Shannon rated it it was amazing. I love cozies with senior sleuths, they are usually a lot of fun. But nothing prepared me for Granny. First her name — Hermoiny Vidalia Criony Fiddlestaat. There are quite a few names that are just a wee bit different. Or there is no name. For example, the chief of police is known simply as The Big Guy. As well as weird names there are weird buildings in Fuchsia, Minnesota — apparently the founder of the town was a wee bit eccentric and odd was his building code.

If you are poor you are crazy, I love cozies with senior sleuths, they are usually a lot of fun. If you are poor you are crazy, if you are rich you are eccentric. She likes sexy night clothes. She drives a red Corvette convertible. Unbeknownst to her children, or anyone else other than Big Guy, she works undercover as a store detective. Suddenly the town has a rash of large robberies and it looks like Granny is involved. I picture Betty White as Granny. Less skillfully done and it would have been a complete disaster.

If you want something to cheer you up or are just looking for a fun read, this is it. Nov 12, Melina rated it it was amazing. This was a really lite an whimsical story, I absolutely loved it. If you are looking for a lite, quick, fun read, then this is definitely the book for you. Granny is definitely not your typical "granny". She likes to sleep in sexy lingerie and read Fifty Shades of Gray, all without her three children, Penelope, Starshine, and Thor, not knowing.

She lives in the town of Fuschia, MN. This is just such a quirky and fun read. But Granny is also works undercover for the stores in the town "hooking crooks". Is she losing her mind and does she need to be sent to the wrinkle farm when she starts seeing a good looking young man that disappears and things that have been stolen from around town starts showing up at her house.

I recommend this book, it will lessen your stress, for sure. I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest review. Sep 13, Linda rated it really liked it Shelves: I thought the story was funny!! It is a very short, fast paced read. Granny is quite a character, and the way she watches out for her neighbors shows she has a kind heart. The way she fools her daughters into thinking she's a frail, old woman is hilarious, but her son's got her number!!!

The situations she gets herself into are laugh out loud funny!! I like her gentleman love interest, too, plus this Granny drives a hot red Corvette!!!! Furthermore, some major crimes take place, pointing to Granny, leading others to consider sending her to the "wrinkle factory," where she wouldn't be able to eat meals of chocolate or wear her "sexy grandma" nighty. She has a wild side. The characters are fun and I think thats a fun way to check on people living alone. But I won't be doing any of those things. The suspense is well done. I figured out some of it but not all. It keeps your attention and sad to see the fun end. Lots of Drama, action, laughter. It is also a clean fun cozy mystery. Granny is not your average grandmother.

She works for the cops. When she sees a person commit a crime she accidental stops them with her umbrella or gets in their way while she pushes a button so police chief will come and arrest them. Just a few people know what she is up too. Did you have any toy or game background before this?

No, other than just being a fan. Advertisement But since then, I've gotten more involved, so I've joined a group of play-testers called the Gamemakers Guild. It's a meet-up in Boston twice a month, and everybody brings their game to the group, and people play-test each other's games and give each other feedback. Not until you put it in front of people do you see what kind of fun there is.

You could have a game that works -- no one will get stuck, the game will have a start and a finish -- but you don't see anybody having fun. That happens with a lot of my little projects. What does it take to make a game fun? Sometimes it's a bit of storytelling. My target audience has always been that 8- to year-old that's playing with the parents, and the image I usually have in my mind is just the notion that the kid has the look of glee as he plays the whammy on his parents or his uncle or just somebody who he'd never have a chance to best in real life.

Despite a cinematic narrative akin to a rogue spaghetti western, The Slew nearly succumbs to the usual pitfalls faced by turntablist albums. The fictional town of Fuchsia Minnesota defies all of those rules. I was given this ebook to read for reviewing and being part of Granny Hooks A Crook book tour. Unfortunately, in this book even the animals are ridiculous. I mean, this is all the many layers of interpretation anyway. But I won't be doing any of those things. Just a few people know what she is up too.

That's the fun I'm trying to generate in most of my games. Do you play a lot of games with your family? We play different kinds of games, and we have played less games as they've gotten older. Sometimes it's computer games, things like that, but I like the aspect of a board game to bring you back around the table. I won't say it's a sore subject to my family, but since they're the victims of my early games, maybe the ones that aren't as fun, by the time I get it done, they're, like, so done with that, Dad. What are the components you need to make a game? You basically just need paper, pencil and an imagination.
