The Key (The Heavens Gate Trilogy Book 2)

I was very taken with Hope's friend Tabitha and her father's strange behaviour. I also really appreciated that the book mentioned some of the more real issues in the world. It always strikes me as ridiculous, when I read a book about important supernatural creatures particularly when angel mythology is involved and their sole focus is a random teenage girl in middle-class suburbia.

Sure, this book is about a teenage girl in an American suburb but they don't forget that there are people with much bigger problems and it added some nice balance to the story.

Hope was only fifteen and her young age definitely showed. There were a few incidences when I wished she would figure things out as quickly as the reader does. There was also one what are you Still, it was a very enjoyable book and I'll definitely read the sequel. Jun 09, Bennita rated it liked it Shelves: I actually liked this story more in the beginning before any of the paranormal elements were introduced. This was a good book, but once secrets were revealed, I felt that more conflict could have been constructed from it earlier in the story.

Locked had a Twilight feel, but that's not a criticism, since I loved all of the Twilight books, but it had the awkward new girl and the brooding, secretive hot, not-so-human guy vibe. This book had lots of suspense and some interesting twists.

The daemons we found in that room with them — crimson skinned monsters with snakes for eyes and limbs — smashed consciousness from us. Pegleg rose to his feet. He seemed a bit unsteady, but whether that was from the sea, the wine, or his nerves, Dunk could not tell. He unlatched the door, pulled it open and held it wide for the man. Pegleg nodded his thanks and then stumped his way on through, out into the crisp, night air of the open sea.

A massive crystal ball sat perched on a low table in one corner of the room. A scene from the Spike! Magazine Tournament finals played within it, sending a ghostly light flickering around the room.

The only other light came from an oil lamp that hung from the ceiling over the red velvet couch on which Pegleg sat hunched over the low, wide table before him. Papers of all sorts covered the table, held in place by the Spike!

I'll state for clarity that I read the individual books that are now out of print and we're collected into the gigantic AAfS, but it is a 1: Just to get it out of the way I'll tell you that if you're a fan of fantasy and crude humor a la It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia then this is the book for you.

Except, unlike It's Always Sunny, the characters here have some decency buried deep down underneath and they care about each other, even though they spend most of their time trying to convince one another that they don't. Sam Sykes, the Author, has tweeted many times about how much relationships between characters is an important part, if not the most important part, of fiction for him.

This ideal shines through all three books or one big boy of the Aeon's Gate trilogy. The super violence, jokes about bodily fluids, and beautiful detail are all window dressing to what Sykes believes is truly important, and that is the ties that bind these characters together, whether it be guilt, hate, or love, there is deep emotional glue gelling everyone in Lenk's crew to one another. Each of the six main characters is well developed and likable in one way or another. Everyone shines in every part of every book.

There is never a moment of, "oh no, its a fill in blank chapter again. Sykes if you ever read this please consider writing some solo Bralston stuff. I'm excited to eventually pick up the City Stained Red and would say that the Aeon's Gate will be a story that at some point I read again. Read these books my babies. I made it through the first book in this omnibus but could only get 75 pages into the second before the author's glacial pace became unbearable. This could have been a fun read but for the failure to advance the plot and the totally uninteresting psychological monologues.

If a book is billed as action fantasy, it should deliver action rather than tiresome discourses on the shallow and predictable emotional "development" of the character. I am amazed that Brent Weeks provided a blurb for this garbage.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Definitely cool to see the earlier history of the characters, but not as poslished as that series, which is to be expected. Still a fun read. An easy and approachable style of writing An easy and approachable style of writing and a mix of eclectic and oddball characters make this series a delight to read. The characters come off extremely likable with realistic relationships and interactions with one another and the humor helps to lighten the occasionally grim subject matter. All in all a highly enjoyable addition to my fantasy collection that skews more toward dark fantasy with a bit of a Lovecraftian bent with well realized and fascinating characters.

Love this book, many twists and turns, love getting into the characters heads. Sam has a unique voice that practically screams through the entire series. Buy this book, you will not regret it.
