Il faut rechercher la jouissance mutuelle. Mais ces cas sont rares. Cette pratique existe aussi parmi les ressortissants congolais en Europe. Pour le moment je vais me centrer sur la retraite.
Parfois, pour des cas graves, on peut recommander une retraite de deux semaines. Il y a des retraites collectives et des retraites individuelles. Il faut bien entendu apporter sa Bible, un cahier et un bic. Elles ne dorment pas. Avait-elle pu identifier les personnes qui la poursuivaient? Tu connais mes besoins particuliers, tu connais ceux qui me lient et me tourmentent. Tu connais mes soucis, les esprits mauvais, les esprits acquis. Allez, allez, sanza sanza. Ce qui constitue en fait le paradoxe de la transformation sociale. Veiller est la norme. Le cas se centre surtout sur les rapports domestiques. Deze culturele dynamiek vindt plaats in een strak georganiseerde gebedsgroep: De centrale vragen in dit boek zijn: Wat is het culturele referentiekader van de leden?
Bij het bestuderen van deze culturele dynamiek laat ik me inspireren door de literatuur over religieuze veranderingen. Die literatuur stelt dat als mensen geconfronteerd worden met diverse culturele invloeden die zorgen voor conflicten in het dagelijkse leven, het religieuze ritueel een creatief en vernieuwend proces kan zijn waarin het waardensysteem dat de sociale orde onderbouwt opnieuw geformuleerd of bevestigd wordt.
Deze culturele identiteit is het resultaat van culturele interacties die al lang in eigen land plaats hebben gevonden. Mijn hypothese is dat de habitus van een bepaalde groep binnen de Congolese diaspora in Europa een continuering is van een reeds verworven identiteit tijdens de interacties van lokale en intercontinentale culturen. Deze interacties hebben vanaf de zestiende eeuw plaatsgevonden en hebben nog altijd invloed op de identiteit van verschillende generaties Congolezen.
Om inzicht te krijgen in dit proces zoek ik de sociale relevantie van het ritueel van Le Combat, waarvan de leden combattants worden genoemd. Het gaat om een gesloten groep die voornamelijk bestaat uit Congolese vrouwen uit de economische middenklasse. De sociale contacten van de leden beperken zich tot de leden van dezelfde religieuze groep. Ik geef enkele kenmerken van deze gebedsgroep die in Congo Kinshasa in het midden van de jaren tachtig door een Congolese sociologe is opgericht. Deze sociologe heeft vanaf begin jaren negentig van de vorige eeuw wereldwijd groepen van Le Combat gevormd binnen de Congolese diaspora.
Binnen deze gebedsgroep is het huwelijk het ideaal van elke combattant. Men wordt lid door een consult, gevolgd door een bijbelse initiatie en het participeren in een therapeutisch ritueel. Tijdens mijn onderzoek heb ik vooral gekeken naar vrouwen en heb ik hun motieven voor een consult binnen de groep bestudeerd. Naar voren kwam dat de vrouwen in de groep naar hulp zoeken bij langdurige ziekte, ongehuwd zijn, onvruchtbaarheid, huwelijksconflicten of het uitblijven van een verblijfsvergunning.
De term Le Combat heeft eigenlijk een dubbele betekenis. In de eerste plaats duidt het begrip op onheil zoals hierboven beschreven. Dit onheil wordt beschouwd als een zichtbaar teken van onzichtbare krachten of geesten die bezit hebben genomen van het lichaam van het slachtoffer. In de tweede plaats verwijst Le Combat naar het ritueel zelf. De eerste fase bestaat uit het zoeken naar de oorzaak van het onheil door het volgen van bijbellessen. Daarna wordt in de tweede fase, de retraite, de diagnose gesteld door zowel de oorzaak als de veroorzaker van het onheil te benoemen.
Tenslotte volgt in de derde fase de purificatie waarbij de kwade geest uit het lichaam van het slachtoffer wordt verwijderd door een spirituele reiniging. Le Combat is een transnationale religieuze beweging met een intensieve communicatie tussen de hoofdzetel in Kinshasa en de filialen in de diaspora. Daarom heb ik, naast het uitvoerig bestuderen van het ritueel, drie aspecten belicht van de cultuur in Kinshasa waar Le Combat ontstaan is. Het eerste aspect is de veranderende gezinssituatie in de economische crisis die sinds jaren Congo teistert.
Dit levert spanningen in het gezin op omdat mannen in de Congolese cultuur pas respect krijgen als zij hun echtgenotes economisch onderhouden. Deze situatie veroorzaakt onzekerheid bij mannen en brengt spanningen met zich mee rondom hun mannelijkheid. Het tweede aspect dat ik bekeken heb is het verenigingsleven in Kinshasa. Het lidmaatschap van een vereniging wordt gekenmerkt door reciprociteit. Ik ben het oneens met de mening dat het zich aansluiten bij een groep in Kinshasa een teken is van economisch falen.
Ook in het Westen, waar mensen zeker zijn van een basisinkomen, wordt de Congolese diaspora namelijk gekenmerkt door een intens verenigingsleven. In het boek worden casussen gepresenteerd en geanalyseerd om te laten zien dat crisissituaties de normale structuren en sociale systemen van een gemeenschap zodanig op de proef stellen, dat ze kunnen leiden tot een nieuwe consensus of tot een breuk. Na de Inleiding opent hoofdstuk 1 met de casus van het overlijden van een vrouw die lid was van de gebedsgroep. Aandacht wordt vooral besteed aan de leegte die rond haar overlijden ontstond en aan de handelingen die normaal door verwanten zouden worden uitgevoerd.
Vanuit deze situatie ga ik terug in haar leven.
Ik laat zien waarom ze lid werd van de gebedsgroep en hoe haar problemen van ongehuwd zijn en ongeneeslijk ziek zijn er toe hebben geleid dat ze binnen de Congolese gemeenschap van hekserij werd beschuldigd. Door lid te worden van een gebedsgroep kreeg zij de gelegenheid om zin te geven aan haar situatie en toegang te krijgen tot een nieuwe religieuze familie en een nieuw sociaal netwerk. In de beschrijving schenk ik ook aandacht aan haar nieuwe leven. Van een autonome vrouw in het Congo van de jaren tachtig werd ze na haar migratie naar Europa tot een kind die gehoorzaam moest zijn aan het gezag van haar spirituele ouders.
Deze regels van gehoorzaamheid herinneren aan de rurale omgeving in Congo. Door middel van deze beschrijvingen maakt de lezer kennis met de metamorfose die mensen binnen Le Combat ondergaan. Afflictie komt in de literatuur over sub-Sahara Afrika naar voren als een onvoorspelbaar onheil en ziekte. Doordat boze krachten van het lichaam bezit hebben genomen is genezing alleen mogelijk door het uitvoeren van een ritueel waarin de oorzaak van de bezetenheid wordt achterhaald. Functionalisten zien het ritueel, vanwege de gerichtheid op cohesie, als een basisvoorwaarde van de sociale gemeenschap.
Via het ritueel wordt de verstoorde sociale orde hersteld en keert men terug naar de traditionele harmonie binnen de groep. Daarom vormt in dit laatste geval de familie het belangrijkste publiek dat aanwezig is bij het ritueel. Voor structuralisten ligt de essentie van het ritueel in de dynamiek van verandering door het dramatiseren van rivaliteiten.
Dit is voornamelijk het geval bij behandelingen binnen de niet regionale gebonden cultus, waar het zoeken naar hulp meestal het toetreden betekent tot de gebedsgroep. In hoofdstuk 3 laat ik de structuur van Le Combat zien. Het hoofdstuk begint met het geven van inzicht in de Kongolese diaspora in Nederland.
Wat is de reden van migratie; wat doen de Congolezen in Nederland; wie zijn ze, hoe is het contact tussen Congolezen onderling; hoe is het contact met autochtone Nederlanders; en wat zijn de organisaties van Congolezen in Nederland? De Congolese diaspora bestaat uit vrij veel geschoolde mensen. Het gaat meestal om stedelingen, met Lingala als lingua franca. Hoewel in Nederland de etnische groep van de Bakongo het meest vertegenwoordigd is, zijn ook de andere Congolese etnische groepen aanwezig in Nederland.
Opvallend veel vrouwen in de Congolese diaspora zijn vrijgezel of alleenstaande moeder, en dat terwijl ongetrouwd zijn gezien wordt als een mislukking. Een verklaring hiervoor is dat veel vrouwen in de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw in Congo een positie hadden veroverd die het hen permitteerde om hun reis naar Europa te betalen. Door te migreren toen de situatie in Kinshasa verslechterde, hoopten ze een economisch beter bestaan op te bouwen. Deze zelfstandige migratie van vrouwen wijkt af van het traditionele migratiepatroon van vrouwen waarbij zij zich slechts in het kader van familiale netwerken verplaatsen.
De lage status die een alleenstaande vrouw in Kinshasa heeft, heeft zij ook binnen de Congolese diaspora in Europa. Door deze lage status wordt zij niet snel ten huwelijk gevraagd. Mannen vragen liever hun familie om in het vaderland een vrouw voor hen te zoeken. Een ander kenmerk van de Congolese diaspora is dat de vrouwen op economisch vlak erg actief zijn.
Terwijl mannen door discriminatie, administratieve belemmeringen of kleinering niet aan banen op hun niveau komen, zijn vrouwen, net als in Kinshasa, actief in de informele sector. Als naaister, kapster of handelaarster weten zij naast hun uitkering wat extra geld te verdienen.
