Freya (Freja) the Scandinavian Goddess of Love, Beauty and War

Freya is the patroness of Witches and both the witches and the form of magic they practiced was named Seidr.

Freya / Freja the Goddess of Beauty

Legend has that only females could learn and practice Seidrand the God Odin was dressed or even changed to a woman to learn this way of magic. Seidr is described as a shamanicform of magic and the main practices include spellcasting by chanting, contacting spirits and the dead, divination and seeing in the future. Entering in a trance phase it is said that they transferred the strength of the enemies in their own warriors. Finally, Freya has a deep love and affiliation with the fairies.

Freya apart from beauty was also famous for her ferocious skills in combat. In that form, she is known as Valfreya.

The legend says that half of the heroes stayed in Folkvang while the other half was staying with Odin in Valhalla. Valfreya was invoked to protect the warriors in battle and to heal them from fatal wounds. Therefore, this aspect of the Goddess can be summoned when you want protection, aid in fighting evil and to heal your loved ones. Freya is a caring Goddess and will gladly assist you in your cause especially if your heart is true and you have a righteous cause.

Freya: The Value of a Love Goddess

Freya knows well the sorrow that you face when you are away from your loved ones. She is the symbol of courage and persistence and this is why. Nature mourned with her as she wept for the loss of her loved one. Her tears of sorrow that fell on stones transformed into gold and her tears that fell in the sea became amber. Determined to find her loved one she wandered the world and far away she managed to locate him and be by his side again, beneath a flowering myrtle. In order to obtain this treasure, Freya asked the dwarves what they want in return.

Both workshops went well; the Myth Embodiment exercise went particularly well. Summarized, it reads like this:. How odd it is that such a powerful and intelligent goddess would go slumming around with some dwarves for jewelry, you might ask. If that is your understanding of the Brisingamen myth, I can see how you might be confused. So, let me break down my understanding of how this all works out, from my perspective as one of Her priestesses.

Freya loves you all. Which, in my experience, seems to be the majority of the people in the world.

Freya finds the beauty in a given person or situation and sharpens it, heightens it, brings it out for you to see. In my mind, Brisingamen symbolizes the beauty that She finds in the dwarves and brings out from the darkness into the light. In the myth, when Freya visits the dwarves, she is asked to give each of them a night with her in exchange for the most beautiful piece of jewelry—a piece of jewelry fit for the most beautiful goddess in the world.

The usual crass jokes aside, think about what could happen there. What does each dwarf do with the night he has with Freya? Do they have sex?

Does She teach them? Does she heal them? Does She give these master craftsmen the gift of creative inspiration? All of the above? For all we know, they could have talked dwarven politics all night.

To each their own. My personal opinion is that while each individual dwarf does gets whatever they wish from Her, they ALL come away knowing that they are valuable.

So, let me break down my understanding of how this all works out, from my perspective as one of Her priestesses. In verse, after Loki has flyted with the goddess Frigg , Freyja interjects, telling Loki that he is insane for dredging up his terrible deeds, and that Frigg knows the fate of everyone , though she does not tell it. Freyja offered to buy the collar from them with silver and gold and other items of value. Freyja plays a part in the events leading to the birth of Sleipnir , the eight-legged horse. Comparative Studies in History of Religions:

Even those who might initially try to degrade Her or devalue Her gift will find themselves transformed through their experience in this way. What they want is Freya Herself. She is the gift. She is love, beauty, and passion. Apparently, the gifts She has to offer are not so frivolous after all.
