    In English, the word puppy has a very different emotional resonance than young dog. A person might see a "young dog" and notice how how handsome it is, while a person would see a "puppy" and his heart would melt. There is no formal difference between the two terms. A puppy and a young dog are the same thing, but "puppy" is the emotional word.

    On the other hand, one would use "puppy" when referring to a very young dog, perhaps two days old, whereas one would normally begin to use the phrase "young dog" as well when the puppy is older than a month or so. But someone would still use the word puppy even for a six-month-old d, or even older.

    The context will tell, and in your example, it cannot be mistaken for "It eats a dog" because "dog" would be in the accusative case direct object - one that directly receives the doing of the verb and thus be "einen Hund" instead of "ein Hund".     Maybe with klein it sounds more adorable. Maybe the native German speakers will comment more! Leute, die selber Hunde besitzen, verwenden "Welpe" eher als Leute, die kleine Hunde bewundern. Vielleicht meldet sich noch wer aus D? Die anderen Umschreibungen sehe ich genauso.

    Suggestions puppy - Hundejunges Comment For me "puppy" is the typical word for a young dog; it's not the word used by dog breeders whelp nor is it a word used only by kids or only when an adult is trying to be cutesy. Puppy-dog is babytalk and I wouldn't use that unless I was talking to a young child, maybe not even then.
