Store and organize Bins and crates are your friends. Create a few labels for out-of-season but still useful items you will store away, such as winter gear or holiday decorations. Also, designate a specific area in your closet or in a shelving unit where you ll store things away. This will be home to things you don t need to reach for until winter comes back around. This will also be the first space you hit during your next round of cleaning. Not too bad, right? Get organized, make a plan and get going. The process of bringing order to your home and welcoming a change in the season is its own celebration.

Too many people try to quit on their own and fall back into cigarettes through habit and addiction. But help is available to make the resolution to quit a long-term, life-changing event.

Insurance carriers and government offer many types of support from counseling and information to prescriptions to reduce dependency. Of course, there are many well-known reasons to give up cigarettes for good. Smoking has been linked to heart disease, lung disease, stroke and cancer, and less seriously to bad breath, body odor and early wrinkles. The American Cancer Society says half of all people who continue to smoke will die of a smokingrelated illness.

Most people understand the health risks, but maybe not the expense. The American Cancer Society says smoking adds billions of dollars to health care costs and that cigarette smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in the United States. The immediate costs are expensive, too. Fortunately, there are more options for quitters than ever and many are free or at It s Time to Quit little cost. Most health plans offer help to quit smoking and the New York State Smokers Quitline offers extensive support at QUIT or by visiting Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs known and is the most common addiction in the country.

But it is also well understood. Working with doctors and wellness programs, quitters may be eligible for nicotine patches, nicotine gum or nicotine lozenges to help control withdrawal symptoms. Many health plans also offer prescription medications to ease withdrawal symptoms and the urge to smoke. Some people believe e-cigarettes can help, but the U. Food and Drug Administration has not approved them as a safe and effective method to help smokers quit. Giving up cigarettes is not easy, but the improvements to your health are immediate and long lasting.

Many people who quit smoking are surprised by how good they feel. The New York City Department of Health says within 20 minutes of quitting, a smoker s heart rate and blood pressure drop to a more normal level. In 12 hours, carbon monoxide level in the blood drops to normal. In a couple of weeks, the former smoker s risk of heart attack begins to drop, blood circulation improves and the lungs begin to work better. By one year, the risk of heart disease is cut in half. Long term, the former smoker s risk of developing diabetes and high blood pressure reduces the longer they are away from tobacco.

They were the pioneers of the borough, said Lenny Caro, President of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce, of the first settlers. They came in from Ireland and built these houses long before other people came here. Sponsored by The Bronx Chamber of Commerce and Verizon Wireless, the event is an annual celebration of the rich history and legacy of the borough s sons and daughters of the Emerald Isle. Irish immigration to the Bronx started in the mid s when the Irish came in large numbers to escape the potato famine.

While Woodlawn presently stands as the primary Irish stronghold in the borough, the Irish were then plentiful throughout the borough, with University Heights, Kingsbridge and Parkchester all boasting large Irish populations. For organizers, the event typified the importance of recognizing the borough s many ethnic and cultural groups. Fue una tarde marcada por el orgullo y por supuesto, el buen humor. The Bronx-born Hauben has been painting in the borough for over 20 years. If you ve not seen his work in the numerous galleries in which the visual artist been exhibited, it is not unlikely that you ve come across him working in the streets.

Hauben works in the trenches. But while Monet would set up his canvas and easel in the rustic scenes of the countryside, Hauben prefers to settle in at the urban intersections, walkways and thoroughfares of the Bronx to draw street scenes and landscapes. Many of his paintings are currently on display at the new library at CUNY s Bronx Community College, which commissioned him to paint 22 pieces. Hauben is a multimedia artist has also worked in glass and bronze.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority MTA commissioned him for fabricated stained glass mosaics that now stand at the Freedman subway stop of the 2 and 5 trains. Hauben celebrates borough s beauty Beauty is to be found everywhere, explains artist Daniel Hauben. The Freedman exhibit will feature pieces not previously shown to the public, as many are too large-scale to fit in smaller gallery spaces.

The Freedman Home, with its high ceilings and expansive floors, provides ample room for Hauben s work. I m so happy for an opportunity to show some of these bigger pieces that have been tucked away in racks for many years, said Hauben. Hauben s work is participatory. Hauben trabaja en las trincheras. La casa Andrew Freedman, de propiedad y dirigida por el Consejo de la Tercera Edad Mid- Bronx, la ha convertido recientemente en un sitio Hauben discute el tema Que es el arte?

Frank Baum, The Wizard of Oz. El grupo da un paseo hacia el este por la calle y Grand Concourse. It allows people to realize that the environment they walk through every day has an aesthetic that is worth validating. In the distance, the faint facial features of the wizard rise over the hill beyond Jerome Avenue. The characters were superimposed upon an earlier streetscape that Hauben created in the mid-nineties. Also visible in the piece is a homeless man lounging on a bench, sporting an unkempt beard. His only possessions are a fistful of paintbrushes. If my career doesn t kick in the next five years, that s me, explained Hauben about his thoughts at the time.

Another large piece, featuring several panels, offers a panoramic view from the balcony of Hauber s Kingsbridge apartment. Hauben captures the warm glow of afternoon as the sun settles on the hilly cityscape. The exhibit features his Bronx panoramas and street scenes, as well as more surreal work he s done in his studio, including The Fifth Crusade, a surreal statement against the war in Iraq, and two paintings made from the rubble of the World Trade Center. It will also feature work he s done for Art and About, his new instructional art show on BronxNet. Two of the paintings were made on The artist at work.

It is a pop-up piece that he did on the spot. Hauben has been painting on-site for much of his career, in many cities around the world. But working in the Bronx, he says, is different. What distinguishes working in the Bronx is that people [here] have no sense of personal space, so they re getting as close as they can, he explained.

I ve even gotten paint on people if I m mixing and then I go to make the next brush stroke and they ve somehow located themselves between me and the painting. Suddenly I m painting on them. Hauben prefers his native borough even to other parts of the city. In Manhattan, it s very different, he said. Everybody [there] is so cool. It s as if they expect you to be painting. In the Bronx, they don t expect you at all.

People have always been very friendly. So friendly, in fact, that even when immersed in other business, they ll stop to help Hauben in pursuit of his work. He recalled a time when he chose to paint an abandoned, red Victorian home in the South Bronx. The building was, in fact, a shooting gallery frequented by drug addicts.

Residents on the block worked with Hauben to make certain some of the subjects coming in and out of the building, many of whom needed assistance staying awake, were included in his composition. He has also proven to be equally adept at accommodating his subjects.

In another instance, as he worked near the Bronx Zoo, all the children nearby sought to be included in the painting. Hauben obliged them, diligently making sure to add each one in, not telling them that he would have to take them out for the sake of the composition. The kinds of interactions I like is when people tell me things about their neighborhood, he said. It triggers people feelings about the location, where they are.

Sometimes you get these great anecdotes from people s memories about the way the Bronx used to be. And often it is a learning experience for passersby, who wonder why anyone would be interested in painting bodegas or fruit vendors under the shadow of the elevated lines. People often say, I pass this spot everyday and never really looked at it. If they see an artist they figure something must be of interest there and they look at it a new way, he said. People identify art with certain subject matters, not something they pass every day. Beauty is to be found everywhere.

Had it passed, New York would have been only the fifth U. The measure had already passed last month in the Democratic-controlled State Assembly. With 32 votes required, the final Senate vote of on Monday represented a narrow margin of defeat along partisan lines and a stinging setback for advocates. It hit particularly close to home for many in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx who had hoped to see the Dream Act become a reality.

Once again, the doors to higher education have been barred. I am deeply disappointed in my colleagues who do not view the empowerment of young people as good public policy, said State Senator Adriano Espaillat, himself an immigrant from the Dominican Republic. But those opposed to the measure have argued that the focus should be on expanding resources for documented students and their families. Many legal families are struggling with the high cost of college education, said Republican Senator Mark J.

Co-Senate Leader Jeff Klein brought the vote to the floor. I am deeply disappointed, said State Senator Adriano Espaillat. You re either standing up for these students to get their shot, or standing in the way, said Sen.

Klein in his remarks on the floor. Andrade gave voice to the concerns of those who felt that the vote had been rushed before its passage was secured. Andrew Cuomo too has come under fire for not more actively supporting the bill, despite calling it a priority. He could have done more, that s for sure, said Andrade. Klein spokesperson Anna Durrett insisted that the frustration was shared.

Klein and his colleagues in the IDC have long supported the Dream Act because they believe every high school graduate should have access to an affordable college education, she wrote in a statement. While our members are disappointed with the outcome, we believe this was an important vote to have.

She noted that Monday s vote made clear who supported the bill and who did not. We now know where everyone in the Senate stands on Dream Act, including two Senate Democrats who effectively blocked the Dream Act from passing. They have squandered an important investment in young people who can boost New York s economy, support our communities, and serve as our State s future leaders. But advocates say they will not be deterred.

When it comes to education, it s not a handout, it s an investment, argued Andrade, who will graduate from Lehman this year, and hopes to further his education and work within the medical field.
