The book is divided into sections which describe different aspects of Coleridge's and Wordsworth's historical contexts: It is a collection of thoughts and anecdotes about the poets' lives: I found the section on education and childhood particularly interest "Unruly Times" is not a book intended for an academic audience: I found the section on education and childhood particularly interesting, and after glancing through the section on landscape I have grown convinced that I should at least have a look at Dorothy Wordsworth's diaries.

Byatt's study is not a particularly great source on the intricacies of the relationship between Wordsworth and Coleridge which I had hoped it would be , but her work does serve as an inspiration to reach for the original poems and letters. Sep 22, Francesca rated it it was amazing. Byatt's mastery with words is here only equaled by her knowledge of Wordsworth, Coleridge, their minds, and the ideals that infused the Romantic period.

The lakes themselves and the landscape in which they stretch reminds me of the finger-lake region of New York, though on the bigger island of North America the lakes seem appropriately more spread out and distant from each other. Incidentally it was nice to fly over our lakes on the way back from theirs!

Damp it is, or at least was on the days I visited July , Jan 03, Suzanne rated it liked it. This book is an informative and sensitive placing of Wordsworth and Coleridge in their times. In the process it illuminates certain tendencies and trends of the period such as the consideration of the picturesque and sheds light on linkages between painting and literature. The different sections provide a rich background which helps to situate the two poets and many of their friends and acquaintances and deepen understanding of their work.

Ritter realized that those who played baseball in the early years of the 20th century were now old men, and he resolved to interview as many of them as he could in order to record their memories.

Ritter travelled 75, miles to interview his subjects, sitting for hours listening to them tell their tales into his tape recorder. The book retells their stories in the first-person, as they were told to Ritter.

The interviews were made between and The book was published in September , following four years of research, interviews and preparation. Ritter presented royalties to the 22 men in the original book and their estates, and continued to write them checks into the mids. Every player in the book, along with his wife, has since died.

A vinyl album containing some of the actual recordings of the interviews was released in the s. More recently, with the popularity of books-on-tape, longer versions of the recordings have been released on audiocassette and CD. Crawford, Greenberg, Roush and Waner were already members of the Baseball Hall of Fame at the time of the book's publishing.

Coveleski, Goslin, Hooper and Marquard were elected after the book was published, and Goslin and Marquard directly credited Ritter's book. Toporcer, who died in , was the last survivor among the interviewees. As part of Ritter's research, he interviewed many ballplayers, baseball executives, and writers besides those who have chapters in his book. A documentary film for The Glory of Their Times was produced in by Ritter and Bud Greenspan , showing much of the still photography used in the book, along with vintage film footage and recordings from the audio tapes Ritter used in researching the book.
