The main character of the story is a very talented and gifted cockroach-yes a cockroach- whose journey to find beauty, love, and self-acceptance begins with finding a shiny coin. This book is beautifully illustrated, the drawings are rich in color and depicts a detailed portrait of a very real town in Puerto Rico.

The center theme of this book authentically teaches any child or adult that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, to look beyond the surface of the skin and embrace the values, gifts, talents and qualities that make individuals unique. As I read this book to my daughter, it prompted wholehearted conversations about self-esteem. I am happy that this charming story is part of my library.

I received this book from a giveaway on goodreads. All thoughts on the book are my own. This children's book is a charming tale of a cockroach named Martina and her adventures after finding a coin while she was doing a chore in her yard. I read this book with my 3 year old niece and she really enjoyed it and was thrilled when I gave it to her to add to her collection of story books. I especially like the inclusion of Spanish words and the English translation of those words in the glossary at the end of the book. The artwork in the book is great and has a folk-artist touch to it.

This book would be a great gift for any little girl, although a boy might enjoy it just as much! Oct 09, Kelly Willcoxbrackeen rated it really liked it. Very cute children's book that comes with a lesson in the Spanish languange. I would have preferred that my grandchild learned more important Spanish words first but I thought learning to look up vocabulary not understood was a very important lesson.

I loved that the lack of bathroom humor, the lesson of loving yourself and waiting for others to love you for who you are. The bug dating animals kind of creeped me out but I lack the imagination of a child. I would highly recommend this book for ot Very cute children's book that comes with a lesson in the Spanish languange. I would highly recommend this book for other parents and grandparents. Don't forget to read to the kids!!!

The best compliment I can give this book is from my 2 year old who said "more book" when we were finished. We made her an avid reader, and a dancer, and a singer of bomba y plena. I like this book. I am happy that this charming story is part of my library. The illustrations compliment the story set In a beautiful village in Puerto Rico where the author grew up. The main character is Martina, a cockroach. I love that the main character is a cockroach and of all the critters the only one who sees her true beauty is a rat.

Martina is a talented cockroach and is friendly with the other animals, who are also professionals and want to marry her. Finally, she finds someone, Miguel, the mouse who appreciates her for her and not her looks. The illustrations by Alba Escayo compliment the story text, which blends English and Spanish quite nicely. Although the main character is female the theme crosses gender lines and teaches everyone to accept who they are and to look beyond the external appearances of people. A worthy read and a must have for any young readers library. Kudos to first time author Yadhira Gonzalez Taylor! Oct 11, Cherity rated it it was amazing. It is a great children's book that gives some glimpse of Puerto-Rico's culture. I liked the way Spanish and local words were incorporated in the text. The glossary was also nice so, although, I'm not familiar with some of the words, I was able to look for their meaning.

I also liked the pictures, they're very colorful like the Puerto-Rico itself, I would imagine , with lots of details.

By pure coincidence, what began as an afternoon project with my five-year-old became a retelling of my very favorite Caribbean folktale, La Cucarachita Martina y el Raton Perez. One day, my husband asked me if there were any Puerto Rican folktales I could share with her, and immediately la cucarachita Martina came to mind. I frequently told my daughter the original version, or at least what I remembered of it, that my grandmother recited to me when I was growing up in rural Caguas, Puerto Rico.

Of course, I told her it was, but explained that Martina was very busy and could not have visitors. After telling the story many times, we sat and rewrote it, adding all sorts of ideas that popped into our heads. We made Martina a cellist because my daughter is a cellist.

We made her an avid reader, and a dancer, and a singer of bomba y plena. Many full moons ago, in an enchanted island in a tiny village called Borinquen, a wonderful and beautiful cellist named Martina finds a shiny coin while she is sweeping.
