I'm not saying that there are any bad stories here, that is not the case at all but my favourite was Dress-tease , which is a follow on from Damage Control so the characters had already been drawn and the relationships fully developed. One standalone short story that really worked for me was the rather unusual "Christmas Road Trip", I don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling it for others but it's not at all what I expected from Jae and it's wonderful. I remember reading an article by Jeffrey Deaver many years ago about the difference between short stories and novels being that in a novel you have your readers emotional investment for a prolonged period of time, so as as author you have a duty to take care of your readers. However, in a short story there isn't the same emotional investment in the characters, so he was free to do whatever he wanted, no matter how unexpected.

I think there's an element of that at play here. While I had already read a few of these stories in other collections or online, I'm glad I picked up this book, the new pieces are well worth it and re-reading Dress Tease was a great pleasure. Happily Ever After by Jae is a collection of previously published short stories. All of these stories have been published in either stand alones or in other collections of shorts. Beyond that, some subgenres of lesbian romance are doing better than others, and some tropes are more sought-after than others. Contemporary romance is the largest subgenre and I bet you all knew that. But even here, within that subgenre of lesbian romance, some tropes and settings are more successful than others. Lesbian medical romances fly off the shelves. You can get away with describing not a lot of medical stuff.

But whatever you describe and show has to be accurate. And we have the books to prove this theory. Ylva bestsellers in this subgenre of lesbian romance are: Falling Hard by Jae , L. Another trope that readers love are families, aka two women and at least one kid. Several years ago you had a hard time finding even one lesbian romance with that trope; nowadays you see it more and more often. There is nothing more annoying than a six-year-old acting—and talking—like a seventeen-year-old and vice versa.

Two Ylva bestsellers that prove having kids in lesbian fiction are winners are: Last but not least, lesbian romcoms are so popular right now. It seems that the more real life aka politics sucks all the energy out of everyone, the more people are looking for a funny read. Be it fake marriage, enemies to lovers, or chick lit, all of those tropes are well loved by readers who want some escapism.
