Published in , Mission Mongolia tells the story of two retired BBC journalists who drove a second-hand Nissan van from England to Mongolia for charity. The 8, mile journey covered many countries, seedy hotels and shakedowns. In fact, it comes across very much like an old Top Gear tv prog but without the contrived nature of the various situations that result.

Very funny, and very informative, just like all good travel books ought to be. Could have been better given the rigorous and long overland trip just waiting for better descriptions of the landscape and the travel conditions.

Back then, I wanted to go discover more dinosaur eggs in the Gobi Desert, but as I grew up and realized the unlikeliness of that, I just kept the wish to see that country.

After reading this wonderful book, I've satisfied myself with their experiences and will cross it off my list. The author is undoubtedly familiar to Brits, but I don't know anything about him except that he's very very funny, and surely an inte What a wonderful, fun book! The author is undoubtedly familiar to Brits, but I don't know anything about him except that he's very very funny, and surely an interesting travel companion. As he writes himself, he's a bit of a slob, and an optimist. His traveling partner is his opposite, in essential ways -- very neat and careful, skilled er mechanically, and more of a realist.

I thoroughly enjoyed their trip, the good and the difficult, and just wish there had been a bit more at the end. After making it 8, miles with them, the ending was a bit quick.

But that was my only complaint -- a kind of "hey, I'm not ready to say goodbye to you yet! If you're interested in Mongolia, or big travel trips, or just looking for something funny and interesting to read, this will cover you. Worth a read if you see it around. Funny and interesting - great read if you want a break from Serious Reading. Those looking for insight into Mongolian culture specifically might feel a bit disappointed as it's the story of the duo's adventures in several countries.
