What the mask does is just release the wearer's inhibitions, so whatever their true nature is is what's shown, no boundaries whatsoever. Behind the Mask", The Mask: However, Kathy decides to throw caution to the wind and surrenders after deciding neither one of them are going to die and soon some random bystander will just come across the Mask anyway and tosses it to Walter, but he seems to have no interest in it. From the early comics were Walter, still Pretorius' Henchman, and a Lieutenant Kellaway more like his original counterpart than as he was depicted in film. The young museum collector does not really believe the professor's story and puts the mask back in a box as they head for the city - presumably Gotham City.

Kellaway's fat jokes towards his boss is a tiresome shtick that gets beaten to death and beyond. But there's still something to be admired by a series that consistently goes for broke, and doesn't hold anything back because it's a cash cow. The Omnibus is the perfect way to get an overview of a deeply unusual work from a time where they weren't accessible.

Jul 29, Jeremy Paskoff rated it really liked it Shelves: In visiting the shops and browsing online, I'd see this title everywhere, but never happened to give it a glance. It was only until earlier this year that someone had recommended it to me, and I was not disappointed. The stories have that 90's era style of comics to them, being impressively illustrated by Doug Mahnke, and the writing is stellar.

What starts as a more sinister characterization of "Big Head" in the noir-esque first story transitions well into a crime comedy series full of slapstick and some top-notch banter between the supporting characters. By the time we arrive at "The Mask Strikes Back," you'll wonder who will be wearing the mask next, and how their version of Big Head will act. Each story is a fun read full of dark comedy and subtle jabs at society. Overall a great read, and I would highly recommend.

If you see this book at the comic store, don't do what I did and just pick it up. Nov 01, Mike rated it liked it Shelves: Wacky cartoon hijinx that blends interestingly with a lot of violence. If nothing else, a nice palette cleansing romp if you normally read heavier stuff, and interesting to see how toned down the movie was in comparison.

Feb 05, Quinton Baran rated it liked it. I found this to be an enjoyable book, but quite different from the character in the movie, which I have enjoyed for years. Sure, there is a semblance of similarity in the actions and such of the mask in both the book and the movie, but it was a bit of a shock to see the differences too. Aug 24, Al Capwned rated it did not like it Shelves: I get the point about the change of personality when wearing the mask but most part of it is repetitive and the final chapter, which is a bit different, is even worse. This was a very good story! Like many who saw the original film, I had no idea it was based off a comic series. It was about a decade later I learned that the original source was a rather violent series, but only recently did I decide to finally sit on the couch and read it. And then it goes downhill again, but then back up later. It's a mixed bag, to say the least. I won't give any spoilers, bu Like many who saw the original film, I had no idea it was based off a comic series.

I won't give any spoilers, but I will say that Stanley Ipkiss yes, he's a real character here in the comics isn't the only one to wear the mask for a long period of time. But he's not the most interesting character in the comics. There's one figure whom I shall remain nameless that really soars with the mask, and I think they should've focused more on his time with it.

To me, it was the golden part of this first omnibus, and should be the main plot line if Netflix ever decides to make it into a show. They would do well with it if they stuck to the original source; showing their track record, I think they'd do a fine job. The film takes a mix of all Mask wearers up to its release, but makes the character seem too goofy than he is.

Don't get me wrong: What the mask does is just release the wearer's inhibitions, so whatever their true nature is is what's shown, no boundaries whatsoever. Oftentimes they can come to their base desires through comical means, but most of the time it's brutal. I think the creators spent too much effort tossing the mask through different users. Some of their schemes seemed forced, whereas with others it seemed more natural, and it was unfortunate that we didn't get to see them with it for too long.

For the most part, the art style is great. Very detailed for hand-drawn early '90s. And times it got a bit lazy and sloppy, but overall it was top notch. A very good read, even if bumpy at times. Sep 05, C. Varn rated it really liked it. Life of Pi Select category Add custom category.
