The E-learning and Social Networking Handbook

The emphasis being placed by HEIs to embed new technologies within the curriculum and the development of alternative delivery models: This text provides a platform for those wishing to use and understand these new technologies exploring how they can remain student centred within their design and delivery. Mason and Rennie provide an insightful account of the context that different media palettes can be used ensuring that the reader understands that to engage with learners, VLEs and e-learning technologies should not just be a repository of information.

They provide theoretical support to good teaching practice that informs which application could be used together with aspects that may be problematic.

The benefit in particular of these discussions relate to the opportunity it provides the reader in considering which tool may be most effective in their teaching practice in relation to the availability of e-learning technology at different institutions. With each tool considered, the authors provide a commentary on the challenges that course designers face when seeking engaging activities for their learners, together with strengths and potential difficulties that may arise, summarising each tool with guidance on practical tips to enable effective practice. The authors conclude the book with discussion and guidance relating to constraints that hamper course design in relation to embedding e-learning and social networking technologies in Higher Education.

Here the book offers an opportunity to rethink how courses should be assessed, transferring some power or learning from the educator to the learner. There is no doubt the existing requirements for quality assurance will impact upon selected techniques for assessment, however with careful consideration, this book suggests, alternatives approaches may become evident. Overall this is a very insightful, well written and useful text that could be of benefit for those interested in further enhancing their courses.
