Split (The Eternal War (Shorts) Book 1)

Combat focuses on a simple targeting system, in which players must lock-on to an enemy in order to attack it, but can focus on striking an enemy directly or attacking one of its limbs and remove it, thus hindering an enemy; decapitating the heads on most enemies effectively blinds them.

While playing as characters in settings during pre-industrial eras, combat relies mainly on close-combat weapons such as swords. More modern era characters have access to firearms, including pistols and shotguns. A series of brief tutorials are provided during the early chapters, aimed at explaining the various aspects of the game, including two distinct systems — a spell-casting system referred to as Magick, and the Sanity Meter. After the player initially searches the game's main hub, the Roivas Family estate, for a book called the Tome of Eternal Darkness , and reads it, the main narrative of the game's story switches between two phases — the main phase focuses on a series of chapters, in which players take control of a character within each chapter, each of whom must complete a specific task in order to complete the chapter and continue the story; the other phase acts as an intermission between chapters, in which the player controls the game's main protagonist and explore the hub for a page for the Tome, in order to begin the next chapter.

The game features twelve playable characters, split between four distinct locations in different periods of time, each of whom are different in terms of the game's three main parameters — health, sanity, and magick — and have access to a small selection of weapons that they can use in combat, though what they can use is determined by the period of time they are in. The game features multiple paths that can be taken, the choice of which to take occurring towards the end of the first chapter, and involves choosing one of three artifacts.

The choice that is made at this juncture in the game, not only determines which of the game's three other antagonists are aligned to the story, but also affects the difficulty of the game and what enemies they face in subsequent chapters and later intermission periods. After the game is completed down one path, it becomes unavailable in future playthroughs, until the player completes all three paths. Magick can be used by all characters with the exception of those in the first two chapters , and consists of spells that can be used to damage opponents, protect characters and heal them, and be used to solve certain puzzles; with the player able to assign five spells or up to five different variations of the same spell for quick-use during the game.

Spells consist of two components which the player must acquire in order to make progress in the game — Runes similar in appearance to glyphs or sigilia , that are the components of spells; and a Circle of Power, of which there are three types available, allowing players to cast spells using three, five, or seven runes — both of which are stored in the Tome of Eternal Darkness and can be used in subsequent chapters and intermission periods. Each character must possess the Tome to use magick, with each spell costing a certain amount of magick power depending on the strength it is being cast at, with magick power recharging over time, though spell casting can be interrupted if the character takes damage.

The game features a list of spells that can be used, some of which are enhanced versions with greater strength to them. All require the player to combine a series of Runes together in order to cast them, which are divided between three types — alignment runes based on the game's ancients, that fuel a spell; verb effect runes, that denote the action of the spell; and noun target runes, which denote what is effected by the spell, be it the character, an area or an enemy — though such runes cannot be used, regardless of how they were acquired, until the player also finds a Tablet that can translate their use.

Although players need a spell scroll to know what effects a combination of Runes will have, such scrolls are not necessary. All spells are fundamentally affected by what alignment rune is used to power them, of which the game incorporates four types — Red, Green, Blue, and Purple. Three of them are acquired over the course of the game, the chronological order of their acquirement determined by the player's choice of path for their playthrough, and each affect spells on a specific parameter; in terms of powering spells that damage enemies, they operate on a rock, paper, scissors principle of gameplay.

The fourth, purple, is not essential, but has greater power than the other three, though it cannot be used to cast certain spells. The other distinctive gameplay aspect comes from "Sanity Effects", the game's standout concept that Nintendo patented. As the bar becomes low, subtle changes to the environment and random, unusual events begin to occur, which reflect the character's slackening grip on reality. While minor effects include a skewed camera angle, heads of statues following the character, and unsettling noises, stronger effects include bleeding on walls and ceilings, entering a room that is unrealistic before finding that the character never left the previous room, the character suddenly dying, and fourth wall breaking effect such as "To Be Continued" promotions for a "sequel", and simulated errors and anomalies of the TV or GameCube; while the latter does not affect gameplay, they can be misconstrued by the player as being actual technical malfunctions.

When the bar is completely empty, further damage to Sanity effectively damages health. In order to combat this, players can recover lost Sanity, either by using Green-aligned restorative spells, or by performing a finishing move on an enemy; this can be done once an enemy has taken enough damage and collapses onto the ground, but must be done before their body disappears. The story of Eternal Darkness takes place over four principal locations which the game skips back and forth between. The chapters found in the game are not discovered in chronological order.

Instead, to make the narrative more dramatic, each chapter jumps around the timeline of the plot. The events within chapters are laid out below, but unlike the order as they are in the game, they are laid out in chronological order, with the exception of the prologue still being first.

Two weeks after returning, with the local police having gotten nowhere with the murder, Alex decides to investigate the mansion for clues, and stumbles upon a secret room containing, among other odd items, a book bound with human skin and bone called the Tome of Eternal Darkness.

Starship Eternal

Deciding to read it, she finds it containing accounts of various people in the past, beginning with the story of Pious Augustus. Lured away from his men by mysterious voices, Pious found himself venturing into an underground temple complex called the Forbidden City, and coming across three artifacts, each possessing the essence of a powerful godlike being referred to as "Ancients".

Upon attempting to touch one of the artifacts, Pious finds himself corrupted by its power, becoming an undead warlock with great power, whereupon he pledges his allegiance to the artifact's Ancient and begins working on summoning them into the universe. Seeking to learn more, Alexandra searches the mansion for more pages from the Tome, and learns of how several individuals came into contact with the Tome, while dealing with Pious or his servants.

Upon finding it to be an artifact that Pious left behind, he is visited by the spirit of Chandra, who died after he left, and convinces him to sacrifice himself in order to guard it from dark forces. A Frankish messenger named Anthony, who stumbles upon the plot after being struck by a corrosive magick spell meant for the emperor, travels to a small monastery in Amiens, France in order to warn him of the danger to his life. Despite Anthony's best efforts, he arrives too late to save him, and dies from the spell he was afflicted with. A young Khmer slave girl, named Ellia, finds herself trapped within the temple at the same time and attempts to find another way out.

While doing so, she encounters Mantorok beneath the temple and is approached by one of his servants, who entrusts her with the task of protecting an artifact, containing his essence, within her body. Shortly after receiving this, Pious confronts her and questions her over the essence's location, but unable to get answers from her, promptly kills her with magick. Roberto Bianchi, a Venetian architect travelling through the region, is captured by Pious' men and forced to survey the pillar's foundations within the City.

While conducting his work, he encounters the spirit of Karim, who entrusts him with the artifact in his possession. Shortly after Roberto completes his survey, Pious has him thrown into the Pillar with the other workers and buried alive. A Franciscan friar named Paul Luther, visiting the region to view a holy relic at the cathedral, finds himself accused of murdering a fellow friar by the local Inquisition.

Attempting to clear his name, he discovers that the cathedral's relic doesn't exist, and encounters the Guardian, which promptly kills him after Pious, masquerading as the local Inquisition's leader, deems him an issue. Maximillian Roivas, a colonial ancestor of Alex and her grandfather, inherits his father's mansion in Rhode Island and decides to investigate its secrets. Upon finding the mansion's secret room and acquiring the Tome, monsters suddenly appear, some of whom possess his servants.

Seeking their source, he soon finds a large cavern beneath the mansion, containing an ancient city within called Ehn'gha. After barely surviving a fight against a creature guarding the city's entrance, he returns to the surface to get help, only to be considered delirious. Three months later, Maxmillian is declared insane after murdering four of his servants, and is sent to an asylum for the rest of his life.

Peter Jacob, a field reporter making accounts about the atrocities of war within the cathedral, notes that patients have been disappearing of late, and decides to investigate when monsters suddenly appear during a blackout and begin attacking everyone. Venturing into the catacombs, he finds himself encountering the Black Guardian and defeats it, recovering the artifact it was guarding. Finding his way underground, Edward discovers the city incorporates magick machinery, and so uses it to greatly damage the city with a powerful destructive spell. A Historical Horror Book 1 Book.

I thought the Reverand's character was one of the most interesting of all, while a hunter, Cheryl doesn't completely trust him in the beginning, but soon realizes he might be one of her greatest allies. This book never has a down time, it is totally action packed from page one. The authors writing skills draw you into the world of the vampire hunter, painting such vivid descriptions that you feel like you are part of the story.

Fans of paranormal fiction are going enjoy this book.

I only hope that this is only the beginning for Cheryl and we see a new book from Mr. Mar 30, OpenBookSociety. Review brought to you by guest reviewer Jennifer Jensen year-old Cheryl Erickson is a Vampire Hunter with some serious attitude. After Cheryl becomes a suspect in a homicide, she teams up with a secretive division of the FBI that has had their eye on her for quite some time.

I am a sucker for vampire series, especially with strong female heroines like Cheryl. I felt the explanations were really well drawn out, and they kept me wanting more. I loved the whole concept of this book and would definitely purchase his writing in the future. Additionally, there were some really great plot twists that I never saw coming. Though I enjoyed it, there were still a few things that annoyed me about Cheryl and about the opening scenes in the book. When the book first starts, Cheryl already knows about the drug and what it does.

I would have really like some more build up, but overall this was a surprisingly good read. Cheryl is a vampire and demon hunter.

Things start to go very wrong when a new drug comes into town. When her trainer, known as Cho, appears to see her, it only could be a good thing, right? Westendarp created a story full of action, full of paranormal and full of originality.

I was tired of the same things about vampires and hunters, but Westendarp gave me fresh air. Cheryl is a wonderful character, a person you would love to know. Virgil, her best friend since Kindgarden, is a friend you would like to have. Full of mysteries, full of turn arounds and cliffhangers, the book left me breathless. You never know what can happen next, and you are surprised all the time. It was a wonderful book to read after so much time without a paranormal one. Made me remember why I really love the genre. I would, however, do a revision again in the story.

Cheryl is a Hunter with a great reputation and hard ass attitude. When a new drug was circulated in her territory she goes on a hunt to learn about the harmful drug that doesn't only affect humans but makes them more dangerous than vampires. Spiral X was surprisingly good and a fast read. I have read a lot of female heroines or female vampire hunters but Cheryl's character felt fresh.

She i Cheryl is a Hunter with a great reputation and hard ass attitude. She is talented, respected, hard core, yet knows right from wrong but that doesn't stop her from doing something she thinks can get the job done. Virgil, the geek best friend, is a great companion to Cheryl. I love the all-in-one sidekick-best friend-family effect that Virgil has on Cheryl. The Reverend was a shock to me. I wasn't expecting his character though. The additional characters are promising and well developed. I loved how Westendarp wrote Spiral X.

It was not the typical vampire hunter novel that I always read. A fresh read with the numerous vampire novels today.

The book is a must read! I would like to know if Westendarp is thinking of creating a series for this book. If that will be the case, then count me as one of the number of fans that the book will surely garner. A writer to watch out for who has a big heart. Aug 11, Lex Write rated it it was amazing.

I absolutely loved this book. It was action packed and I was totally blown away by how focused I became on the plot. I actually had to read it twice because the first time I read it, I practically devoured it while trying to figure out what happens next, and of course, I completely forgot to take notes so I could write a good review. I love Cheryl, she is such a great strong female character. She totally kicks butt. A lot of times in paranormal books, the female character keeps getting put into s I absolutely loved this book. A lot of times in paranormal books, the female character keeps getting put into situations where she needs to be rescued by some hunky supernatural guy, and ends up playing the damsel in distress rather than the butt kicking vamp hunter that was promised.

While I do love those books too, it is just nice to see a crazy cool female main character. I will say that she does end up needing to be rescued but throughout the ordeal she stays strong and holds her own. I liked all of the plot twists and the fact that it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Westendarp does a really good job on all of the characters, not just Cheryl, they all have great multi-faceted personalities and are totally believable. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves strong female character, action and adventure, paranormal and cop stories.

Cheryl Erikson is a Vampire Hunter and is taken on a wild ride when a vicious new drug called Plast hits the streets in her territory. This drug makes Vampires even harder to kill and makes the Humans taking the drug become deranged animals. X marks the spot as Cheryl finds her self trying to escape death and take down a Vampire named Arthur. Can she pull through when everyone is counting on her to save the day? I really have a hard time with stories that are told first person and this book pulled it off very well. At first I wasn't connected with the Characters but the storyline really hooked me and before I knew it I was invested in each and every Character.

When I had to put this book down I found myself thinking about each of them almost obsessively. I enjoyed this book. There was no romance, no over done sex scenes. This was a true book with plots, twists and turns that the reader doesn't expect. Right up my alley! This was a paranormal book right up there with the best of them but done differently. Cheryl, the main character, is fighting against Vampires who are still not known by most of the human population.

She and a few of her friends are clued in to the secretive world and work together to keep the humans safe. If you like the Anita Blake series you'll want to pick this one up! Spiral X is not your typical vampire story. I was thrilled to dive into a book where the vampires weren't civilized. This book was very fast paced and Cheryl felt like a more grown up, ass kicking Buffy, with a touch of the characters from Demons.

She's a hunter, but I kept thinking, she's smiting those vamps! She was totally bad ass. There's no other way to describe her and so are most Spiral X is not your typical vampire story.

There's no other way to describe her and so are most of her friends. And that cast of characters is really interesting, from Virgil, her homosexual BFF, Tank, a fellow hunter, to the crooks and teachers she's had throughout the years. Westendarp really creates some "real" characters and though they have some fantastic abilities, he keeps the humanity there too. It was great to see a character like Cheryl, be able to kick butt and still be heartbroken over the loss of her "uncle" Don. People will like Cheryl because she's so strong and as you learn more about her, you marvel at how she can be that way at Westendarp also offers a lot of twists and turns as Cheryl seeks to uncover the source of the drug Plast, while ridding her turf of any vamps and demons that come her way.

It really makes for a gripping read. He also offers an interesting take on the vampire legend. Here's hoping he decides to continue with Cheryl's character in the future. I think there could be a lot of interesting stories that could wrap around her character. Ok guys I was ecstatic to be asked to review this book. I love almost anything paranormal and was not disappointed with this book.

From the start I was sucked in, for one reason the main character is female. I wanna be like Cheryl when I grow up! This is not your typical vampire, hunter book. With it's twists and turns and OMG no way's it keeps you on the edge of your seat reading as fast as you can to find out what happens next. Cheryl, Virgil, Tank, Father Harold and Rev are just a few of the characters you will encounter in this book. What I love about this book though is that each character that you encounter has their own part to play and J. Cheryl has a lot to deal with in this book, from fighting evil, vampires to dealing with the losing people that mean a great deal in her life, each twist shapes her into the wonderful character she is.

She makes it through thanks to her circle of support with her best friend Virgil, Tank who is another Hunter that backs her up when needed, Father Harold and even the head of shadow government agency. You think you have it all figured out as you read and then BAM, out of the blue a new twist or turn. And I can't wait for more! I clicked the last page and almost screamed Westendarp has found a life long fan right here. Mar 13, SirenBookReviews rated it really liked it. Spiral X is a very well written story in the vampire hunter genre.

Cheryl is spoiled rich kid that has no need to work, due to an inheritance, and at night she hunts the vampires vigilante style as revenge for the death of her father.

This story is well written and entertaining even in the face of hundreds of other vampire tales. It has some mysteries within it which remain unanswered hinting that a series could be in the future. The characters of Cheryl and her trusty cyber-sidekick Virgil are nicely developed and well supported by the characters of Tank and Father Harold.

Together they make a wonderful vampire hunting team that could, in fact, make a lovely TV series. With tons of action from beginning to end, this is a book that fans of the vampire lore will thrill to consume. For those who know me by know I love my vampire's and so when I had the chance to read this one I eagerly accepted. What I found though was not the typical Vamp story I am used too. For one I admit I haven't read too many female vampire hunters, yes I watched Buffy but haven't read too many not yet anyway. I found I really liked Cheryl, tough and badass while hunting but still has compassion for the humans that find themselves enthralled by the vampires.

I also like the fact she began to question For those who know me by know I love my vampire's and so when I had the chance to read this one I eagerly accepted. I also like the fact she began to question herself and why she was hunting in the first place. As for the vampires, I really liked the way this author took the myth and made it his own.

I hadn't thought there could be any more ways they could be 'born' from. This was only my second urban fantasy I have read and though I miss the 'romance' of vampires can't help it I am sucker for that pun intended and seeing them as evil was a bit hard for me to get used too. Overall I really enjoyed this book, the characters were well written and I just adored Virgil by the way.

The plot ran smooth even after a bit of a slow start but it didn't hinder me, to want to stop reading it. So would I recommend? Yes if you are the type that loves their vampires as the bad guys while the good guys girl are Vampire hunters. Please give this one a read. Good Debut for JJ Westendarp. Spiral X takes the reader back to the time when vampires weren't the good guys.

This is deep, dark and gritty. It is action packed, very well-written and the detail is immense. The main character in this is Cheryl Erikson, who became a Hunter when her father was murdered. She is aided and abetted by her BFF Virgil, cyber-geek extraordinaire. There are twists and turns, mysteries and curve balls in this gritty book which doesn't turn away from the "hero" getting beaten up either. If you like the paranormal genre, like vampire stories but are getting bored with "good" vampires, then I recommend this book. What a roller-coaster of events! What I enjoyed about this novel was the fact that it played in my head like a movie.

The characters were believable, mythology understandable and there were twists and turns around every corner. The Author being male only helped this novel. He made fight scenes and car chasing scenes believable and understandable. How many times have I read a fight scene where you are not sure what is happening and just go through it to see the end result? Too many to mention. But not this one! Definitely a must read if you are tired of paranormal romance and love triangles of which this book has none.

It has a kick-ass heroine that has lost some motivation along the way, which only makes her human.
