Godhunter - a Paranormal RH Romance (The Godhunter Book 1)

Blog Tour: Godhunter Series by Amy Sumida

Maybe it is because of the humor and fun with which Sumida writes the entire story. Maybe it's just that I have a tolerance for that, if everything else in the story works, and I like all the characters. Because, let's face it, I am reading paranormal reverse harem romance here folks! I WANT to be swept away and watch a strong, fun heroine overcome every obstacle eventually and get every guy she wants: That's the whole point of the extreme escapism!

And Sumida has written a ton of great characters with depth and complexity and as many foibles and quirks as they have strengths. It makes it very easy to connect with them and care about what is happening. Even more, the world-building in this series is stellar. Sumida has done a beautiful job of adding the fantastic to our everyday reality in a cohesive, consistent, and believable way. I find the way she has woven myths and gods and stories from so many different cultures together with her story to be fascinating.

And I am so glad there are 22 more books for me to enjoy! In addition to the trigger-warning, there is also a lot of sex in the series, but it is not explicit. Sumida manages to find a way to include it all, with plenty of romantic feels, but without great detail. Each scene employs euphemisms and romantic metaphor to let the reader know what is happening without spelling it all out.

Or she employs fade-to-black implication. But I also love a good redemption story. So I am SO conflicted about Blue. I caught his gaze and the intensity of it scared me. I partially blamed myself for encouraging him with the swan thing -insert sigh here-. Just as long as he didn't turn into a bush-lurking stalker, I'd be fine.

I narrowed my eyes on him in consideration. Maybe I'd better trim the hedges around my yard. I think I am stealing it: There was a bit more sand in my hourglass. This one from Thor to Vervain is a doozy. SUCH a lovely lighthouse metaphor. But I can't help feel it's as much about her power as who she is. Which is kind of a bummer, and a worry for the future of this relationship. Wonder if he really sees her.

You're a lighthouse shining through the darkness, calling it home. One of the boulders actually had a lid which lifted to reveal a toilet. Very ingenious but also very frustrating if you happened to be a person unaccustomed to searching for a toilet inside rocks. In real life, you gotta save yourself and the only happy endings are the ones paid for in massage parlors. Wet or dry it will attach itself to any part of your anatomy it can reach and those cool ocean breezes everyone loves so much? They are in cahoots with the vicious, alien-fungus sand and will happily fling a fine mist of the powdery annoyance all over you while simultaneously lulling you to sleep with its salt-laced caresses.

The beach is evil, I tell you, evil. Jan 20, Stephanie Ferrel rated it did not like it Shelves: It was just immature AF, and this is from someone who reads YA regularly. That aside, though, here were the reasons I tapped out. The whole introduction to how Vervain became the Godhunter isn't explained terribly well. A dude tried to kill her on behalf of a god. She kills the dude and the god.

Then, she decides to rifle through the god's stuff and thus, her new path is chosen. If a female doesn't fall within certain parameters in terms of how she looks is she not a woman? So there was strike two. How has the author not edited that racist shit yet? And it's apparent she knows she can differentiate by simply saying Indian and Native American as she goes on to describe two other gods as Native American.

So this line was a throwaway designed to be clever, I guess, and all it did was convince me to go ahead and close the book and choose to spend my time on other stuff. Kindle Unlimited has too many quality books for me to waste time on bigoted garbage. Jan 20, Kelli rated it did not like it Shelves: Even with curse words and sex included, however even those seemed more like after thoughts, added in later to make it more adult.

I admit I was looking for another Lexi Blake Thief Series, and this one left me needing much more than it was giving. Oct 08, Hollie rated it it was ok Shelves: I'm glad it was offered as a freebie, but it definitely wont be a series I will continue. Speaking of this as a series, I just saw that it has over 15 books in it now.

And still little to no resolution or closure, and the books tend to end on cliffhanger. Oct 26, HJ rated it did not like it Shelves: Apr 24, Jessica rated it it was ok Shelves: I'm not sure this series is for me. I love Goddesses and gods and witchcraft and herbs! Shit, her name is Vervain, for crying out loud! For whatever reason, I just couldn't get into it. Maybe, I'll try again some other time in my life. Apr 15, kels rated it did not like it Shelves: Jan 29, Mallory rated it did not like it Shelves: Hate the heroine's voice, she tries too hard to be witty, and it's too much.

It felt too forced, and it fell flat. Too unlikable to continue. Oct 22, Tina J rated it it was amazing. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. Vervain definitely needs to steal his power and give him a dry slap for all the crap he did https: Vervain definitely needs to steal his power and give him a dry slap for all the crap he did at the beginning of the book.

The thing I enjoyed the most was the humour and the occasional chat she had with the reader it made the book a pleasure to read but the action scenes fell a little flat and Blue was defeated too easily for my tastes. Jul 25, Tiera McMillian rated it really liked it. I thought this was a good book. I enjoyed seeing the different facets and personalities of the gods portrayed.

I felt the connection V had with blue and her pain over his heartbreaking past. It was unsettling the way Afro was portrayed I mean it gave an explanation but it was still a tad unsettling that someone supposed to embody love could have been turned so cruel. I like some pop culture references however one in every thought and paragraph the FMC has is just too much they lose their humor and become eye roll invoking. Inner monologues and recklessness point to immaturity at times, and she tends to ramble on and on. Sep 26, Bec rated it liked it Shelves: So I'm a bit blah on this, it has potential but still didn't really wow.

It could be because this was one of this authors first books so the writing is not very polished yet. While I can like the heroine I also can't get behind her selflessness and her warm and cold feeling towards Thor, mostly because I don't understand them I think, they aren't spelled out clearly enough. I also think this book and probably the next are too long, definitely could have had at least a pages of filler edited So I'm a bit blah on this, it has potential but still didn't really wow.

I also think this book and probably the next are too long, definitely could have had at least a pages of filler edited out. The only thing This series is on Kindle Unlimited so I may read the second book and see if it improves. Jun 11, Sherry Cockerham rated it it was amazing. Really liked this one. Highly recommend to everyone.

Dec 16, Maryam Dinzly rated it did not like it Shelves: I really really HATE it when the main character is badly written, because it will ruin the whole story line for me. It was pretty long.

Are you kidding me? I mean, I know this book is about all the mythology gods or something like that.

Oathbreaker

Nobody wears bloody tight leather pants that makes you wanna rip it off anymore. Okay, maybe they do. But come on, listening to MC's horny thoughts about that leather pants make me wanna strangle myself. And it didn't pick up speed, at all. How can there be 15 freaking books about this? Where in the world did I get this book from, anyway? I honestly cannot remember. Must be one of those free amazon deals.

Mar 25, CoullCat rated it really liked it. I am so glad I did not read the reviews before purchasing Godhunter. So many readers have compared this series to other series by other authors, why? It is not going to be the same. Please go into this with an open mind, and if you are not a fan of witty snarky heroines who spout movie lines as often as breathing; then this is probably not the series for you. I, however, really enjoyed Godhunter. I could get behind the sass and wit of the main character, Vervain, and the whole book is from her PO I am so glad I did not read the reviews before purchasing Godhunter.

I could get behind the sass and wit of the main character, Vervain, and the whole book is from her POV so we get a lot of it. I also liked the use of different cultural themes and settings, I feel like we get to explore different parts of the world. I do feel a little hypocritical saying this, as normally I complain that books are too short, but I felt that this first book in the series might have been a tad too long. A kick butt heroine, hot men, magic, and more movie references than is nearly acceptable.

Godhunter is a hot mess of a mashup of myths and religions. Jun 28, Natasha rated it it was amazing. If you are trying to decide whether to read this book, do yourself a favour and DO IT!!!! I read the mixed reviews on this book and nearly didn't go for it but I was curious to see how Amy could keep a story going for 20 books so I bought this book. Best decision ever because I am 13 books in and this series is amazing.

Editorial Reviews

It starts off slow which can be frustrating to some but I was personally pleased with the build up and descriptions of people and places which makes her world come alive and you f If you are trying to decide whether to read this book, do yourself a favour and DO IT!!!! It starts off slow which can be frustrating to some but I was personally pleased with the build up and descriptions of people and places which makes her world come alive and you feel as if you know the characters really well.

It's neat how she weaves characters through the plot so you have a really good idea of the people who Vervain interacts with. These books have some tough topics and for sensitive readers it may be distressing, but Amy Sumida has a perfect balance of highs and lows in the story. The size of the series may scare some people off but in my opinion there can never be enough good books out there, the series never got stale and Amy keeps it interesting and you wouldn't believe some of the situations Vervain gets herself into.

Vervain is now one of my favourite characters, she grows so much throughout the series so you feel like you learn lessons with her and her humour in all situations is really great, I have laughed out loud many times a bit awkward when I'm trying not to laugh on the train. Thanks Amy for hours and hours of material! Dec 30, Jennifer G rated it really liked it Shelves: What a pleasant surprise this book was.

It has a great concept, wonderful characters, humorous dialogue, adventure, danger, passion. Vervain is a fantastic lead female. She's a breath of fresh air; equally clueless and competent, feminine and badass. Her sense of humor is a delight. The book is set in multiple worlds, human and the God realm. All Gods from every culture are real. They were once Atlanteans who gained power from human worship and blood sacrifices. Humans changed them according to What a pleasant surprise this book was. Humans changed them according to their beliefs and cultures.

But many of the Gods became power-hungry, no longer satisfied with their humans and are now actively causing human pain and suffering. Vervain has discovered this and has made it her mission to hunt down and kill the Gods. While doing this, she stumbles across a group of Gods fighting against their own for humans. This shakes up her beliefs, introduces her to new friends and new love.

Amy Sumida has created an endlessly entertaining world here. The mixture of Gods, cultures, the danger and the silliness of their adventures. It's a roller coaster ride of emotions, love and heartbreak, sweetness and nasty behavior. It's a perfect combination. I could hardly wait to grab book 2 to continue Vervain's adventure.

I love Urban Fantasy and mythology and was so excited about this one. It started out well enough, but it didn't take long for my excitement to fizzle. The book does have mythological characters, so many that by the time I was half way through, I'm not sure if any Pantheon was missed. The problem with all the gods crammed into this story is that I never figured out exactly why they needed Vervain for their quest or why she was a Godhunter in the first place. Basically, the world-building lacks co I love Urban Fantasy and mythology and was so excited about this one.

Basically, the world-building lacks continuity and the story is convoluted. I get the idea of a reverse harem and am not offended by it, but there needs to be some story to it and this character seems to be sexually attracted to almost every male she meets. A few times, I did come across a line or two that gave me reason to smile or chuckle, which is the only reason for the 2, rather than 1, star rating.

Vervain is a Godhunter. The characters may be gods, but they have more than a little humanity to harm, too. I am definitely getting the next book. Jul 12, Lburt rated it liked it Shelves: I love who Vervain has ended up with but she is constant drooling over all the male gods and its getting over the top. Its one thing to notice people are attractive its another to fantasize and have to practically run away cause you wanna screwed every body.

She practically dry humps all the male characters. Mar 22, Jacob rated it it was amazing. The explanation of mythological people is absolutely fascinating. The only question I have is; aren't the Atlanteans humans too? I mean I know they are and were ridiculously advanced, but I still find the fact that they refer to humans as another species to be an interesting part of these books. That being said, this book and series has been 5 stars!!! Aug 20, Matilde Damkier rated it liked it Shelves: It's my favorite subgenre subgenre subgenre, but I just can't. I like reverse harems, I like urban fantasy, I like a fighting woman, and I don't even mind the whole Mary Sue aspect.

What I do mind is the way her magic works in this book. Seriously, phrases like "butterflies of love", "my love magic" and "the love power" and variations therupon should be banned - not just from this book, from any book. There is just too much insta-presto therapy, and 3. There is just too much insta-presto therapy, and "soul-healing" going on in this book. It's all way too Kumbaya for me, and also - unrealistic, in a bad way. She can just use her "love magic" to reach into people and immediately heal the scars from centuries of abuse?

It also makes a lot of the characters seem kind of similiar, when she can just "heal" them and make them the perfect love interests. I don't know if it's the only way the author can write a love affair, but I really dislike how cheesy and lovey-dovey Vervain acts - both when she was with Thor, but also with Trevor. Both parties seemed way too The men became completely imasculated in the relationship, in my opinion. Which is why I'm rooting for Blue, or Odin or maybe it's just because I'm a sucker for the powerhouses - I'm hoping those two especially the new and improved Blue will take a bit of a harder line in a relationship, than Vervain's previous men have.

I mean, there is no need for that. What's wrong with like The number 78 just really screams: I just want her to have a lot, a lot of men - but I don't really care to actually create these characters, so I'll just give you all a big uniform glut of them, so I don't actually have to create characters with traits and stuff. I had the chorus to Bob Sinclair's "Love Generation" on a loop in my head for the first half of the book, and I was actually on the verge of scrapping the whole of it for being absolute hippie garbage. I don't mind my Mary Sue's, but I need at least some characters who don't just worship every word out of her mouth, or just blindly adore her, for not-too-many reasons.

On that front, I'm hoping Odin, and especially Blue, will provide some counterbalance to the bevy of lovestruck pets that Vervain is starting to accrue. All in all, I'll probably start the next book relatively soon, if only because I've already scoured all the lists of urban fantasy, and I think this series is the best one that I haven't already read.

Apr 10, CoullCat rated it really liked it. Of Gods and Wolves begins a week after the events in the first book. So much happens in the first half of the book. Most of the threads with the antagonists from the first book are neatly tied off for now , and we see enemy turn into friend. There are many new characters introduced. We get to meet Fenrir, the Wolf God, and all his wolves, Odin no explanation needed , Loki again, no explanation needed , and many different gods and goddesses as well as lion shifter men. Did I mention they were sexy lion shifter men? Mmm, only about 80 sexy lion shifter men whaaat?

Sumida has once again expertly pierced together many different myths and cultures - I really liked the Rwandan touches - to weave a unique chapter in the Godhunter series. I did feel that the majority of the action featured in the first half of the book, the second felt more like the beginning of another book. He comes across as young and childish, and sometimes appears to be missing some human intelligence he is a wolf, I guess.

I really liked this installment in the Godhunter series. It was fast paced and constantly had my attention. Amy Sumida does a great job of balancing the plot and the character driven plot lines. There is just enough of both to appeal to a person that prefers plot and to a person who prefers character development. I really like that about this series. She always has me laughing and I really enjoy her inner monologue. I appreciate how much Vervain 4. I appreciate how much Vervain struggles with doing what she wants to do and doing what she thinks is right. I think that that aspect of her character makes her seem more realistic and I connect with her more because of it.

One thing I was shocked about was the number of inspirational quotes in this book. There were a lot of things that Vervain said in her head that stood out to me and really made me think. They were mainly about relationships and dealing with break ups. I found a lot of them to be very true and very inspirational to me.

Another thing I really like about this series is how realistic it is when it comes to relationships. I really appreciate the fact that Vervain grows out of some of her relationships and I thought how she struggled with her feelings towards others was very realistic. While her breaking up with Thor was heartbreaking to me, I can appreciate the fact that the author did it. It really makes this series different and lets me know that Vervain is not going to always stay with the person she is with just because she loves him. It makes the relationships between characters all the more real.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I will be continuing the series with Oathbreaker and I hope I enjoy it just as much as I enjoyed this one. I really look forward to reading it.

Of Gods and Wolves

I'm quite conflicted about this book and series. I really wanted to like it more than I did. There were definitely some scenes and characters Trevor that I loved; however, most scenes felt disconnected from each other, and I do not always like Vervain's personality throughout the book. This book starts directly where the last left off. The problem with Blue got resolv I'm quite conflicted about this book and series. The problem with Blue got resolved within a few paragraphs within the first couple chapters of the books. It almost felt like a throw-away to get to another part of the story.

Speaking of the story, I've noticed that Amy Sumida can get quite long-winded in her descriptions, which made me lose interest in what I was reading between the action. The plot-twists were very predictable, and something bad was happening almost all the time. I have no idea if I want to try the next book.

Oathbreaker (The Godhunter, #3) by Amy Sumida

I feel like this story did not resolve anything major thing anyway. Nov 09, Jim Guldner rated it really liked it. I also like her insights and views on relationships, psychology. Oct 28, Natalie rated it liked it Shelves: Plenty of characters old and new. Light hearted but contains triggers. Loki was just vile. I liked Kirill he was sweet and so was Fenrir. The humour and sarcasm was there. Fast paced, violent with smut. Sep 16, Galina Sulaiman rated it it was amazing. Of Gods and Wolves Book two in the Godhunter series is just as good as the first!

Vervain the kick ass heroine that has you rolling in laughter with her snarky remarks is a joy. The myths, gods, legends and action will keep you on the edge of your seat. I'm in love with this series! Jul 08, Becca rated it really liked it.

So much story in just one book! Poor Vervain goes through so much, but rises to it like a champ. A few basic SPAG and formatting errors, but otherwise well written and consistent. Jan 16, Laurie Hopkins rated it it was amazing Shelves: She really grew on me in this book. And I totally get why Trevor is better for her then Thor, bot boy oh boy does she have her pick of hotties.

Jun 23, Terri West rated it really liked it. I am thoroughly enjoying this series. I can understand why some people may find Vervain irritating but isn't that just the point? She is someone who deals with trouble by turning it into a joke or a movie quote and that just who she is. Looking forward to book 3.

Aug 18, Gudrun rated it it was ok Shelves: Goodbye Vervain, let's never meet again. But before I go, the boyfriend issues? Yes, that's all on you, you're fickle and stupid and please stop being the main character of a 20 plus how? Mar 27, T. I really, really enjoy the Godhunter series. Vervain is a great snarky, and witty heroine and there's a wonderful supporting cast of characters to keep the action going and the romantic tension high. The plot was kinda cheesy, but that's part of the charm for this series.

Aug 05, Toma rated it liked it Shelves: Again the plot and character development left a lot to be desired. I liked Vervain much more, Odin was an interesting new character, but Thor and Blue could have been more Having said that I found this book to be much better than the first one.
