I bought this as a gift for an elderly relative, but I feel it is more appropriate for a juvenile reader. The stories are very short and sweet- more details would have added tremendously to the book's appeal. I say this because I know a few of the stories and felt there was so much more to add.

The book also has cute and wonderful photographs inserted between some of the stories that are paired with a quote from someone famous or a simple caption. But there is no story for these and that just left me asking questions. I absolutely love the cover photo of the kitten under the dog's ear, but alas the cover shot has no story!!! Do these two live together?

Are they friends or was this just a photographer's adorable creation? You won't find the answer in this book. Despite good photography, I was really disappointed in this book. Anyone that comes over to our house picks up this book and usually ends up reading one or 2 of the short stories. They show my kids how compassionate animals can be to each other when one needs help or love! It reminds me of a book I had as a kid.

Reader's Digest, I think. It was called short stories about Animal's we love! I still have the book from the late 's! I read these stories to my grandchildren.

I bought this book for a gift for my mom. I skimmed through it before wrapping it up and fell in love with the stories and the unusual friendships portrayed. It is a sweet view of relationships. This is a darling book for people of all ages. This is a favorite book in the waiting room of our clinic. All ages pick it up time after time. I bought this copy for my grandchildren ages 6 and 10 and they love it too.

What an amazing collection of dogs! We are dog lovers in our family and I gave this book to my daughter as a Christmas gift. She loves it so much! She remarked "I will never be sad again, as I can always look at this book and it will cheer me up! Our dog is getting jealous of the book as my daughter looks at it so much and makes those "awwww" noises that he feels are reserved for him!

Some reviewers have commented that less is more and would have liked larger photographs instead of pages chock full of dogs, but when I received the book I realized that it's all themed. There are pages with dogs with eyes closed, some of dogs with those extra long tongues, some in pairs. Each page brings on fresh oohs and aahs. I love looking at the individual dogs on the themed pages, they're all so adorable.

Elias Friedman has done an extraordinary job in capturing the dog's spirit. It brings forth so much emotion from me, and I want to go meet them all. They say your stress levels are much lower if you have a dog and regularly interact with it. That's certainly true, but this book is like a massive stress reliever too!

They are quite tightly packed, but I appreciate the sentiment of trying to fit as many of these amazing dogs into the book. I didn't have trouble flipping through, even with the quantity of photos. I was, however, very disappointed that the captions for the photos aren't included. I would have much preferred fewer images with their respective text descriptions.

The Dogist is my favorite Instagram account, and I purchased this book for my dad specifically because I knew he would love and appreciate the captions as much as I do. He'll still like the photos, but it's just not the same. Perhaps that's my fault for not doing more research before purchasing. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but still a beautiful book. One person found this helpful. I decided to look through this book one day when I was really stressed.

I had some where to go that I didn't really want to. The sweet doggy faces with just their names and what breed they are and how old they are soothed me and made me smile. Some of the dogs have clothes which I think is silly but people put a lot of thought into dressing their dogs. Some were chewing rawhide bones and their faces are funny. All dogs are beautiful to me so this book was ice cream for the eyes and I made up stories for all of them. This book is wonderful. I am one of The Dogist's biggest fans.

Hachiko Dog Statue In Tokyo

His work just makes me so happy. I got mine and immediately looked through the whole thing in one sitting. As anyone who follows and loves The Dogist knows, Elias has a way of capturing each dog's unique essence. If you are a dog lover but not already a fan of his you will be after getting this book. If you ARE already a fan, support his work and buy this book. I plan to get a bunch for Holiday gifts. I disagree with another poster's comments about the format since it is misleading; only some of the pages are in a collage-like format and even they are wonderful.

Already can't wait for The Dogist II. It's got large double page pictures and lots of smaller pictures, all sorted by interesting things, like dogs with special Eyes, or in Water etc. And it also tells their breed and their name. Excellent as a gift. Wish it had more pictures of my dog's type, but I found some that looked like him. Large variety of dogs in all shapes and sizes, even 3 legged dogs, and dogs with 1 eye. Sorted, so, for example, all the 3 legged dogs are together. I especially liked the pages of dogs with heads tilted.

Also tells little stories about some of the dogs. Elias Friedman has done an incredible job of putting together an engaging and enjoyable book of dog portraits. Fans who know Elias best through his work on instagram thedogist will be happy to see what he has done with his first book.

He separates the book into fun sections, eliciting "awws" at every page.
