Please do not use inappropriate language, including profanity, vulgarity, or obscenity. However, with all the hypotheses which we have at our disposal, it can be stated that creative imagination might indeed go far beyond the domain of humans. A recent study conducted by the BBC , with respect to the imaginative ability in animals, highlighted that, apart from the ability to assume things, animals can also pretend things to a large extent. From an early age, human children act out imagined scenes that conflict with reality. Plants, though living, are highly sessile in nature, meaning that they lack the ability to move around.

Do Animals Have Imagination? Here's What Research Says

Viki sometimes acted as if her pulltoy had got stuck on something. She tugged on the invisible string until she imagined that the toy had gotten free. Once, when her invisible toy was "stuck", she waited until her human caregiver pretended to free the toy, before continuing to play with it. Some of the more charming examples of animal imagination come from the female gorilla Koko , who was trained to use American Sign Language.

Koko routinely pretended that her dolls were her companions, frequently tried to nurse them, and often signed to them, sometimes giving them instructions. In one instance, a five-year-old Koko orchestrated an exchange between two toy gorillas, one blue and one pink.

Another time, a caregiver showed the ten-year-old Koko a photo of a bird in a magazine. The caregiver asked, "you sure?

What are you really? By pretending to be a bird, Koko is doing something that the youngest human infants can't do.

Phonophani: Animal Imagination

Young infants attempt to grasp objects in pictures as if they're really there. But by nineteen months, on average, grasping is replaced by pointing. By that age, human infants begin to understand that a picture is a representation of another object, not the object itself, much the same as a ten-year-old Koko understood that she wasn't truly a bird. On the other hand, children under four years seem able to pretend in some instances but not in others. For instance, three-year-old children routinely agree that a balloon on a television screen would float to the ceiling if the top of the set was removed.

In one interaction, a caregiver brought a toy dinosaur and hid it between her legs as she sat with the eleven-year-old ape. The caregiver poked the toy dinosaur out from behind her legs, causing Koko to jump backwards. After playing with the toy for a while, the caregiver asked, "You like it? The caregiver pretended as if the toy bit her own finger, shouting "Ow! But Koko instead offered a toy doll, letting it get bitten instead. BBC - Future - Do animals have imagination?

In this respect, humans and animals are alike. Both of them can move around as much as they wish, and carry out simple and complex tasks. Humans have been blessed with a power to imagine the unseen, even the unreal. Moreover, we also possess the capacity to turn our imaginations into reality, as several examples have shown.

Animals simply do not possess this ability of creative imagination. Imagination is an ability, largely associated with humans, to form and configure a set of new ideas and images, which can neither be seen and heard, nor sensed and touched. In other words, an imagination is that idea which is beyond human senses, and yet is clear in the human mind.

Imagination involves both tangible and intangible perceptions, which may be real as well as fictitious in nature.

Dreaming is also a part of imagination, as it brings forth all the thoughts that occur in an animate mind. However, the only difference between dreams and other forms of imagination, is that the former occur when the mind is in a subconscious state, when an individual is asleep, whereas the latter is the product of a conscious mind, when a person is awake and active. It is extremely important to note that, it is the thoughts which trigger imaginations, and therefore, both of them can never be separated from each other. A lot of studies have been made with respect to the functioning of animal brains, and the way different animals may perceive things, known and unknown.

Though, it cannot be said for sure, as to whether or not animals actually bear an ability of creative imagination. Several studies and observations indicate that they definitely, to a certain extent, possess an ability to assume things. Take dogs, for instance, they have an inherent instinct to dig with their feet, and hide their possessions in the holes that they dig.
