Chantajes y secretos (Deseo) (Spanish Edition)

Oh so much exposition. Every other chapter told the story of the life that this character had or supposedly had gone through. About the time a murder happened or a secret passage was discovered "electric torches" I'm not sure Christie is for me. About the time a murder happened or a secret passage was discovered "electric torches"; heh , I started to enjoy it.

But then the book was already winding to its conclusion. I came close to giving up several times, but my stubbornness got me through. I keep hoping I'll find another Christie book to win me over. So far though, the approachable nature for millions makes it a little bland for me.

I guess I want something a little more off the beaten path. Or at least, I'd like to beaten over the head with exposition a lot less. View all 3 comments. The next book in my effort to read through Dame Agatha's collected works, I found this book to be a bit contrived, with too many coincidences and a bit too predictable. Perhaps I need to take a break from her books? In any case, it was still a decent quick read and an interesting tale.

And the oddest coincidence is that I just read that passage in 2 Samuel a day or two prior to reading the reference in this book. I think I liked it more both because Christie is clearly having fun, and because the Ruritanian-inspired style adventure doesn't annoy me the way her anti-working class stuff does. I was amused by the ending, which was completely over the top for a detective novel, but quite appropriate for Ruritania.

Tokoh yg paling saya tunggu tunggu kemunculannya di buku ini adalah Alistair Brent, alias Marquis Caterham kesembilan: Tanpa beliau, buku ini bakal jadi buku detektif biasa eh She's an awesome author.

The reader gets a peek into aristocratic English life of a much earlier time period. These books are as nice to read as curling up in your favorite chair with a cup of cocoa and the dog on your lap while it blizzards outside.

I liked this Agatha Christie mystery - murder, missing jewels, mistaken identity, country manor house, unpublished journals. All the usual you would expect from this Golden Age author. However, I got confused from time to time keeping the characters straight. This story may be better served by reading rather than listening. My least favorite of Agatha Christie's interbellum political-intrigue thrillers; some fun and I enjoyed seeing the characters that later appear in The Seven Dials Mystery , but it relies on one outlandish coincidence too many for my taste.

Love me a little Christie every few months. You should try it! Dame Christie is the absolute Mistress of Mystery - she keeps it "simple", deceptively so. This is not the pinnacle of her work, but it's good, very good - definitely up to her standard. Some of the same characters as in "Seven Dials Mystery" --and this comes first--though I read "Dials" first and liked it better.

Some awful continual racism really mars this story. Which is a shame, because there is also a lot of humour and satire here with great characters. Minus the long-winded exposition in the first few pages about the political situation in Herzoslovakia, this is a fun and light read. Not as much a thriller as Christie's other mysteries, this one would actually make a pretty good comedy.

Although this is considered an entry in Superintendent Battle's series, I think this is just his first appearance. Anthony Cade is actually the dashing protagonist and amateur detective. Anthony is a handsome, young adventurer whose cool, unflappable demeanor and nonchalant wit will win you over even if he's not Poirot or Marple.

He's a lot of fun and it's too bad this is his only appearance. Maybe once I reread this, the political backstory will make more sense to me. Basically, a late count in Herzoslovakia wrote some potentially scandalous memoirs that could disrupt the political scene in Herzoslovakia if published. The troubled Balkan state just had a revolution and is about to have a new king. Britain and the US get involved, each backing an heir to the throne in exchange for oil concessions. Add in a murder and things get complicated for all parties.

If that's not intricate enough, there's a fellow named King Victor, a notorious impersonator and jewel thief, and a mob-like organization named the Comrades of the Red Hand who are all entangled in this conflict. Personally, the ending seemed a little too tidy and even rushed to me, but I really believe this is one of the rare Christie novels where the plot is secondary to the characters.

I think 3 stars is fair because of the confusing narrative, but honestly, it had 5 star entertainment value. I love to read Christie's mysteries because I can too play the part of detective. However, in this story their too few hints and deducting was almost impossible.

Almost everyone has some motive for murder and everyone is under suspicion in Christie's works, but not in this one. Most people have no motive nor chance.
