The Jongurian Trilogy by Greg Strandberg

I'm not a huge fan of featureless protagonists. I understand that characters like Bryn are meant to be audience surrogates, and Bryn's lack of personality is so readers can more easily insert themselves into Bryn's place, but some readers may find Bryn dull as a consequence. It's a bit of a difficult read, but I still recommend it. Mar 18, Kyra Halland rated it liked it Shelves: Then his other uncle, an Adjurian trade official, shows up saying it's time Bryn saw the world.

Bryn goes with his uncle to an important trade conference in the capital city, then on a trade mission to one-time enemy Jonguria, where things turn far more dangerous and deadly than you would expect from a simple trade mission. To be honest, I ended up skimming large parts of the first half, but the final chase and fights kept me glued to the book until the end, which is really more of an intriguing lead-in to book 2. Mar 01, Carol Bosselman rated it liked it. This book tore me in half. The story is great and kept me involved, but two things were, to me, very distracting; if not for those I would have said 4.

First, far too much description.

Key of Knowledge Key Trilogy, #2 Audiobook

We're a third of the way into the book before the story gets going. Pages upon pages describing every single boat in a harbor and every article of clothing on every single person in the palace most of whom we'll never meet again Second, this needs editing badly.

The This book tore me in half. There are many errors that should have been caught, and one error kept cropping up to the point where I'm wondering if something is wrong with the author's keyboard: At one point I thought maybe it was on purpose to play up a dialect, but no, it was everywhere, and so was the random use of quotation marks.

If these can be cleaned up and the descriptions may not need to be, some people like that much detail , this has the makings of a wonderful epic story. Very descriptive If you're a fan of feel like you're there descriptions of place and time, this is a fantastic book for you.

The action scenes work well too. For me it was a bit of a long read, but not one I regret. I may continue in the series, but not until I knock out some others in my reading queue. Jan 08, MarkP rated it really liked it.

After a bit of a slow start this turned into a thoroughly entertaining adventure tale. The characters on the whole are well drawn and the writing more than competent. I ended up caring about what happened to the group of Adjurians and will certainly pick up the other books in the series. The book was OK. The opener was slow, it was predictable to the very end. Even the quasi cliffhanger, which is a queue to having planned multiple books. This is a historical fantasy with familiar political issues roiling with pitched battles on raging seas; and adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat and eager for more.
