Sabrina Fair – Broadway Play – Original | IBDB

Film s So vastly different from the movie version, it's no wonder that Samuel Taylor walked out. This comedy of manners, for the most part, is from the perspective of friend-of-the-family Julia Ward McKinlock. A delightful character, she's the kind of "aunt" everyone wishes they had grown up with. Linus is also quite the ladies' man, and at the play's outset he is "taking out" his brother's ex-wife. As with the movie, Sabrina's return from Paris takes everyone aback, and breathes a new life into the Larrabee household. While her eyes are set on sorting out her feelings for David, the interplay between her and the mischievous Linus is subtle and satisfying. Add in the absent-minded but loveable Linus Sr.

Nov 09, Bt rated it really liked it Recommends it for: People who have already seen the movie. Recommended to Bt by: The movie is famous. It's not nearly as good as the movie it inspired - Sabrina starring Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, and William Holden - but it's still an enjoyable read. I found a few good monologues I really like which is quite an accomplishment; the number of good monologues I have ever found is in the single digits.

The movie's plot is much better and more interesting, and the movie is funny in a way that the play isn't. On the other hand, I migh It's not nearly as good as the movie it inspired - Sabrina starring Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, and William Holden - but it's still an enjoyable read. On the other hand, I might like the play better if I saw it performed instead of just reading it. It just seemed kind of out of the blue. And Linus wasn't that likable. Again, though, that's something an actor can remedy in the space between the lines. Sep 04, Kat rated it liked it Shelves: Romantic comedy-fluff masquerading as a comedy of manners.

No real social commentary in this one, though, so I wouldn't really call it that. I wasn't horribly impressed by the script on its own the way I've been impressed by others. I never laughed out loud, although I did smile occasionally. The ending was just too transparent, and relies heavily on actor interpretation, not on dialogue, which makes for a bit of a dull read. I might be more impressed once I've seen it on stage.

From a theatric Romantic comedy-fluff masquerading as a comedy of manners. From a theatrical technician's perspective, though, I had fun putting together my design for the sets, and look forward to seeing the final product on stage at my school. THAT bit will be cool.

Apr 19, P rated it really liked it Shelves: Markedly different from the two film versions, but well worth a read for anyone familiar with them or in love with at least the Hepburn one, as I am. If one has not seen the films, s he might receive the great characters even better than me.

I had trouble getting Audrey, Bogart, and William Holden out of my head. That said, I would have loved to see Joseph Cotten take on the sardonic, even mischievous, Linus, Jr. Oct 20, Lindsay Wilson rated it liked it Shelves: A quaint little play, not terrible by any means, but not great either. I didn't get attached to any of the characters; all of Sabrina's potential beaus feature so briefly that I didn't really care if she ended up with any of them. Oddly, my favourite element was Linus Larrabee Senior's habit of attending funerals for recreation.

Seeing it staged would doubtless make it better. Dec 01, Benjamin Smith rated it it was amazing Shelves: A bit of a s theater fosil, the set for this play is overly elaborate. If you've only ever seen the Billy Wilder or Sydney Pollack film versions you're missing out on some of the original magic that only Broadway could dish out back in the day.

Nov 27, Kelli rated it really liked it Shelves: I enjoyed the original script but not nearly as much as I adore both subsequent films. I think I'm mostly just a sucker for Linus, period. Thank goodness for that. Aug 08, Nikki rated it it was amazing.

I have read this- just not the Acting Edition. The one I read was blue not yellow. But this is one of the best plays I have ever read. I love the opening monologue with total abandon, and quote it often.

Jul 11, Amy Beth rated it it was ok. I am a huge fan of both movies so I thought I'd read the book. The story line was different from the movie. Not at all what I expected and left me disappointed. Jan 14, Whitney rated it liked it. Fun for fans of the two film versions, but ultimately just a starting point. Jun 11, Casey rated it it was amazing. Sharp, witty, and fresh even today, this play was a ton of fun to read. It's nothing really like the film version s , but I still found it charming.
