This was gracefully offered for free through Amazon by the author for a brief time period and after reading the description, I have to say, I was intrigued and snapped at the chance to read it. Even though I got this for free, I will still review it as honestly as I would any other book. The plot of 'The Curse of Europa' is quite basic; eight astronauts, of varying expertise, on a mission to discover if there is life in the vast ocean that lies under a thick layer of ice on the surface of one of Jupiter's moons, Europa.

However, it was never going to be that simple as that as there is a "curse", which makes every mission of this sort fail. The story is set in the future in , so this drew me into the plot as the complicated advanced technologies are much more believable and add to the futuristic feel.

My first thoughts on this eBook format book is that I love the writing style. I am not usually a fan of the present tense being used in novels but I think in this case, it adds to the sense of danger. I also like that within the first two chapters, all of the characters are introduced and a romantic subplot is established. As I read on, at about a third of the way through, the romantic side of the story seemed to take over slightly but I quite enjoyed it, surprisingly, as the romance seemed natural. The story is gripping and exciting, and the author seems to have researched the subject thoroughly as the book is full of accurate scientific terms.

Although I found some of the event that take place towards the end of the book a bit far-fetched, I really loved the progression of the story and the development of the characters. I actually quite enjoyed the epilogue ending as it tied off all of the plot points instead of leaving it open for a sequel, even though I believe that this is volume one in a series.

Overall, I loved this science fiction novel. It was exciting and fast-paced, a definite 5 out of 5 stars, and I will definitely be looking to read more works by this author. Like I said, I wanted to like this. The science seemed well researched and thought out, at least to my amateur eye, but the narrative itself…well, it could have used some more work.

It seems more like a screenplay than a novel, maybe even the detailed outline for a screenplay before the writer goes back in and fleshes things out. Sometimes we get a full-out scene, but far more often everything is glossed over in generalization. There are exceptions, but all too often they feel forced.

Too much of the narration feels like set description and blocking, and a disappointing amount of what should be characterization is simply character description. The main couple characters are reasonably developed, but most of the others are merely caricatures. The plotting was solid, if predictable. There were a few grammatical errors, but not too many for being a self-published book. As a bonus, the book includes numerous CG art images at the beginning of select chapters. This works so long as it is confined to the spectral landscapes and spacescapes, but the lack of color printing really makes it look poorly-done when you're pulled inside the ship or shown the crew roster.

It doesn't really detract from the experience, but it certainly does the book no favors. I blame it on the lack of a professional publisher. At the end of the day, I have to conclude that this book was simply incredibly mediocre. The good news is that if Mr. Kayser cleans this up a bit and fleshes it out a bit more, this or his next book, if he decides to simply move on could be really good.

Some flirting, but no real sexual content. Brief disaster and monster violence, which I shall avoid describing in order to keep from giving away plot points. The characters were believable, the science accurate, and the story compelling. There were, however a couple of things that detracted from my enjoyment. The first was the narration style. On the one hand, it helps keep up the pace of the story, but This book reads like a motion picture and could easily have been a five star book.

On the one hand, it helps keep up the pace of the story, but I feel like the reader loses the opportunity to empathize with the characters. Many authors use this style and it is just not for me.

Second were the editing errors. They weren't overwhelmingly numerous, but they seemed to come along at just the right time to slap me out of the narrative just when I really started enjoying it. I also need to mention that I won this book as a giveaway on Goodreads.

The Curse of Europa: Europa Mission - A journey to find alien life on Jupiter's ice-moon Europa

I was contacted by the author about how I would like it signed and received it right-away. I really appreciated the opportunity to read this. I think that this author has some really good books in his future since he is building from this level and I look forward to reading them. Brian Kayser has done his research very well and used this knowledge to create a believeable, whirlpool-like, story which draws the reader into its heart, mixing the human elements of adventure, extreme courage, endeavour, fearfulness, hope and even a little romance with plausible scientific thought regarding what might be waiting for Homo Sapiens Sapiens out there in space beyond our tiny sphere of life called Earth.

After purchasing the book and adding it to my list on Goodreads I realized this book was already on my "to read" list.

This is a beautiful read. It's not real long, but it's not a short story either. I totally enjoyed the characters, and best of all the visualization of the planet. I felt like I was standing on a frozen planet looking at ice mountains and riding a Rover over the surface. Very enj I found this author following me on Twitter, it made me curious enough to look his work up. Jeez, I can't wait for his next book. I am definitely a fan! Jan 16, Cori Renn rated it really liked it Shelves: The Curse of Europa has a rough start, but once it gets going, you are whisked away to the phenomenon that is Europa.

Kayser really did his research for this book. The technical jargon is amazingly thorough, which enhances the sense of reality for this piece of fiction.

See a Problem?

The narration is jumpy but the plot is rock solid unlike Europa , and the ending is powerful. This book made my heart race and it made my heart ache. I truly enjoyed this book and all it has to offer. Jan 05, Linda rated it really liked it Shelves: In Curse of Europa, the reader accompanies 8 astronauts as they explore Europa.
