The way in which traumatic memory has shaped narratives, contributing at the same time to the process of witnessing and survival of traumatized individuals has been widely investigated in literary and cinematographic productions, especially in relation to extreme historical events such as the Shoah and postcolonial studies.

Nonetheless trauma does not only have repercussion on the cognitive and emotional system, but itprofoundly affects the body; many symptoms of traumatized individuals are somatically based. This panel explores the relationship between trauma and the body in literary, cinematic and photographic production in Italian studies. How does the body inform the experience of trauma? In which way does the traumatized body emerge in literary and visual works and to what extent, if any, traumatized artists use their own body as mean for working through and out traumatic experiences?

Finally, what is the relationship of trauma and the body to wider systems of power and oppression? Any approach is welcome.
