Against the 7th Flag: Chased from its habitat among California's giant redwoods, a mammoth grizzly worshipped as a bear god by the local Indians goes on a rampage. When the son of the Indians' chief is killed by the animal, the tribe seeks out Clint Ryan to hunt it down.

Although he demurs at first, circumstances force him to join both Indians and other hunters and to go after the bear. Martin alternates between the point of view of the humans and that of the bear as it kills its pursuers one by one. Dialogue is often stilted and fails to ring true. The casual evil of Ryan's competitors in the hunt, never explained, seems largely unmotivated. Still, with tight plotting, Martin manages to keep the reader's attention, and series fans should not be disappointed. Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.

Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. The more I read of this book, the more I enjoyed it. I live in Sacramento in Northern California and have traveled extensively through the central valley in which this novel takes place. The story takes place in my stompin' grounds, only or so years ago. The natural beauty of the giant redwoods and Half-Dome reminded me that the power and beauty of nature preceded us and carries on across the span of time.

I usually expect characters in Westerns to be caricatures, but I cared about the characters or hated them passionately. I loved viewing some scenes from the bear's point of view especially when it was feeding time. The author did a good job of building the tension toward a satisfying conclusion. While slow to kick off the read is quite catching once gotten into. Martin writes with a style all his own, differing from other such writers in the same genre.

Probably the best thing he did with the story was leap-frogging By which I mean switch between different points or happenings in the story instead of finishing one part out in a long stretch. The charecters are also enjoyable, whether good or evil on I am not a huge fan of Westerns, but Shadow of the Grizzly is one I would revisit.

The charecters are also enjoyable, whether good or evil one may take their pick.

Often times you can guess what the outcome of certain things will be, but, for reasons I have already stated, that is in no wise a con. The only thing I might not have liked were certain veiws of one of the charecters toward the very end of the book, but since this is not a review containing spoilers I shan't elaborate. A slow start, an engaging middle, and an almost totaly satisfactory ending make this book one to be read indeed.

Unless of course, you have a deep-rooted hatred for Westerns. Nov 26, Sheila rated it liked it.

I think the story is a little slow starting, but it kept me going after a while. There's killing involved, by bear and by people, but it's not too graphic. There's a lot of description of the area, meadows, trees, etc. If you're not into that, it's easy to skip over. I enjoyed his description of the redwoods. It must have been quite a time with the gold rush, outlaws, wild animals.

Some found that the novel was unputdownable and vivid. This is one series that fans of L. Clint strikes a bargain and is supposed to go into the dregs of San Francisco and Barbary Coast. It is here that Clint finds the baracoons and the flesh traders. He and a newly freedman are put together, he finds that he has a new friend here.

The person is also repulsed that Chinese girls are being sold for deviant interests to be satisfied. Flashing blades and gunfire are the result. Fans of the novel found that Martin writes great and vivid description that enhances the action scenes found in the novel.

Clint Ryan Series

Good fighting evil is a strong part of this novel. Characters are well drawn and feel like real people. Not just cardboard caricatures. This is a great series to read, either for western novel fans or for those just looking for something good to read. For readers, this series provides them with nothing but great stories that they can read over the course of a single day, some just one sitting.

Martin should be proud of himself for being able to write such amazing novels about the old west. California is now an American state in this novel. It is a young land that has a lot of potential. All kinds of men these include con men, speculators, roughnecks, and fortune hunters have come from all over the Earth to take some of the wealth for themselves. It is the most cutthroat on riverboats that ply the waters from the wide open interior to San Francisco.

Money goes to progress and with money comes deceit, violence, and greed. Clint Ryan signs on as the master-at-arms for the Beneicia Belle, a ship, he finds that he may have just signed his very own death warrant. He is blackmailed by the owner of the ship, and is attracted to a woman as dangerous as the sea he left behind. Not to mention very beautiful. He sets off on a course of murder.
