The Nanjing Massacre: Poems

The poems capture all perspectives of the tragedy—from the weary, casually cruel Japanese soldiers to the uncomprehending child victims, and from the desperate helpless parents and the brutalized comfort women to the bloodless yet vicious bureaucrats of death. Drawing on published histories, memoirs, photographic collections, and oral histories, he composes testimony after testimony for the silenced—poetic memorials that also provide some measure of revenge against the victors.

At key moments, he also broadens the frame of reference, linking the crimes in China to the atrocities committed since then at different times, on different continents. Massacres, Lum suggests, bear a family resemblance—the human family.

We decided to roll him off by a shattered tree and make our way to the summit to find another of our wounded. It hurt—but then again maybe it did not matter to this guy any more. He had crosses over to another world. It was for us to help others persevere in ours. We are so hungry that when we come across a hidden crate of canned meat we lose all discipline and climb over each other to grab what we can. We do not notice the airplane overhead until it starts strafing us.

Yet another profound example where humanity collectively failed. My heart goes out to the sufferers. I am an Indian and grew up hearing multiple propaganda against the Chinese yet did not know about this. Thank you for this blog post.
