    • Believed to have been written and first performed in around , The Spanish Tragedy tells the story of Hieronymo, marshal of Spain, whose son Horatio is murdered by Balthasar, son of the viceroy of Portugal, and Lorenzo, son of the Duke of Castile, because Balthasar has his eye on Bellimperia. In the play, the characters played by Hieronymo and Bellimperia kill the characters played by Balthasar and Lorenzo, but instead of merely pretending to stab them, both Hieronymo and Bellimperia actually kill the two men.

    Watching the events of the play from the sidelines has been the ghost of Don Andrea, who had been killed by Balthasar in battle prior to the play. It would be easy to view The Spanish Tragedy , in a rather simplistic and superficial analysis, as a crude and inchoate example of the revenge tragedy. But even when the characters in The Spanish Tragedy strike us as a little two-dimensional, the style of the dialogue is often intriguing and curiously subtle. Time and again Kyd utilises a sort of halfway house between these two extremes, unrhymed blank verse and rigidly rhyming couplets.

    The repetition suggests a sense of stasis: The plot is laid of dire revenge: On, then, Hieronymo, pursue revenge: For nothing wants but acting of revenge. It represents the beginnings of greatness for Elizabethan drama. A Short Analysis of T. He also is said to have written Cornelia , a Senecan tragedy, in Kyd also worked with and influenced Shakespeare, who is said to have used ideas from Kyd to write his great play, Hamlet.

    Until the late 19th century, little was known about Thomas Kyd. It was in that The Spanish Tragedy was finally recognized and proven to be written by him.

    He was the son of a London scrivener, and appears to have had a formal primary education. He may have also studied at a tailor's school in London, thus acquiring a learning of the classics, although he never attended the university. Among some of his other plays was a translation of Torquato Tasso's Padre di Famiglia , published as The Householder's Philosophy Robert Garnier's Cornelia was also partly written by Kyd.

    He worked alongside a number of different playwrights while doing these, but they are considered to be his work based on historical evidence and writing style. He was associated with another playwright, Marlowe, later in life. Unfortunately, they were both accused of heresy and Kyd was tortured and imprisoned.

    Previous to this play, Gorboduc , written in by Thomas Sackville and Thomas Norton, set the precedent for the popularity of tragic plays in England at the time.

    Life of the Author

    This play takes place between two different countries, Spain and Portugal. There are a multitude of characters and a highly complex interplay between them.

    Hieronimo is the protagonist, although he appears first as a minor character. There are numerous other characters, including Bel-Imperia and Andrea, who play the roles of antagonist and revenge-seeking ghost. The play in fact begins with the death of Andrea at the hand of Balthazar. Andrea is a Spanish nobleman, and is fighting against Portugal when he dies at the hand of the Portuguese Balthazar.

    Don Andrea returns to tell his story and to exact revenge for his untimely death. His ghost exemplifies the elements of the revenge tragedy, which includes the role of a vengeful ghost as a trademark. Ironically, Balthazar has been turned over to the Spanish, and has fallen for Bel-Imperia.

He does this when Bel-Imperia and Balthazar are scheduled to be married by convincing them to be in a play. This is the play within a play device to further bring readers into the tangled vengeful plot, also a hallmark of the revenge tragedy genre. Don Andrea is then able to orchestrate from the afterlife to assign the helpful characters such as Hieronimo, Bel-Imperia, and Horatio to positive roles in the play within the play.

    Obviously, the true antagonist, Balthazar, meets with a grisly fate of torture and hell fire. This follows the plotline of an Elizabethan tragedy, and in fact established its' popularity in the theaters of the time.
