3 Screenplays in Search of a Lens

Add shot headings when logic requires it. Sometimes plain logic requires a new shot heading. Don't add a shot heading where there is no new shot. Sometimes writers set up as a shot heading what is really just a movement of the camera. They know that at this depth, they're fighting for their lives. But they're choking on the smoke. And they're losing the battle. The pan is really just a camera move within the existing shot and shouldn't logically be given a new shot heading. Instead, format the sequence like this: An important exception to this rule occurs when we start on a closeup or an extreme closeup and pull back to reveal that we're in a whole new location.

For practical reasons namely, that production personnel need a new master shot heading to go with the new location , a new shot heading is added. She inserts it in a doorknob. Dotty lets herself in. Add shot headings to break up long passages of action and lend a sense of increased tempo. Because of the narrow column that even intermittent dialogue makes down the center of the script page, a screenplay often contains a great deal of white space.

Add in the space around shot headings, scene transitions and a few short paragraphs, and a typical script page contains relatively few words, looks spacious and reads fairly breezily. By contrast, action sequences, arguably the fastest-paced sequences written for the screen, can appear in a script like dull blocks of words crowding the page.

Ironically, then, when an action sequence obliterates too much of the white space, action can end up reading so slowly that readers are tempted to skim it or even skip it entirely. Break up the action with short shot headings to restore white space and help guide the reader's eye down the page. Compare the following sequences, the first with only a single master shot heading and the second with additional shot headings inserted to break up the page. Ahead, a concrete beam hangs low. Too low for the high-profile vehicle. He makes a desperation left turn down another ramp but cuts the corner too close.

Michael plunges his giant convertible deeper into the garage, his hair blowing in the open air. At the bottom of the ramp, steel pipes crisscross the low ceiling. Shreds of insulation, stuffed animals and cooking utensils fill the air. Michael finds a ramp sloping up toward daylight and heads for freedom, no longer pursued, piloting the decimated chassis of what was once his proud home. In an early review by the trade magazine The Hollywood Reporter , Todd McCarthy said that, "After nearly crashing and burning on his last solo flight in , Iron Man returns refreshed and ready for action in this spirited third installment There is quite a bit of Black's trademark attitude and humor here as well, things like a throwaway reference to the sci-fi classic Westworld and a goofy character who has Tony Stark's likeness tattooed on his forearm.

Black and company throw all kinds of stuff at the audience, and though it doesn't all work, a lot of it does and the attempt to be different and create unguessable twists is always appreciated. He's also, suddenly, rather family-friendly. Some of the movie's best moments are shared by Stark and latchkey kid Harley Ty Simpkins , who mock their budding father-son relationship while acting it out.

Nick De Semlyen of the UK film magazine Empire had criticisms, even while giving the film four of five stars. Finding it "a swinging caper with wit, balls, heart and exploding baubles," he said the villainous "super-soldiers who can regenerate body parts and survive astounding damage [are] visually interesting The most wonderful of Black's surprises harkens back to his '80s reputation for character revision and is simply too good to ruin here.

The energy bleeds out of the film; it's as if the producers were scared the crowd would riot over not enough digital fakeness. Reacting more negatively, Stephen Whitty of The Star-Ledger found the film "slickly enjoyable" for the visual effects, but said, "[T]here's something empty about the film. Like Tony's suits, it's shiny and polished. But this time, there's nobody inside This movie has neither the emotionalism of the first film, nor the flashy villains of the second Tony's relationship with girlfriend Pepper Potts is in inexplicable jeopardy—and then simply fixes itself.
