Falling for the Highland Rogue (Mills & Boon Historical)

When that book burst onto the scene Romanceland was changed forever. Now, things have changed since then; we've seen many an author come and go. The style of writing has changed. I don't think I could make it through the pages of The Flame and the Flower without cringing now; however, I'm awfully glad it appeared on the scene. So, where is this going, you ask. Somewhere in all this joyous book reading I became a snob.

For some reason, I never read too many Harlequin books. Don't know why, maybe it was because there was a plethora of Barbara Cartland books sitting right there beside them and I associated the two. I've never read any of Ms. Lethbridge's books, so I'm new to this series - maybe I should have read the others, but I was able to grasp the plot-line without too much trouble. As I said before, I've read romance a long time, so I'm pretty familiar with the "formula. The hero, Logan Gilvry, is uncommonly handsome, ultra smart and extremely cagey That age was one of the things that would later irritate me.

He's 21, however he must be some kind of savant because he seems to have almost super-hero abilities to read people and know just what their next move is going to be. Because of these abilities, I had a hard time remembering that he's just a babe in the woods. However, for most of the book he is a wonderful hero, even though through most of it he is manipulating those around him. Maybe he's so worldly wise because he's never had sex. He's never ventured into the valley of whankee-woo. Oh sure, he kissed a girl and somehow that kiss damaged him forever and ever - which isn't saying a lot since he's only 21 - not a very long forever.

So, then we have the other side of the coin - our heroine Charity - not so white. In fact, she was at one time employed in a brothel but she was such an awful strumpet she was purchased by a really nasty gangster, our villain, Jack. I have to say that Jack is a really impressive bad guy - there isn't any possibility that this guy is going to show up as a good guy in a later book.

He is spine-chillingly creepy. The scenes that take place in the dark underworld that Charity inhabits are wonderfully vivid. There is a great sense of danger and for Charity there is a sense of hopelessness. The money she is squirreling away to get away from her sordid life is poignant, especially because we has the reader know she is never going to be able to leave her dark world behind. At least not in the manner she dreams of. I would imagine that a number of readers will not find either Charity or Logan to be very likeable. There is a continual dance between these two as they try to outmaneuver each other.

In fact, Charity is such a dark character I kept wondering how Ms. Lethbridge was going to rehabilitate her. And, this is where this book lost some of its punch. The first portion of the book was well-developed, with some exciting even if they were unlikeable characters. Then, in the last five or so chapters, things started to fall apart and I was face to face with my old Harlequin prejudice The ending was weak - people who hated each other suddenly were dancing with the butterflies. There was just a very unsatisfying rush to a happy ending and no good explanation as to Charity's past and Logan turned from a super-know-it-all to a jump-to-the-wrong-conclusion guy.

Bottom-line, I thought the first part of the book was a well-developed and exciting book. It just didn't hold up so well in the last part. Jan 03, Joelle rated it it was amazing Shelves: Ann Lethbridge 5 stars Reviewed by: What a great story.

A page turner from beginning to end full of love, adventure, mystery and attempted murder. This is a first time read for me by this author and I really enjoyed her story and her style of writing and will definitely look into her other novels. The cover of this book deserves thumbs up just love it it's awesome. Really love the Gilvy family characters. There a bunch of crafty hot highlanders with a possessive and loving side to each and everyone of them and treat there women like gold. Can I have one please?

Charity took a bit of warming up to as she ran hot and cold but, Logan I fell for the Hunky Highlander from the get go. I just love reading about those Highlanders so this story was just perfect for me. Call me a Highlander junkie if you will. I always try and pick a favorite character to rave about when I read a story and my pick would have to be Logan. He was a smart crafty kind hearted man who never judged people or put people down due to there circumstances.

He either liked you or he didn't. I love it when a man goes after want he wants knowing his is going to be and up hill battle. But, what do you expect when two strong personalities come together. Neither wants to give an inch. The chemistry between Logan and Charity was great the two just needed to be near each other and the fire began and the flames roared to life especially for Logan..

They made the perfect match but, as always love is never easy. People with money power stand between this couple. There whole courtship is surrounded by danger and deceit. I did enjoy Charity character even though she ran hot and cold. I do understand why she did some of the things she did and why. But, there were times that I really hated her for what she was doing to Logan. She had that man tied up in knots more times that not and kept breaking his heart.

Charity was a strong women left alone in the world to fend for herself when she disgraced herself and her family threw her out. She became hard and driven to do what she must do to survive which I applaud her for but, in doing so she was mixed up in a plot with a very dangerous man. Her life was in jeopardy more times that not and for Logan as well.

Falling for the Highland Rogue by Ann Lethbridge

This was an awesome read so much always going on. What should have been a business deal that would be cut and dry turned out to be a dangerous game of cat and mouse. You never knew who to trust you always had to out smart or out whit your opponent. Danger lurked at every turn. Then combine that with falling in love for someone that may or not be good for you is another contender.

Charity and Logan would make and awesome couple but, watching a relationship developed between these two you had some serious doubts if it would ever last to the bitter end. Logan fell head over heels. Charity on the other hand ran hot cold and secretive, crafty and unable to read if you could trust her motives or not. But, you never doubted that she had strong feelings for Logan even when she was constantly pushing him away. It broke my heart some of it was to prevent him from being in danger but, the other side of the coin it was that she just thought she was undeserving and not good enough for the love that Logan bore for her.

A recommended read to all. Enjoyable fast and intriguing read to keep you turning the pages. Looking forward to other books to read in this series and also other novels from this author as well. This next story in the Gilvrys of Dunross is a wonderful book. It is filled with love, suspense and second chances. Logan is a commanding character. He is powerful, compelling and above all has a good heart. Charity is his equal.

Her painful past drives her actions, but the desire for love is still there. The story pulls you in and keeps you enthralled. The other characters add to the suspense.

The book focuses nicely on Logan and Charity with brief glimpses at the other brothers. It doesn't give too much away from the previous stories either, so readers can go to the beginning and enjoy new tales. The steamy level has a couple scenes in the second half of the book. The minor characters also hold interesting personalities, but the author only shares glimpses. I wouldn't mind hearing more of Sanford's or Growler's story.

Jan 11, Gail rated it liked it Shelves: If it hadn't been part of a 3-book set, I might not have read it. I almost didn't finish it, but it did finally catch my attention. Nor am I sure I can explain why I couldn't get into it A lot of the elements are things I have liked in the past-- the sadder but wiser heroine, the gallant Scottish hero-- Maybe it was the selection of scenes.

There was a lot of stuff with King George IV visiting Edinburgh whoopdedoo and a lot of scenes with the bad guy Not really my cup o Nice enough read. Not really my cup o tea. Dec 20, SuperWendy rated it really liked it. I really enjoyed this story! Loved the bad girl heroine with a very dubious past. I'm also a sucker for "younger brother determined to prove themselves" heroes.

The story did begin to lose a little traction for me in the final chapters, but liked that the heroine didn't morph into a pod person to get to the happy ending.
