Anastasia and Maidstone Melody (Anastasia Series)

This merry band is serious about its rowing, but also serious about having fun, being sociable and frequenting the local coffee shop, 'The Perky Peacock', for coffee and cake after their outings — habitually on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and Weekend afternoons. With a bit of help from British Rowing staff, over the last seven weeks they have run their first "Leisure Group Learn to Row course", which has been notable for not only the fun and enthusiasm with which eight to 10 not-so-young rowers have thrown themselves into the challenge of learning a new sport, but also by the fantastic weather that accompanied every one of the sessions so far.

Wall to wall sunshine was the order of the day, which created a fantastic backdrop to the whole experience. Taking place across the country, these sorts of initiatives aim to get more and more people involved in rowing at different times of the week. This means that clubs can increase their membership and participation by getting more rowers out on the water during the day, as well as at more traditional rowing times.

These five participants were then able to assist John and Hilary in the delivery of the Learn to Row course; sitting in learner quads, coxing boats, helping the beginners get onto and off the water and ultimately working with rowers and starting to develop coaching skills of their own. The Learn to Row course was designed, ultimately, to help learners become self-sufficient on the water, and so tuition began in coxed quads and progressed to wide beamed doubles and singles.

Some of the more capable members of the group ended up in tracer singles and were pretty much ready for fine singles. This all bodes well for the continuing growth of the York City leisure group; let's hope the heatwave they have obviously created in York holds too! Have you joined the County Sports Partnership coaching network yet? The CSP network is completely free, and offers new and experienced coaches an opportunity to connect and share information with their local coaching community.

Download the questionnaire here: Please ensure that these details — including phone numbers, emails and addresses — are current using the online Club Management system: Nominations for the Volunteer and Coaching Awards close at the end of August! Collisions are an issue for all rowers; they have been too frequent and have caused painful injuries. Collisions can be avoided. The first step in Collision Avoidance is to keep a good lookout.

This enables you to know where you are going and what is in front of you. Then you have a chance to avoid dangers. This issue has been recognised by the Thames Region and the Port of London Authority PLA who have worked together to produce a set of posters that warn rowers of the potential consequences of not keeping a good lookout pictured. To download the full set of posters, visit www. Do not forget to keep a good look out on land as well as on the water, walking into riggers can be painful too.

More and more people are swimming in open water during the summer months - find out what you club can do to reduce the associated risks at your club Wild Swimming is simply swimming in open water in both organised and spontaneous events. This is becoming increasingly popular and this is the time of year when we can expect a peak in activity.

Experience at some rowing clubs shows that these events are well organised and safe. The OSS is not a small organisation; it has 16, newsletter subscribers; for comparison British Rowing has around 32, individual members. There is also useful information at www. Perhaps the spontaneous events are of more concern. These involve small groups of people, or perhaps only one person, deciding to go for a swim. The very nature of this activity is that it is adventurous and individualistic, it does not lend itself to organisation and control, or to pre-planning.

Spontaneous Wild Swimmers may not consider their own safety and the potential effects other water users can have on them. Clearly, there is a potential for boats, including rowing boats to collide with swimmers. The OSS website offers safety advice to swimmers on its website. It recommends that swimmers always wear brightly coloured swimming caps but spontaneous swimmers may not always do so.

This is not just good advice for rowers and coxes, it also applies to coaches, onshore helpers and everyone else involved. At least one rowing club has made contact with swimmers and invited them to shower at the club after their swim. This provides an opportunity to chat and come to some arrangements that benefit both activities. Please consider doing this at your club.

The women's junior racing was exciting throughout, with the eventual Match-winning nation, England, only emerging in the very last race. In the women's junior coxless fours, Aberdeen Schools and Henley battled stroke-for-stroke all the way down the course. When the Scots caught a crab with just metres to go, Henley grabbed the win — and four precious Match points — by just a quarter of a second.

England closed the gap, though, with a win by Eton Excelsior in the quadruple sculls - pushing the Match into a thrilling eights' race decider, with Scotland one point ahead of England. England's composite eight went on to claim the crucial race ahead of Ireland, with Scotland third and Wales fourth, sealing the Match for England by just one point. The Junior men's Match was a more comfortable win for England, with victories in four of the seven races — Jordon Simon and Lucas Rodd of Tideway Scullers in pairs, Northwich's quadruple scullers and composite crews in coxed fours and eights.

England's senior men's team only had one win in their Match, by lightweight double scullers Sam Tuck and James Gossage of Durham University, while Match winners Scotland had five individual race victories. In this Match, Ireland were second while England were third ahead of Wales. There was only one individual win for England in the women's senior Match, by the quadruple scullers from Wallingford, and Match winners Scotland won seven different events.

The English women finished their Match in second place, ahead of Ireland and Wales. The event was held in fair conditions with light wind, and enjoyed a light-hearted family atmosphere, with many parents and friend of all four countries creating lots of noise and encouragement. For Scotland, this was a best-ever total of sixteen individual race wins. The majority of their senior men's team was drawn from Edinburgh University, which has recently started an ambitious high-performance programme.

We now want to go on and establish a clear pathway for Scottish rowers to the GB teams". Scotland 34 points, Ireland 29, England 20, Wales Scotland 34 points, England 28, Ireland 20, Wales England 25 points, Ireland 17, Scotland 15, Wales England 24 points, Scotland 23, Ireland 13, Wales Full results are available via www.
