I am a student of Traditional Horary Astrology, and this is just the book I've been looking for! Like most students of Traditional Horary, I began with William Lilly's "Christian Astrology", which is the bible of Traditional Horary astrology, and the best place to begin. However, many areas of Horary work are not sufficiently clarified by Lilly, and this is where Dunn's work is so helpful.
Having this collection of the essential points of teachings all placed together saves the student incalculable amounts of time that would otherwise have to be spent first buying all sorts of other volumes and then shuffling between them and sorting them out! Since astrology is visual, it always boggles my mind that more authors don't use more drawings to illustrate the teachings. Dunn uses more than I've seen anyone else use, and it really helps me as a visually oriented person.
She uses a lot of small diagrams to illustrate her discussion of matters such as planets out of sect, diurnal or nocturnal placement, occidental and oriental planet positions, and prohibition, refranation and frustration. Dunn provides numerous case examples which I haven't examined in detail yet since I haven't finished her book, but what I do notice on a cursory glance, is that her analyses are all quite succinct, compared with the longer analyses I am used to reading in other books on horary by contemporary astrologers.
An example of the type of issue that WIlliam Lilly didn't explicitly address, because he lived in a different culture, was whether one could use an horary chart to ask a question that is psychological in nature. Particularly since modern astrology has become profoundly psychologically oriented, one is curious about this question. Barbara Dunn takes the view pg that the concept of a psychological horary is contradictory to the deterministic nature of horary charts, I presume and invalid All in all, this is a phenomenal book! She has no mind of her own, she does not tell what works what not or what is the proper method. She starts a topic and then she says Morin says this, Al-Biruni says that Alqabisi has this view and leaves conclusion on you. The whole book pages full of confusion ,she makes it rather an encyclopedia and she writes about all branches of astrology like natal,mundane, electional, psychological setting etc.
I have been doing horary since but and I am very accurate. I bought this book that I might learn something new or better but it started to confuse me and I started to mix up things. It was a total waste of money and I bought confusion instead of knowledge. I have almost all books on astrology old and new only this book was missing in my library.
I wrote this review so that other people are saved , if you want to buy ,buy her teacher's book Horary Astrologyv Rediscovered which is a far superior boonk! Where there are doubts arising through a poor translation, an unsympathetic translator or other factors, Ms Dunn provides clarification. Instead of seeking to change or modify the tools and techniques handed down by our ancestors, or denying that astrology is about prediction, Horary Astrology Re-examined offers confirmation that astrologers need to "come to grips with their history, complex as it is.
