The album and the song were an enormous success, the single scoring on the U. In , the album was reissued under the title The Little Drummer Boy: A Christmas Festival , capitalizing on the single's popularity. The following year the album was released in stereo.

The story depicted in the song is somewhat similar to a 12th-century legend retold by Anatole France as Le Jongleur de Notre Dame French: Our Lady's Juggler , which was adapted into an opera in by Jules Massenet. In the French legend, however, a juggler juggles before the statue of the Virgin Mary , and the statue, according to which version of the legend one reads, either smiles at him or throws him a rose or both, as in the television film, The Juggler of Notre Dame.

Shamed and encouraged by the boys' bravery, they return to the attack. Before they can be reached, the boys are killed in the first volley of Afghan fire and are slain. The rallied and enraged troops rout the enemy and help win the battle, but are shunned by the rest of the Brigade for their earlier actions. The real-life basis for the "Fore and Aft" Regiment might be a nickname of the Gloucestershire Regiment , which has a cap badge on the front and back of its headdress.

This is a battle honour earned when the regiment faced off two forces of enemy French troops at the Battle of the Nile by standing its companies back-to-back. Kipling was probably playing cute by using a real regiment's nickname to provide realism but giving it a cover name to prevent embarrassing the real regiment.

The lead section of this article may need to be rewritten.
