As you can see from the cover picture he tries balloons tied to string in order to fit in, but they don't last long thanks to some pesky birds! He tried boulders, feathers and even porcupines, but none of them worked.

Downhearted he comes across a man who tells him that he is special, and that there is nothing wrong with that. Th message throughout this story is clear and even my son was aware of it, and this story actually came to us at the right time as we are teaching him all about how being different isn't a bad thing, and that everyone is different in some shape or form. True to form we have some fun facts at the end of the book - I actually love this little feature in Julies books: Oct 14, Stephanie rated it it was amazing. She deserves kudos for that! A recurrent theme in all her books is perseverance. While Humpfree was never meant to have humps, he took it upon himself to keep trying new things even when he failed epically. This is the perfect type of book that pre-K children need to have read to them.

You know how they tell you not to judge a book by its cover? The cover, with its portrayal of a startled-looking flat-backed camel floating over the desert with balloons tied around his midsection promises a humorous tale, and that promise is fully delivered. From balloons to boulders, from feathers to sandbags, Humpfree tries out anything vaguely hump-shaped… but sadly, nothing works.

Finally, despondent over his humpless state, Humpfree sinks into despair. But never fear — as it turns out, humpless camels are a valuable breed due to their scarcity, as Humpfree discovers.
