The fact Galdir does not give up or become the same as his enemies shows his heroic qualities. I would really give this a four and a half star rating, however that isn't an option.

There were a couple things that were predictable, but still a great read. Galdir has flavors of Game of Thrones, but grounded in history. I am looking forward to reading more from Nath. I read the first Galdir novel and looked forward to seeing Galdir's adventures as a Roman auxiliary in Roman era Britain. This novel was well written to give the reader a sense of what it may have been like amongst the various tribes in old Britain, or more accurately, what is now Scotland.

There is much to keep the reader interested and near the end it becomes a real page turner. As usual, Galdir falls in love. With a dramatically beautiful woman. This one is a warrior princess or sword maiden, beautiful and independent. Perhaps the author had in mind film rights and needed a statuesque, leather clad beauty who could swing a sword like a Samurai to entice movie producers. Still, they do have an interesting relationship which adds to the story. I prefer my barbarians not to engage in endless introspection or to wallow in self pity.

There is quite a bit more of that than in the first novel in the series. What with Galdir mooning over his lost loves, having weird dreams and visions, one would think that he hadn't the time to unite the various tribal factions to overthrow the Roman yoke. After having read the first chapter of the first book in this series, I went ahead and bought the 2nd and 3rd books. I did not regret that choice one bit. I have finished reading all three books, and can honestly say I loved them all and hope to see a fourth one! This author is a fabulous story teller, and I couldn't get enough of Galdir's story.

Very few authors draw me in like Fredrik Nath has. Each of the books has very minor grammar or spelling issues in the Kindle edition, but they are very minor.

Yes, you could buy any one of these three books alone, but I don't know why you'd limit yourself so. This story-line is so addictive that reading all three is a must. I am normally pretty tough on historical fiction writers, as some of my other reviews will prove. Being a historian by profession, I am picky about historical fiction. Still, a good story. The epic story of Galdir is continued in this second book. Its a good continuation of the story with interesting characters and subplots set mostly in Roman era Britain.

Let's Eat History: The Roman Banquet (Roman Empire Documentary) - Timeline

Unfortunately the things I didn't like about the first book are magnified in this one. The long passages where Galdir is having introspective self talk and the many dream sequences made me skip through it in a few parts. Maybe thats this Author's "thing" but they serve only to provide lengthy unwelcome pauses in what is otherwise a great story. I'd prefer deeper interaction which other characters or more action sequences. I'll certainly read the next one just to see what happens.

I enjoyed reading this book. The writing was good. The plot was good. The characters were likable. They all had weaknesses as well as strong points. The only thing I did not like was the way the author depicted the Roman soldiers. My understanding was that they were excellent fighters and well trained. Not everyone in s Germany toed the Nazi line. For some, like Rolf Schmidt For some, like Rolf Schmidt, the I studied Nazi Germany at university and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a novel that portrays life in Paris under the Nazis quite so vividly.

Raoul, Head Chef of Le Metro, the top hotel His life in tatters, the nation over which he once presided now annexed by Rome, Galdir returns to the city from which he once escaped as a slave.

For in this den of thieves and scoundrels lies Galdir's only hope of persuading the Senate to rescind the Roman fetters that hold his people. When Emperor Commodus commands Galdir to be his bodyguard, he obeys - but at the cost of his Germanic nature and loyalty. Tolerating the madness that is Commodus Galdir - Protector of Rome Roman Novel: It never wavers from its narrative trajectory or its cast-iron plot A gripping, thoroughly satisfying Roman novel, genre writing at its best. A dark tale of Celtic mysticism, grief and battle.

Although Galdir regards himself as a free man, he is still enslaved by his past - and his future. Unable to throw off the yoke of prediction, embittered by the defeat of his nation which has been annexed by Rome, and forced to serve the Roman Emperor as an auxiliary commander of cavalry on Hadrian's Wall, he faces increasingly fierce attacks from hostile Celtic tribes north of the Wall. A battle for power among Frankish warlords leads to a mass exodus across the Rhine All the while, Marcus Aurelius' Roman army pushes further north, changing everything.

These seemingly unrelated events meet in a cataclysm that alters the course of history. In the background, the ageing witch Chlotsuintha predicts it all Galdir - Rebel of the North Roman Novel: Unable to throw off the yoke of prediction, embittered by the defeat of his nation which has been annexed by Rome, and forced to serve the Roman Emperor as an auxiliary commander of cavalry on Hadrian's Wall, he faces increasingly fierce attacks from hostile Celtic tribes north A Nazi Officer steals a Matisse painting which becomes a symbol of freedom against the oppressors.
