For some reason, I didn't expect it to be, but I enjoyed it very much. The Dollmaker is set mostly in New Orleans, Louisiana and in the surrounding areas. It's not often I read a book set in the South and when I do, I appreciate the vivid descriptions of all the colorful plants and trees and bayous that are not native to where I live.

Judging by the title and cover, I expected this book was going to be something supernatural invol I am very surprised right now. Judging by the title and cover, I expected this book was going to be something supernatural involving killer dolls or some such thing but it was actually more of a mystery than anything else. It kept me captivated from the very first page. I only wish that the last couple of chapters were more drawn out because I feel like the book was very well paced but the ending was kind of abrupt.

That seems to be the consensus of most people who have read this book. I did like the ending but felt that it could have been more descriptive and drawn out. It might have been nice to actually find out what The Dollmaker did with all of the girls he kidnapped etc etc. I really liked Claire's character. I felt like she was a really wholesome woman and very, very patient and kind.

Claire and Dave together made me very happy: I look forward to more books by Amanda Stevens. View all 10 comments. Jun 26, N. S rated it liked it. Some of the content was a bit disturbing, and sad, having to do with missing children, etc. I did think the ending was a little abrupt and could have been drawn out more but all in all I enjoyed the book.

Spannend en vlot lezend boek! I believe that this is her first book or at least earlier than the "Graveyard Queen" series and it certainly wasn't as good. It is a stand alone book, so there wasn't the chance for the to be developed as well as they are in the Graveyard Queen books. It also had a not so surprising ending. It does, however, give you a chance to see how the author improves with each subsequent book. Jul 28, Gina Shupp rated it really liked it. The Dollmaker kept your interest and brought one surprise after another. It was about one mothers grief for losing her child and even after seven years and two marriages still looked for her daughter.

Was surprised by the ending. Great book I don't like dolls so was surprised I bought this book but so glad I did. The book was based around Doug and Claire daughter who was kidnapped 7 years earlier. Claire sees a doll that looks exactly like her daughter.

This author could be my favorite new author!! Oct 16, Jenn Brouwer rated it liked it. This book was ok. The story line was decent. I hated the ending and i felt there were to many unnecessary characters. Almost two different story lines going on that did not really relate to each other. So 3 stars at the most. I loved this book.

Jun 09, Shelley rated it liked it Shelves: Dave was a New Orleans police detective who at the time was looking into the murder of a teen girl named Renee Savaria. Dave was also falling further and further into darkness by drinking constantly and turning moody because the case was getting to him. Both Claire and Dave blamed the other for Ruby's disappearance, especially Claire who was the last person to see her alive besides the Dollmaker that is. Later, because of Dave's inability to get his head cleared up, Claire walked out the door, and Dave ended up quitting the force and becoming a full time drunk. Seven years later, Claire is married to yet another cop, Alex Girard, but they are in the process of getting a divorce. So, when Claire notices a doll in a shop window that is the spitting image of her missing daughter Ruby, everything changes quickly for Claire.

Her life spirals out of control as she is run over by a car not paying attention to where she was at the time. Not even her sister or mother. Not even Alex who totally misses clues in the shop owners disappearance or the fact that a picture of Ruby is found in her shop. After all else fails, she ends up running to Dave who is now a Private Investigator and has other things on his plate besides helping Claire. Dave appears to be heading for a showdown with his former officers of the law in what ends up connecting Renee Savaria's death to a call Dave received on the night Ruby disappeared.

Dave believes that both cases are linked to the same killer, and possibly the disappearance of his daughter. After asking for and getting help from his former partner, the pieces of the puzzle slowly come together to the point where those involved in having Dave lose valuable evidence that could have solved Renee's murder and possibly saved Ruby's life.

I liked the overall story and the plot line, and the fact that the story takes place in and around New Orleans post-Katrina. The only problem I had with the story was the rather blunt ending to the story. There were several plotlines that could have been explored further instead of just ending. It was as thought the writer or editors were in a hurry to release the story, and didn't bother understanding that readers might want to know more. When the Dollmaker is introduced to the readers, you know immediately who he is but not why he is kidnapping and killing little girls and making dolls from their likeness.

Ok, so, we understand that it had alot to do with his upbringing and his mother's desire to allow him to be different. We also know that he tormented his father and aunt after they tried to "correct" him surgically. Maybe that one will have a better ending. Jul 18, Nathalia rated it really liked it. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing either.

And main characters are all too plain.

  • L.E. Gay (Author of The Doll Maker)?
  • Strength of Materials Von Mises Stress!
  • Confessions of A Sinner: Truelife Encounters of a Pickup Artist, Volume 1.
  • Brimstone.

I also didn't like some stuff that wasn't "closed", like all the Travis issue and what happened to him as a reader, I know, but the case was never closed for his girlfriend. Because that is not really explained but hinted. I would also like to ge It wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing either. I would also like to get an Epilogue with the Savaria case resolution -what happened to the cops-. And I would definitely like a confirmation on the identity of the "mysterious woman who visited the gallery" -even if readers can guess it- Even if I had my suspicions, for a long time I was really lost with so many names and characters that seemed to be totally unrelated and author didn't give any information about them.

More than once I had to go back to the first chapters to check on names and descriptions so I could at least try to understand if they were talking about the same person or not. NOW, the plot is amazing.

It does, however, give you a chance to see how the author improves with each subsequent book. Can she make him believe the doll really exists? Claire asks for his help in locating the missing doll. Desperate for answers, she returns to the heart of New Orleans and the only mother she has ever known.

I really liked it. The author have a certain something I can't describe, an ability to think of really interesting an unexpected villains. The book just kept surprising me with every page I read. Every theory I made was wrong until the very end. I'm really happy the story didn't get a "Disney happy ending" but a real ending instead. It would have been really stupid if, at the end, Ruby appeared from nowhere. I also like that the author doesn't give a real ending to the main "couple"'s story.

I'm not a fan of crime stories, I'm more of a paranormal books reader. But I really enjoyed the plot. I just wished the events at the beginning were faster and the resolution slower. Cos I feel like I've been getting ready for the investigation to get "intense" for over pages and then, everything suddenly ends in less than There's another thing that I admire about Amanda Stevens and is the way she includes in her books a lot of topics that are normally considered "taboo". All in all, the book was really good, just hard to get into it. It feels a bit incomplete, leaving a bitter taste that keeps me wondering about some issues that weren't solved.

It might be on porpoise, it might be the author's style. I don't know, but I just ended up having a lot of questions that got no answer. I wish I could give this book 3. Pam Sicke on May 31, The Doll Maker is nail-biting, stay-up-all-night-to-finish suspense. A great book with wonderfully drawn characters. Everyone needs a Mama Lu and Mr. John in their lives. Well written with a satisfying ending.

Looking forward to the next chapter in Nalia's story.
