SEATTLE — Microsoft has spent years adjusting its business to reflect a shift from traditional software sales to cloud computing services delivered over the internet. It is a bet that continues to pay off for the company — as was evident in its quarterly earnings released Wednesday.

Like many legacy software companies that cater to the huge corporate computing market, Microsoft was caught off guard by the emergence of cloud computing in the form of online storage and computing services offered by the internet retailer Amazon. After Satya Nadella took over as chief executive in , the company redoubled its efforts. Microsoft is now widely considered the No. Without the tax charge though, Microsoft said it earned 96 cents a share. Though Google Flights already includes delay notices, the new ability adds a prediction element so that travelers can be alerted to potential delays before the airline has announced them. Flights will also start showing the reasons why a flight is delayed. For this reason, Google says that it will only show delay predictions in cases where there is at least an percent confidence in the prediction. Google explains that its machine learning algorithms use historical flight status data to help make the predictions.

The delay shows up in a red flag directly in Google Flights next to the rest of the flight information. Predictions aside, Google Flights also now shows relevant info for customers who are flying under budget fares, including baggage fees, overhead bin space, and whether the customer can choose their own seat. That info is provided for flights with Delta, America, and United. Google Flights can predict delays and will tell you before the airlines trustedreviews. Facebook is also under fire for exploiting vulnerabilities in human psychology to hook people on social media, hijacking their time and attention and undermining their well-being. Zuckerberg, who says his personal challenge for is to fix Facebook, says his focus is not on time spent on Facebook, but time "well spent" on Facebook.

In recent months, Facebook has admitted that passive use of Facebook — aimless scrolling through the news feed — can be bad for mental health. Facebook is altering the formula that determines what shows up in people's news feeds to favor status updates from friends and family that spark more "meaningful social interactions. Going forward, Zuckerberg said Facebook would measure success by how many of those interactions are taking place on Facebook. He did not say how Facebook determines which social interactions are meaningful. Under scrutiny regarding Russia-linked posts, Twitter says it's warning users who may've interacted with the material. We'd be hesitant to call it "waving a red flag. On Wednesday, the company updated an earlier blog post and said approximately 1. In the original post Twitter said it had emailed , of its US users who during last year's presidential election retweeted or liked a post by the Internet Research Agency, a Russian government-linked group, or who followed an account associated with IRA propaganda.

That followed a mid-January statement that Russian propaganda had been more widespread than estimated. With the updated post, Twitter says it's expanded the number of people getting notifications. The company says it's sent warnings to people who -- "directly engaged during the election period with the 3, IRA-linked accounts we identified, either by retweeting, quoting, replying to, mentioning, or liking those accounts or content created by those accounts; -- "were actively following one of the identified IRA-linked accounts at the time those accounts were suspended; and -- "opt out of receiving most email updates from Twitter and would not have received our initial notice based on their email settings.

The US-based firm already has a partnership with RailTel, under which Wi-Fi Internet services are provided at over railway stations in the country. Google said these hotspots will be available at public places like gardens, hospitals and police stations, helping people get access to free Wi-Fi. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made fixing Facebook his personal challenge this year, and the company has already announced a slew of changes to this end.

Among them, showing users more "meaningful" content from friends and family and emphasizing local news.

There will be more changes coming in the next weeks and months. For now, here are the highlights of what the company has announced so far: The company said in mid-January that it will highlight posts, photos and videos people are more likely to interact with rather than passively consume. The changes come as the company faces criticism that social media can make people feel depressed and isolated. Facebook says research shows this is especially true with "passive content," such as watching videos without interacting or mindlessly scrolling through feeds.

But to decide what users find trustworthy, Facebook turned to its users, asking whether they are familiar with and trust various sources of news. Critics saw this move as short-sighted — after all, it wasn't long ago that users were falling for fake news on Facebook. LOCAL NEWS "Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities and affect our lives," Zuckerberg wrote in a recent Facebook post announcing the company's move to show users more stories from their town or city.

But the effects of this on local publishers is unclear. Facebook, along with Google, have long been criticized for siphoning away online advertising dollars from local news outlets. The latest move might be too late to reverse this trend. After announcing an overhaul to its News Feed earlier this month, one that places emphasis on people's interactions over content from brands, the company has been taking heat for its new approach.

Not only because Facebook is leaving publishers who relied on its platform behind, but it also isn't offering the best solution to fix its fake news problem. A blunt two-question "trusted" news survey simply won't cut it. CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg said that, with these changes, he expects users' time on the site to go down, but he believes keeping people happy will be better for Facebook's bottom line in the long run. And well, today during its Q4 earnings report, Facebook revealed that even though users are indeed spending less time on its site, it is making more money than ever.

In a statement about the latest results, Zuckerberg said " was a strong year for Facebook, but it was also a hard one. Still, Zuckerberg doesn't seem to be too worried about the drop in numbers, noting that by "focusing on meaningful connections, our community and business will be stronger over the long term.

Announcement

Last year, Facebook pledged to sacrifice profit for better security, as a result of growing concerns of how Russian-sponsored trolls and bots used its platform to interfere in American politics. Zuckerberg said back then that, even though Facebook's community was continuing to grow with more than 2 billion users , none of that matter if it couldn't protect them. Protecting our community is more important than maximizing our profits. Facebook is still raking it in, even as people spend less time on the service cnet.

The new number reflects those who may have also replied to or mentioned these accounts. However, Twitter also noted it may notify more people in the future. The IRA is a Russian company with Kremlin ties that has been exposed as organizing purposeful disinformation campaigns in the U. The news furthers the perception that social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook, which has acknowledged its own Russian troll army problems during the election, are not making enough of an effort to shutter disinformation campaigns that have contributed to swaying the voting public.

Further — and despite a promise of more transparency — the notification seems to have added to the confusion. But which one was it? What exactly am I supposed to do with this email? Updated on January 31, We have expanded the number of people notified about interactions with Twitter accounts potentially connected to a propaganda effort by a Russian government-linked organization known as the Internet Research Agency. Our notice efforts are focused on certain types of interactions, and they will not encompass every person that ever saw this content.

Our goal in providing these notifications is to advance public awareness of and engagement with the important issues raised in our blog post, and provide greater transparency to our account holders and the public. We have now sent notices to Twitter users with an active email address who our records indicate are based in the US and fall into at least one of the following categories: We will be sending a short survey to a small group of people who received our notification to gain feedback on this process.

Electronic Arts' shareholders are relieved after strong in-game purchasing results from its sports game titles offset disappointing "Star Wars Battlefront II" sales. The game publisher reported December quarter sales results slightly below its guidance Tuesday. EA also gave a March quarter revenue forecast above expectations.

The company revealed on its earnings call "Star Wars Battlefront II" sold roughly 7 million units during the December quarter, tracking below its guidance in July of 14 million lifetime unit sales for the title. The company's stock surged 7 percent Wednesday, a day after the report as Wall Street analysts focused in on the strength of EA's microtransaction business in its sports games. F18 guidance as fairly horrific game sales were offset by almost unbelievably strong live services revenue," Cowen analyst Doug Creutz wrote in a note to clients Wednesday.

Now, yet another unannounced Sony Xperia smartphone has passed FCC certification, and is expected to be the same device that was spotted on the benchmarking website earlier. The device appears to sport an aspect ratio of If this is true, the Xperia XZ2 Compact will be among the rare flagship smartphones to feature a small 5-inch nearly bezel-less display.

The device will come with 64GB of expandable storage. The camera department will allegedly include a 19MP dual camera setup at the rear and an 8MP selfie shooter. A 3,mAh battery with fast charging battery is expected to power the phone. It is also expected to boot Android 8. If the information above is true, we are looking at a flagship Sony Xperia offering with a compact display.

The company has scheduled an event for February 26th, where it is expected to launch the Xperia XZ Pro as well. The device is expected to come with a 5. The company must scramble to find celebrities to replace her as the voice of the Amazon Echo, and hilarity ensues. Jeff Bezos himself acts convincingly perplexed after hearing the news. It was one of the best ads we saw. The company said it was able to remove some , fraudulent or malicious apps, both before and after they reached actual consumers. That sounds great until you realize that some , apps with malicious intentions were submitted to the Google Play store in alone. Removing more than , apps that violated the Google Play store policies is impressive. Currently, there are some 3. Google said it discovered some , apps that were just copycats, looking to deceive users into installing fraudulent applications. Tens of thousands of apps featured inappropriate content, including pornography, extreme violence, hate, and illegal activities.

An unspecified number of malware apps were also discovered and killed. These apps would commit SMS fraud, act as trojans, and attempt to phish user data. One other disturbing detail presented in the blog post is that Google was able to take down some , bad developers last year alone: At least , developers out there would rather resort to creating some sort of malicious app to take advantage of Android users rather than come up with application ideas that would generate revenue.

But Google is also responsible for this wave of Android crime if you will. I will also add that Apple never shares similar reports. We have no idea how many apps Apple turned down this year, and how many malicious apps made it into the App Store. Google removed 7 lakh malicious apps from Play Store in ibtimes. The Samsung Galaxy S9 launch is February 25 and will be the biggest of so far, with the eyes of the world firmly placed on the South Korean firm as it introduces its retort to Apple's iPhone X, which arrived towards the end of The invites for the event have gone out, and we know we'll be seeing the S9 at Samsung's official launch event at MWC at the end of February.

There's no question that this is when we'll see the refined sequel to last year's Samsung Galaxy S8, with the invite clearly teasing the number nine, and we already have a good idea of what this Android smartphone looks like. The thing is, the S9 isn't looking like a phone to redefine the space. All the rumors, leaks and speculation to date point towards an iterative update. For those hoping for a game-changing device in the Galaxy portfolio, you may have to wait until It won't just be the S9 though, with rumors heavily hinting at the larger Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus set to arrive alongside - following the trend of launching dual flagships phones that the firm started back in with the Galaxy S6.

What the Samsung Galaxy S9 could look like right Credit: Evan Blass Ahead of the newly-revealed Galaxy S9 launch date on February 25, a leaked video has seemingly shown the Samsung Galaxy S9 in the flesh, and dual cameras on the front will enable fancy new features. Given we're not expecting massive design changes, we doubt too high a price rise. It's unclear when it'll arrive to its first customers, but pre-orders are likely to start on March 1 and the phone may ship in mid-March.

We know that, because Samsung has sent us an invite to its Unpacked event on that date, teasing the number nine in the process. The pre-order date is rumored to be March 1, while the Samsung Galaxy S9 release date is tipped to be mid-March according to our sources close to the S9. The Galaxy S9 price will, at the very least, mirror that launch price of the S8, but there's always a chance it could cost even more. The Bell reports unnamed industry sources saying that Samsung has been hard at work on the display panels for the Galaxy S9 since late March As for the form the screen will take, it's rumored and likely to retain the Galaxy S8's There's also a good chance the display will be the same size as the Galaxy S8, coming in at 5.

An image seemingly showing the Galaxy S9's retail box has also leaked, listing a 5. Rumors of an in-screen fingerprint scanner abound, like the new Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensor can sit below quite thick displays, but we don't anticipate this coming to the S9. That's backed up by one tipster who claims an in-screen scanner isn't in the cards, as does another recent report, so don't count on that feature just yet.

Aside from that, in late Samsung licensed a new glass coating technology that makes water bounce off your smartphone screen. Samsung plans to include this tech in an upcoming phone, so it may mean the Galaxy S9 is much easier to use in the rain. Most recently we've seen a short video, seemingly showing the Samsung Galaxy S9 from the front and back, albeit with the screen off. It matches up with an earlier render video and rendered images supposedly showing the Samsung Galaxy S9, which show a device that looks very similar to the Samsung Galaxy S8, albeit with the fingerprint scanner moved beneath the camera lens but not in-screen as some rumors have suggested.

We've also seen another leak that suggests the phone will keep its 3. In fact, a leaked image complete with dimensions backs that up, as it suggests that the Galaxy S9 will be marginally shorter than the S8, but will otherwise look similar, albeit with the scanner moved beneath the camera lens, just like in the images above. This could be what the Samsung Galaxy S9 will look like. Weibo One eagle-eyed TechRadar reader noticed the image below on Samsung's own website that seems to show the rear of the Galaxy S9 without a fingerprint scanner next to the camera.

We've taken a look at the website and considering there are so many conceptual images of future Samsung phones on the page detailing the Exynos , we don't believe this is an accurate depiction of the Galaxy S9. Elsewhere, Samsung has trademarked a new material called ' Metal 12 ' which is light and strong, so there's a chance this could be used in the S9, but it probably needs more development, so we doubt it.

We've also heard that the Galaxy S9 could have a modular design, with magnets on the back letting you attach hardware accessories which could take the form of battery packs, zoom lenses or any number of other things , a bit like Motorola's Moto Mods. Only one source has mentioned this possibility so far, so we'd take it with a huge pinch of salt as we've not seen it in any renders or pictures so dar. And a minor design tweak could come in the form of a new color for the Galaxy S9, with the phone supposedly landing in purple.

Recently, we've seen yet another leak of renders claiming to show the phone, which seem believable given what we've heard this far. The Galaxy S9 camera is going to be a key feature of Samsung's phone this year, and not because of a dual-lens camera or higher megapixels. Instead, we're expecting to see a variable aperture, super slow motion video and the possibility of the world's first phone with HDR video capture.

This rumor comes from a leaked image of the Galaxy S9's box, which also lists it as being 'super speed', having an 8MP front-facing camera and supporting 'super slow-mo'. This could be the retail box for the Samsung Galaxy S9. Reddit That last point is something we've heard rumored before, as industry sources claim Samsung is working on a rear camera that can shoot at 1, frames per second, which would be better than anything on the market in a phone right now.

We've also heard more generally that the Galaxy S9 will have an upgraded camera system. Phone screens can display HDR video, but capturing it on a phone is currently impossible. Qualcomm's new Snapdragon mobile chipset, however, is supposed to change all of that, and we expect this chip to be inside the Galaxy S9 in the US.

One thing we're pretty sure of: The sketch above echoes that sentiment, as do some case renders. This cut-out could either house a dual-lens camera or a single-lens and scanner. Galaxy S9 will use 3D sensor front camera October 12, They don't explain what they mean by that, but it sounds a lot like the iPhone X 's Face ID system which allows you to use facial recognition to unlock the phone.

And the 3D part suggests that like Apple's solution it won't be fooled by a picture. More rumors have been found in the Note 8 Oreo source material on this - whether this will be for the S9 or just the S9 Plus only. We wouldn't count on this feature as the information has been limited, but we wouldn't rule it out either.

The latest battery rumor comes from a certificate supposedly originating from Brazil's telecom regulator Anatel, which shows the Galaxy S9's battery as being 3,mAh - the same size as the Galaxy S8's. That's disappointing news, especially since and earlier report suggests Samsung will now use substrate-like PCB tech that will allow the Exynos chipset manufacturer to include a bigger battery without increasing the size of the processor.

However, whatever the size, efficiency improvements in the new chipsets should help the battery last longer. Wireless charging is all but a given too, since the Galaxy S8 already sports it, and a photo supposedly showing the retail box above lists wireless charging.

It's an octa-core chip with four cores running at 2. AI processing and graphics performance have also been improved, while power use has been reduced. The chipset also allows cameras to record 4K Ultra HD video at 60fps. Outside of the US, buyers are likely to get Samsung's own Exynos It includes an LTE modem which supports theoretical download speeds of 1.

However, it seems unlikely that we'll get 6GB of RAM inside, which is what many smartphone brands especially Asian ones are doing - with Samsung apparently set to stick with the much-more-sensible 4GB spec instead. That's a claim that's been echoed by a recent benchmark for the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, but the benchmark is questionable While it lists the Exynos chipset, which is likely to be used, along with Android Oreo, the actual scores achieved by the phone in the benchmark are far lower than we'd expect from a Samsung flagship, so the listing could be fake.

And that 4GB claim has also appeared on a leaked box photo, above. Samsung will likely improve the iris scanner ifor the Galaxy S9, with the latest rumors suggesting it will be boosted to 3MP from 2MP on the S8 and better able to recognize your eyes, even if you wear glasses or the lighting is poor. It will also apparently be faster than on the S8.

Both of those things have now also been listed on an image seemingly showing the phone's box. The Galaxy S9 has also now passed through the FCC Federal Communications Commission and in the process we've learned that it will support all major LTE bands and that it will be manufactured in Vietnam - that latter point is interesting because the leaked box image pictured above was first shared in Vietnam, so this further suggests it might be accurate.

We've also seen a Samsung patent for a sensor which would analyze atmospheric conditions and alert you to how much pollution there was in the air. Plus, one source has also claimed the Dex docking station we saw debut alongside the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus will get an update that will make it work more like a charging pad and allow you to type on the screen too.

It means you won't need to use a keyboard and mouse when connecting your phone up to a monitor. Release date, prices, features, and specs digitaltrends. The expansion adds several new perks to the existing GoPro Plus membership. Similar to the GoPro Care program, replacing a device will add a one-time charge on top of subscription fees. The replacement fee varies by model, but GoPro says the cost is about 20 percent of the list price of the camera.

Subscribers can replace up to two Hero6 Black, Hero5, or Fusion cameras in one year. Plus subscription already included automatic cloud backups, preventing data loss by allowing the GoPro to back up files whenever connected to the GoPro App. Automatic backups are possible from both Hero6 and Hero5 cameras thanks to built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, while Hero4 and older cameras must be backed up through a desktop computer.

Plus also serves as a cloud-based storage solution, with the subscription update now including unlimited photo storage and 35 hours of video storage. As an additional perk, Plus offers access to a soundtrack library for adding music to your videos. While the changes are launching today, mobile backups will have to wait for an app update to enable the feature, which is expected next month for iOS and in later in the spring for Android. The new focus on subscription services reflects how GoPro is currently restructuring its business. A successful subscription offering could help stabilize the company with a predictable source of income in addition to sales of cameras and accessories.

At the same time, GoPro Plus could be helpful for the accident-prone action cam users. Here are some expectations from the sector, ahead of this year's Union Budget: Acer "India as a country imports a large number of electronic goods from neighboring countries. There should be a focus to substitute imports with domestic manufacturing. This can again be achieved with attractive tax slabs. We have some success in that field but the value addition is still low. There is a need to provide an edge to domestic manufacturing. Similarly, there are a lot of low-end items being imported, and if produced locally they present a good opportunity to indigenous companies by providing local employment.

We hope this budget would be sympathetic towards the sector so as to resurrect the affected businesses again. Overall, we are hopeful for the new budget to create a conducive environment for new job creation, exports and future economic growth of the country," said CFO, Acer, Alok Dubey. As we have always stated, DataWind aims to fill the gap between conventional and smart education by providing affordable devices and internet connectivity.

Due to tax rebates in certain Indian states, as part of Make-in-India, the five percent was waived. In the last financial year, we have seen a steep rise due to GST from zero percent to 18 percent. The GST rate for 7" tablets is also at disparity with 6" smartphones, which have a 12 percent, while both sets of products carry the same functionality. This made educational tablets costlier and unaffordable among low-income groups.

We look forward to reduction in GST on low-cost educational tablets from 18 percent to five percent and if possible remove it completely. Verizon Enterprise Solutions "The Government of India has made great strides to foster the growth and development of the Indian IT and telecommunication sector, strengthening the economic and digital transformation in the country. As the industry grapples with competition caused by digital disruption, we hope that the Union Budget will take into consideration key issues such as reforms in the telecom regulatory framework via industry consultation as part of new National Telecom Policy - deliberations to promote legal certainty, predictability and global consistency which will further foster innovation and investments in the IT and telecom sector.

Kaspersky Lab "Looking at the current situation and the government initiatives like digitization in India, it is expected that the budget which is soon to be announced will focus a lot more on creating funds to battle the growing concern of cyber security in India. Teradata India "Budget assumes significance as it comes post two historical reforms made by the government, demonization and the implementation of GST. It is great to finally see digitization assume its rightful importance and all-pervasive relevance for more effective governance in our robust economy.
