That Recoil of Nature

These universal sources of disgust led Curtis to hypothesise that disgust might be genetic; hard-wired in our brains and imprinted on our biological code by millions of years of natural selection.

Playtest: Prince Recoil

But what persistent force in our past drove us to evolve such a powerful emotion? The things people consistently find disgusting also make us ill.

This link convinced Curtis that disgust was a biological mechanism for avoiding infectious disease. Faeces, pus and corpses are all sources of dangerous bacteria and viruses; faeces alone being the source of more than 20 dangerous bugs. The genes for disgust probably arose by accident and then became common through natural selection. The observation that most animals avoid eating each other's faeces suggests that disgust could have evolved a very long time ago.

Curtis still believes that upbringing plays an important role in determining what we find disgusting. But she believes that we have evolved genes that predispose us to find some things more disgusting than others. If you showed the rat and the orange to that child for the first time, they would probably be fascinated not disgusted," says Curtis.

Crucial to this instinctive reaction are visual rules of thumb, which we use to decide what is and isn't a disease threat. Visual cues are so powerful, we often squirm at the sight of things we know are harmless, simply because they happen to look like a disease threat. Take worms for example.

While many species of worm are harmless - like the humble earthworm - some have evolved to become human gut parasites. Over millions of years, we have evolved an instinctive avoidance of gut parasites in animal meat. And this same visual aversion to long, slimy, wriggly animals makes us squirm at the harmless earthworm.

The photograph on the left is of an elderly Israeli man who is thought to have been infected when he sat down under a tree to sleep. A sarcophagid or 'flesh' fly crawled inside his mouth and deposited its live larvae in the gaps between his gums and teeth. Another vital trigger is our sense of smell. I never find myself being tentative.

This is a confidence string.

It has great control from the baseline, especially on big swings. Tons of pop on volleys and limitless kick on serves. Even touch drop shots are easy to execute. For a durability string, I am amazed at how arm friendly and comfortable this is. Depth and trajectory are very easy to control. The control, comfort, power, and durability are obvious from the first hit. There is some very slight notching after 10 hours. This is a very consistent and solid feeling string. This string is a good compromise between playability and durability.

Tension maintenance is excellent and there is no string movement. Tension maintenance is outstanding and string movement is non-existent. The combination of power, comfort, and control makes this an extremely easy string to play with. I would have no problem recommending it to hard-hitting juniors and slow-swinging seniors.

Like natural gut, it seems to do everything well. Players looking to add heavier spin to their game are advised to try this.

The control is excellent. Even soft, short angles are easy to measure. It seems to defy classification. It plays like a very friendly polyester. The control is great. Volleys have a wonderfully crisp feel.

It has a comfortable and somewhat muted response. Power is there when needed, and there is enough feel for touch shots. One 95 68 Holes strung at 62 pounds CP Polyester The bite is exceptional.

Touch artists and finesse players are advised to lower the tension. Great for big hitters looking for control. This string continues to play well after several hours of hard hitting. The low power level allows for big swings and aggressive tennis. It does not last as long as my typical poly, but it is very comfortable.

On the court, it has good control and pop. There is almost no string movement. There is some extra zip on serves, perhaps because the great control allows me to swing-out more. Very comfortable for a string that shows so little wear after 20 hours. It seems to do everything well. The depth control is noticeable from the beginning.

Minimal string movement and great tension maintenance. This string plays like a fancy multifilament poly. Given the comfort level, I am surprised by the durability. This would be a great cross for heavy topspin players who tend to saw through their mains. This is a very interesting string. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Refresh and try again.
